How many clinical-trial studies in medical journals are fake or fatally flawed? In October 2020, John Carlisle reported a startling estimate1.

Carlisle, an anaesthetist who works for England’s National Health Service, is renowned for his ability to spot dodgy data in medical trials. He is also an editor at the journal Anaesthesia, and in 2017, he decided to scour all the manuscripts he handled that reported a randomized controlled trial (RCT) — the gold standard of medical research. Over three years, he scrutinized more than 500 studies1.

For more than 150 trials, Carlisle got access to anonymized individual participant data (IPD). By studying the IPD spreadsheets, he judged that 44% of these trials contained at least some flawed data: impossible statistics, incorrect calculations or duplicated numbers or figures, for instance. And 26% of the papers had problems that were so widespread that the trial was impossible to trust, he judged — either because the authors were incompetent, or because they had faked the data.

Carlisle called these ‘zombie’ trials because they had the semblance of real research, but closer scrutiny showed they were actually hollow shells, masquerading as reliable information. Even he was surprised by their prevalence. “I anticipated maybe one in ten,” he says.

Go figure. makes sense if you think of studies like other manufactured items. What is the recall rate on the average automobile? Or how many times have you gotten an item that doesn't work? Probably not 44%, but there are lots and lots and lots of parts to studies produced by lots and lots of people of drastically varying competencies. Do you think every medical research facility or faculty has some super power to employ only the best and brightest? A study is only as good as the weakest link in the weakest citation in the study, which is be based on data from even more obscure citations. If you go down the citation research rabbit hole (I have done it just a few times in my life) you can do exactly what this guy did. It is daunting work, but pretty damned satisfying when you find the "AHA" buried in a second-or-third tier footnote.

And of course we have repeated examples of top-tier researchers caught actively falsifying data and finally getting busted.

Last night I had a chat with one of my best friends and neighbor.  His sister just had a come to Jesus moment in the hospital, all 100% because of diet.  He had made a radical diet change years ago which resolved his joint issues, but with his sister living with them now, her garbage sneaked back into his diet.  And he felt it.  So she has dropped 40 pounds reportedly, and stopped smoking.  But, she refuses to really fully commit, and won't even TRY their new air fryer.  No, things still need to be fried in grease.  WTF.

Anyway, I wonder if people saw real live data like this, they'd realize what they are doing?  Or just stay in denial?

It has been my experience when counseling patients regarding diet that once they understand, as well as I can explain it at their level (Appalachia) they realize that eating bacon has consequences beyond the mitigation of their cholesterol or antihypertensive pill. They unconsciously (I am guessing) believe the pill will allow them to eat bacon longer.

It is sort of like this: someone could witness to you or me until they are blue in the face, but it just would not stick. And no matter how much you rage against christianity you are not going to flip a single one.

We are imperfect beings and there is a great deal of comfort to me knowing this. I could not live with myself if I was always striving for perfection in every aspect of my life. Most people could not. Bacon and good liquor are powerfully comforting.

So bottom line, you characterize it as denial, but I think it is a far more subtle part of human nature.

edited: I no longer counsel since I got out of retail last year. Fond memories.

  3. Lots of "may" (>5), "likely" (1), "mostly" (3), "looks like" "suggests" and "may not" in that video.

No mention of "demonstrably', "conclusive", "substantiate", etc.

But as a whole, this was a no duh presentation. I mean, who hasn't heard their whole life that plant-based diets are generally healthier? We all make our dietary decisions based on a mix of personal preferences, medical condition constraints, religious variables, economic and geographic considerations. And of course, brainwashing by capitalist advertising pressures.

Reminds me a lot of a TV preacher, preaching to his congregation, who already know it is a sin to butt-fuck your neighbor's kids.

Also reminds me a lot of the junk medical articles in MedScape.

Also reminds me of some of Zero's videos.

The guy needs to make a living, just like all of us, and he has to be given credit for putting some work into it.

"has written that, while it is well-accepted that it is more healthy to eat a plant-based diet than a typical Western diet, Greger often overstates the known benefits of such a diet as well as the harm caused by eating animal products (for example, in a talk, he claimed that a single meal rich in animal products can "cripple" one's arteries), and he sometimes does not discuss evidence that contradicts his strong claims.[29]

Joe Schwarcz of McGill University has commented that although Greger takes his information from respected science journals and produces impressive videos, he has a vegan agenda and is known for cherry picking of data.[30]"

  4. My Klim gear has D30. Not D30 Aero like in the video. That stuff goes into their latest iteration of high-end gear like badlands pro aero.

