Hardest bit was cleaning off the old gasket.
Isn't that what was said two pages ago? 😀 So what did you end up putting in it?

All this info is for YOU right? Would it be the same results for everyone? I have noticed through life that people seem to vary how their body responds to different things.

Well there is always Soylent Green.

I wonder about the difference between mounting indoors as apposed to outdoor as far as signal strength?

Just sharing. It would never have crossed my mind to even look at doing this, until I saw their warning not to do this when I was about to just order their pack.
I guess it's like when I got that prescription drug that would be $1040, and searching for prices, I saw the manufacturer warning people about clones from compounding pharmacies and China. Wait...I have options!
I didn't ask in a negative way but I would be temped to write them a note calling out their BS about not changing the batteries yourself.

My Explorer also uses 75w140 in the rear but 75w-90 in the front. Zero either look in the manual that came with the truck or call or stop in any Ford dealer and ask for parts dept. and ask them. They will tell you the correct answer and the amount you will need.

Take it or leave it
More information is always good. Some times things just work. Thanks for sharing your find.

I use RightStuff Black, but pretty much any automotive sealant will work.
I don't see RightStuff a lot on the shelves in my area but PERMATEX® ULTRA BLACK® RTV SILICONE GASKET MAKER is which I use all the time just in case he can't find your stuff.

Like Super said earlier, put both tires in the air, spin forward. Do both tires spin forward or does one spin backwards?

I may be dating myself, but some systems do go without maintenance under NORMAL use. You don’t replace steering fluid or change the lube in CV joints just because of age or mileage. I normally expect that items needing maintenance have indicators like drain/fill ports or grease fittings. Otherwise, you don’t fuck with it.
I just replaced the power steering fluid in one of my vehicles a couple of months ago. Most but not all automatic transmissions haven't had a drain plug on them through the years and yet many manufacturers stated that the fluid needed changed.

Double sigh.

The general rule I’ve been told is to not open things up unless absolutely necessary. So, no drain hole tells me to not fuck with it.
Do you really believe that gears meshing together for 25 years, 216,000 miles wouldn't benefit from a fluid change? Why even ask about it if you wasn't going to do it to begin with?

$21,100 final.
I sure hope it isn't rusty underneath because $21 K for a 6 cylinder car seems a little steep to me but I guess every day finds like this are getting rarer.

You would get more looks at stuff like this in the garage section but yes, I would replace the fluid. It really isn't very hard to do. Just remove the rear end cover, clean the gasket area, either put new gasket on or use gasket maker and replace cover. Put a piece of 3/8" rubber hose on the bottle of the lube and fill until it starts to run out of the hole. Your owners manual should tell you what lube to use.

There's special tools you can use to remove/install them, I obviously didn't have that
Do you know how the tool works? Thanks for the tip.

Any roofing guy who wanted to pick up a few bucks on a weekend could handle the swap with ease.

Gah! Mom still isn't happy. I'm telling her to just hire someone to come out and fix the issue. Maybe we need a new antenna. Maybe the tree growth has gotten to the point where the antenna needs to be even higher or relocated on the property. I'm not doing it.
Great idea!

Lightning strike?

I would call the dealer and speak to the service manager. Ask if this is a common thing and is there something you could do or possibly talk to a mechanic. They might just say to bring it in or maybe give you helpful info.

The mounts were otherwise okay.
Are you sure the spring hangers were not changed? They are black in your photo with everything else being brown.
Recommend me a signal booster for DTV.

Good job. It was a good idea you had to get a new antenna.
