    Brake pads

Hello boys! I haven't been around lately (been worried about my job...quite the thing to keep you occupied) but I have a question for all you road eaters: What are the best pads in your opinion? I do mostly travelling with a little aggressive riding when I get there. I went to The Dragon and the Blue Ridge Parkway twice last year and plan to do it again this year. I don't think I need a full race pad, but I want some increased performance. The ones I have have lasted me 17K miles so longevity is important as well. Oh, and while I have your attention, how much total brake fluid does the '99 bird hold? I am about to change both brake and clutch fluid but I can't find the capacities in the shop manual. Will one of the I guess quart size bottles be enough for all? I appreciate any help y'all can give me and as always, Ride Well.
  2. Hey man, just because I don't have snow tires on the 'Bird doesn't mean it ain't cold!! Actually I made the chicken run to Mobile in February and I didn't like the way I fealt at the end. I was wearing several layers of clothes and by the time I got to Mobile I was slurring and couldn't get warm. One of the guys I met up with (Sorry Francis, I can't remember his name) said something that I liked: Its a whole lot easier to STAY warm than to GET warm. So there. I am also thinking of just foregoing the vest, leaving the rainsuit at home and getting the Tourmaster Courtech CX jacket and pants. Anybody have any rain experience with this stuff?
  3. Thanks a lot for the input guys! Warchild, you seem to be the electrical maniac..I mean guru here, is there a specific type/rating of reostat I should look into? does the Widder company make one for their gear?
  4. I am thinking of taking a little road trip (back to Tennessee, actually) in October and I was wondering if, in all of your infinite high mileage wisdom, someone could give me some insight on electric vests. I am curious as to whether there is any one brand that is better than another, what an average price should be, if my electrical system can handle it etc. Whatever info ya'll can pass on would be appreciated. Thanks a lot! Ken 'URLOOZN' General Pee-On
  5. You hit that one right on the nose. This guy was an acceleration fiend!
  6. D'oh!! I was hoping I wouldn't have to be the guinnea pig here, but I guess I may have to bite the bullet and go for it. That same guy also had the PM forged wheels on his bike. They looked killer and were a lot lighter, but he said that they have no cush drive. Consequently he eats clutches about every 6-8K miles and chain and sprockets about every 8-10K!
  7. Hello all! I was on the Blue Ridge Parkway while at the 'Hoot and I met this guy from PA. He had a '98 'bird that was sweet and we talked about mods for a while. He had nothing bad to say about the Yoshimura Stage I cams on his bike. He said that it makes the engine 'wake up' at about 7K like a 600 like it is supposed to. My question isthis: Has anyone tried these with the FI bikes? If I get them will I need to get a PCII and maybe a set of slip ons (I have stock cans now)? I am also running a stock air filter but a K&N is on the way. Any advice or input from the 'Go-Fast Gurus' out there would be appreciated. I hope you all had a great Independence Day! I am stuck offshore. Drink one for me! Kenny
  8. A while back someone had a thread asking about some good headphones. I was wondering if anyone could relate that info here. I just read the one about the little ear bud type with the inline mute so I will probably try themtoo. And what the hell is a 'Boostaroo?'
  9. Pretty nifty. Where did you get the cf cylinder cover?
  10. I don't have the cheetah. I didn't like the way it looked. I just go tthe Givi DH196 (no lip, it gets higher at the front) but haven't had a chance to ride with it yet. I'll keep you posted.

I like the way the pipes set. I wonder if I could get a carbon set like that?

    rear shock

If that gets ya, have I got a story for you!! I had just put the new shock on and (being the genius that I am) checked the chain tension and NEVER ADJUSTED THE PRELOAD!! I noticed it was a little smooth but I assumed it was because of the new shock. My brother and I went riding on some back country roads and towards the end I thought I would crank down on her a bit. I ws rolling along at about 125-130 and I hit an asphalt repair patch that dropped the road about 1 1/2-2 inches. This is not uncommon on these old roads so It didn't even phase me. A few miles later on we stopped and my brother caught up to me with wide open eyes. He watched it happen. The rear had almost bottomed out. I never fealt it hit, but it was REAL close. Anyway, my fender is gone and my license plate is relocated way higher than normal. Its almost tucked inside the tail. My tire had come up so high that it had caught the plate and bent it in in the shape of the tire! It had also ripped out one of the plate hanger bolts (the ones with the little reflectors). We went to my brothers house and I straightened it out with a rubber mallet (the TRUE motorcycle mechanics weapon of choice) and bolted the plate back securelly. We also set everything up better for my weight. It was only all the way soft and we ended up upping it I think 5 notches!! I still don't have it all sorted right but at least it won't bottom again!!

    rear shock

That is what I am proposing to them. I made sure to emphasize the size of our group and that it is getting increasingly difficult (if not impossible) to find the proper springs for our most common mod. By agreeing to supply us they pretty much have the total market to themselves. The sales guy I spoke to seemed interested but he had to run it by the big dogs first.

    rear shock

Yes, that was me. I found the required spring at an outfit called 'Circuit One Racing' in California. They make their own springs and just happened to have one left in a corner somewhere. I had tried to get with them to see if they would make more for us here on an 'as needed' basis, but they haven't gotten back with me yet. I got it for a steal at $80. BTW, I got my '95 900RR shock on ebay for $42 bucks!!
  15. I have the Gorilla. 'Easy to install' is an understatement!! The cool thing about it is that there are a few options on tone. My brother saiys "Man, I never heard that tone before!" Exactly! If your bike has the exact tone as everyone elses you can't tell if it is going off or not. I can always tell if the Gorilla is hollerin'!
  16. I have a cool avatar that I was finally able tyo save to my harddrive. How do I submit it and also how do I post pics?
  17. C'mon ya bunch of wussies! I bought in, you should too! Not everyone can have the rubber chicken keychains to mark them as carriers of 'The Precious' but we all can have custom reverse indiglo gauges as a badge of membership! Dam...........I should go into politics!
