  1. I am in the process of adding lots of electrics to my bike. I had Honda tap into a switched fuse a year or so ago and run the line up to the cowl, where I fashioned a gang line hookup to all my then current add on's (autocomm, sirius, radar detector and cell phone). Mind you, the gang was protected by a 10A in line fuse and each line coming off it was fused.

I initially had problems of blowing the sirius receiver if the engine was killed and the key was not switched off prior to restart. It would cut back on if I reinitiated the procedure properly after that, but sometimes it would blow the secondary fuse.

I am now rewiring everything possible to be under my seat. Some of my current projects direct me to link the power directly to the positive terminal on the battery. I am hesitant to do that, I may run a fused link off it to supply those components.

My radar detector has a very handy feature.... a VOLTMETER! It is accurate and the results are predictable. Voltage varies by load & engine speed. I would use this to determine whether or not to fabricate a CUNT box.

Whether or not you will have the juice to do everything you want, well, that issue has been beat to death. Honda is very reticent about much more power consumption, but I believe the issue had been resolved by 1999. (By then Honda had put a male engineer in charge of the design)

  2. Dude, you just saved me so much time and brainpower. My set is sitting on my naked bird in the cold garage right now getting ready for an install. I can only add one piece of advice for anyone considering this:

If you plan on installing a pro oiler, you might as well tap into the speedo sensor, since the pro oiler requires a signal from it. The pro oiler is my current project, and I am about to yank the wiring for the sensor. Now I know to put a splitter at the splice.

I was planning on putting the servo under the tank right over the tranny, but you make it seem like wiring will be easier if it is placed under seat.

    Thank You!!

    :allhail:

  3. Just finished replacing plugs. 16K miles. #4 plug is a little oily. I am sure I can get plenty of creative, funny and totally bullshit opinions, and I welcome them. But really, OK, is that a problem?

By the way, first R&R was doing IAW shop manual. This time I went the tank/air filter route. FUCK it was hard either way!!!

  4. I tried to install the NEP on my bird, IAW instructions found on another site. I could not get it to work correctly. My fault, I am sure....I got the TM and it works like a charm, but it is still only a static throttle positioner. I have my bird torn down now to install the Audivox cruise control, and I am very excited about this. If it works, I will have a set of TM's for sale.

  5. I am finally about to hit 16K on my 99 bird. I am waffling about the service due. The only thing I am not ready to do on my own are valve adjustments. I have a gut feeling it is vastly more complicated than my old air cooled bikes. How many miles before I really need to adjust?

Everything else will be attended by me. I would like to take it apart for about a week to upgrade my electrics, put in a headlight modulator, and my new pro-oiler. It would be pretty senseless to not do the rest of the service.

  6. I hardwired a bell passport. I went ahead and had my dealership install a fused power source to the ignition so I could power several toys. I had it wired into a junction box under the cowl. The main problem I have run into is each appliance I have has its own "cigarette lighter" plug, and I have to solder these to the junction box. The plugs are starting to take up a lot of real estate in there.

As for the cordless, I considered them, but I read in several places that the "cycling" they exhibit will not necessarily intercept POP radar. My detector has saved me hundreds and hundreds.

  7. Just what I was about to ask! Dealer told me today that he has heard of hotter bulbs melting plastic...has this happened to anyone to your knowledge? I just got a modulator and would love to bump up the wattage while doing it. What is the "better" bulb type for the bird?

  8. You local Autocomm dealer should have filters. They plug in between unit and device. LOOK OUT though, the fuckers cost about $50 each. I heard before I bought the system that they were not a "complete" unit like the JLM unit.

  9. I have an autocomm active pro. I have a radar detector, Sirius satellite, and Kyocera phone/mp3 player hook up. I ride solo, so passenger mode is not active. Works well. Just be sure to by filters for phone and radio....engine electronoics will bleed through. Sound is good except at higher speeds, when noise cancelling mode os overwhelmed by air.

  10. I was playing around with my Beltronics detector today and saw the voltage option on it, and wondered why the hell I would want to switch it "on"......now I know!

  11. Thanks, guys, now I have a real response for him other than "the engineers designed it for this tire"

PLUS my supplier (Dave at Gear Up Motorsports in Knoxville) damn near said he wouldn't install it for me for the same reason.

My son ran with the wheelie & stoppie crowd, maybe that worked for those guys.

  12. Hey, guys I am about to buy a new rear tire, loved my Metzler, got high mileage, blah blah. My son (who is WAY smarter than me) says to get a 190, but gives no reason other than it is bigger. I dunno, I don't really care, but I will ask, is a 190 more worthy on a '99 bird?

  13. I have a sirius setup through my Autocomm. The autocomm lets you add an almost infinite number of electronics into it with the addition of splitters (about $50 each).

What I have so far is a beltronics detection unit, a sony fm/am tuner ($30, keep it cheep, they will disintegrate over time) and the sirius tuner (just installed, so I cannot vouch for the stability yet)

The sirius receiver allows for FM modulation so I will probably end up running it through the little sony, although I am doubtful it will work because of all the electronic interference on the bike. My goal is to integrate my phone into the system. The autocomm has a separate input for it. A REAL problem...my phone is a Kyocera 7135 "smartphone" that has a built in MP3 player, which is pretty cool, but the plug is a 4 connector setup and it has been a bitch trying to figure out an adapter that allows full functionality.