Like Zero, I hope to never use it. I did find myself taking some of it out some when it was really. fucking. hot.

  6. real bikers……

TAOS, New Mexico, May 28 (Reuters) - A biker was charged with murder after a shootout between rival motorbike gangs at a motorcycle rally in Red River, northern New Mexico, on Saturday in which three gang members were killed and five wounded, police said.

Members of the Bandidos and Waterdogs groups traded gunfire around 5:00 p.m. (2100 GMT) on the packed main street of the mountain resort town 75 miles northeast of state capital Santa Fe, State Police Chief Tim Johnson said on Sunday.

"It was just gangbanger on gangbanger," Johnson told a press conference in Red River, adding that no bystanders were injured.

Of the three killed, two were Bandidos and one was a Waterdog, the police chief said.

Jacob Castillo, 30, a Waterdog from New Mexico was charged with murder, while Matthew Jackson, 39, of Texas, a Bandidos chapter leader, faced a count of unlawful carrying of a firearm and Bandido Christopher Garcia, 41, of Texas, was arrested on suspicion of cocaine possession.

  7. You could shop around at some body shops. Go in person, do not call. If any of them have some cute front office personnel with great personality and nice tits, hit on her. You would make a GREAT CATCH for some woman, and she would enrich your life and extend your lifespan.

That sorta explains not knowing that Macs don't run iOS.  But the Mx Macs can run iOS apps without running iOS.

OK, I mean the copying and pasting and stuff like that.

I was pretty fried by that point yesterday. Among other things I had just completed a continuing education course titled “The Matter of Anti/Matter.” There was just no more room.

  9. I was at the micro tech factory store yesterday. Bought an ultra rich fir a co-worker. The blades they have there are pretty impressive. The young woman was really trying to steer me towards a collection of military-program (I forget the term) collection and gave me her card and told me twice to call her with any questions.

Some of the knives there are massive. Even the OTF's were for beings larger than myself. Made for gutting, not cutting.

Just throwing this out there in case someone has some thoughts on chasing down this problem.  My son has a low mileage 1500 Wing that he rides daily, like a car, just loves to ride.  The other day it started tapping, like a lifter tap but ran perfect.  He pulled the valve cover and he was getting little to no oil to the top of the head.  He changed oil and filter and added SeaFoam, no change.  He installed a oil pressure gauge and it has full pressure per manual.  To me, there almost has to be a clogged oil passage to the head, maybe a piece of gasket.  I suggested trying to blow air backwards through the head passages the best he can.  Any thoughts or ideas how to find the problem without a full tear down?

If he has access to a mityvac (probable), use it to see if any of the passages are clogged, maybe before he blows shit back into general circulation. Who knows, it might even suck the purported item out.

I’m going to shoot an email to the doctor who looked over my sleep study and see what my insurance company has for local clinics.

Or you could contact your insurance company directly. They have trained staff who want to help you and would LOVE to hear from you. It is their job.

Try getting an Rx for Nasonex, it takes a few days to work. My pre cpap O2 levels were in the mid 60's the doctor was amazed I hadn't had a heart attack. When I went in for my first sleep test the tech said "go here get this machine, today, before you go home" Because of this my whole study was ass backwards, as I'd bought the machine before getting the Rx for it which came 2 days later as they rushed my second study "titration?"

CPAP has been life changing for me ,I'm pretty sure I've got some brain damage from my O2 sats being so low, or maybe I'm just an idiot?

    Maybe.....

But seriously, Mike, you hear the testimonials. I truly is a life-changing device.

UT has a great sleep center. My pulmonologist was Dr

Miisczxeliiaianski or something. Pretty ladies worked there.

  13. Yeah, you need to demand a real study. This is going to be a piece of equipment your are going to have to bond with, much like your leather dildo. You will no longer be able to go to sleep without it (psychological  dependence, a real thing). It will be perched next to you at night, injecting air and water vapor straight into your nares, with only a thin layer of tissue protecting your brain. You will have to clean it, replace parts regularly, etc. You will have to figure out how to lug it around on your trips (I bought a portable one).

They will give you a mild sedative to reduce your anxiety and help you sleep. The data gleaned at this session will guide your therapy for the rest of your life. Make sure your doc is a pulmonologist. The pulmonologist can prescribe you a newer generation antihistamine with less incidence of rebound. With the heated air going in your nose congestion shouldn't be a problem.
