  1. Hello there guys! Yes, I am back on land for the time being. I got 'home' officially last Tuesday, but I had to go to Houston Wednesday morning until Late Friday evening. So I've been running around trying to catch up. I finally paid off all of my credit cards and that just doesn't seem right so I'm shopping again. What can I say? I'm also about to trade in the Envoy for an '05 Nissan Frontier as soon as the nice divorce attorney says its OK. My bet is that I'll have at least ordered the truck by the end of the week. PLUS, I'm about to buy a friends Yamaha Raptor to go with the Honda 400EX I bought two months ago for $400!! Life is definitelly taking a turn towards the light for me. I still haven't found a woman to spend my time with, though. Of course, 'spend' is the operative word. I'm having too much fun to hook up just yet! I don't want Miss Right, just Miss RIGHT NOW!! I'm in the last leg of the divorce thing. I thought it was final on March 15th but that was only the 180 day separation. Officially it was final today and all that is left is the writing of the payoff check. I can not wait to be done with this! Once it is done I will be able to take off on those wonderful two or three day trips that I am so fond of. I might even go for the Key West trip this fall. Who knows. We'll have to stay in touch and plan another ride. Do it soon, though because I think buetner is having to sell his bike!!! Take it easy and keep it greasy, The Kenster
  2. Okay, boys and girls, I need to tap into your vast knowledge. I have decided to upgrade and replace the stock front rotors on my '99 with Braking Waves. I would like to know where I can get the best price on a set. I just replaced my brake pads about 200 miles ago so I don't think I should replace them again. I also want to replace the chain and sprockets.......maybe I can get all this stuff at the same place? How about you, Louie? You carry all this? Have a nice day!
  3. You know, it's amazing how many people keep making that very same offer! How ya doing Mr. T? I hope the lovelly Mrs. T is doing fine as well? Tell her 'Hi!' for me when you read this. Oh, and check out my latest post in the Pub.
  4. Thanks guys! And a big Howdy to ya Porter! I've been crazy busy latelly (home 6 days in the last two months!) but I'm back now (sort of.) I'm on nights and I can goof off on the computer for a while. P.S.: I just got Nik to send me the pic of him peeing on the Harley sign. My boss rides an Electraglide and I'm gonna put that pic as my desktop background! Gotta love the board!
  5. no kiddin'? I just got a set of Avons and I now have a "no hands shimmy." I thought it was maybe the tire out of balance, or the fact that my left caliper is .002 out and the right is .032 out. I guess its just the nature of the beast with those Avons. Oh, and I probably need to check my bearings also, seeing as I have 23k on it and I bought it at 7300! What do those tapered bearings go for and where can I get them?
  6. Hello boyos! I've been out for a while and now I'm back with a brand new project: a 2001 400EX four wheeler that I got for $400! Of course, for that price it needs a little work and therein lies the question. This bike comes with a 38mm carb. It also comes with a bad oil ring, so I'm boring it. The question is, if I bore it .040 over, it goes from a bore of 85mm to 86.014mm. Will I need to rejet the carb to get max benefits? Will it be too lean in stock condition? The exhaust on it now is stock but has the baffles removed. I have a complete stock muffler coming because I don't like the way it sounds right now. Any advice would be appreciated.

    Brake Pads

I was about to post this question also. What are the best pads? I do all street riding with occassional 'spirited' riding. I want something that won't eat my new Wave rotors and that will last pretty good. Any suggestions?

    Gauge Faces

Hey bud! They look great! How did you get your needles to be orange? Did you paint them or something? Mine were white and didn't lite up at night so I couldn't see at night. Thats why I got rid of them.
  10. I was in on the original buy for these. They are OK in the daylight, but terrible at night. For whatever reason, the needles don't light up after you install the faces. Its weird, because they light up fine without and you never have to remove anything, just cover up the old ones. Plus the fact that they are white and the needles are too makes it hard to read your speedo at all......... Not that any of US ever read it anyway................. Anyway, I gave them to baijjer9 so he can give you a second opinion when (and if: USPS) they get to him.
  11. Hello boyos! I have a slightly warped right front rotor. It doesn't pulse at the lever or reduce my braking power but I can hear it rubbing on the same place all the time. Has anyone ever fixed something like this? There is a guy in B.R. that I heard has had success fixing slight warps, but I am a bit leary of that. These things are pretty specialized and they don't take to 'bending back' very well. I was thinking about a set of those 'Wave' rotors. Has anyone got a set? Can you use all the other stock components? Brake pads? Do they effect the linked system? Can Louie get some for me? Please help the poor uneducated offshore trash. Thanks! Ken
  12. OK. I just got a new Avon 45 front tire. The tire shop guy pointed out to me that if he put the tire on the rim in the direction of the arrow (like it is supposed to be) the tread is running backwards. My question is: Is it supposed to be like that or did I get a FUBAR'd tire? It is mounted and I will install it today but I can't ride until later on due to weather. HELP!! Ken
  13. Also, you should never disconnect the pos or neg cable on an FI bike while running. I know that was the de facto test of the alternator in older cars and carbureted bikes, but not with FI. The computer looks for about 14.5 volts to work correctly. Which means it needs the battery and the alternator working together for a constant feed. If you disconnect the battery it not only doesn't get the constant feed, but it also gets a lower feed from just the battery. This condition could seriously damage the computer. Trust me, I've seen it a bunch of times. I worked at Autozone and that is the first thing they taught us in the training on electrical system troubleshooting. People would come in and tell us that they did that and now their car wouldn't run at all. It usually required a computer replacement.......BIG bucks.
  14. OK, here's the deal: It all works just splendidly if you plug the airbox sensor back in. D'oh! We've had the first not crappy weather in two months all weekend and I didn't ride because I thought the old girl was sick. It was all my fault. Its OK, though. I am going riding ALL DAY LONG today!
  15. I had a negative as well as positive experience with them. Neg: I ordered a K&N AH-1199 air filter for my '99. I received an AH-1199 box with an AH-6500 filter in it. Pos: It arrived right on time. When I called and told them what happened, he put one in the mail that afternoon and asked me if I wanted to ship the other one back to them or have UPS pick it up. As I was going to the post office anyway I told him I would send it back to them. He said OK and asked what the shipping charge on the box was. He said that he would credit me for the cost and appologized for the mistake. He was very polite and seemed genuinelly concerned when I told him there was a problem with my order. (Plus, for some reason I saved $3.42 on the shipping as it was cheaper to send it back!) P.S.: This only stays positive if I get my new filter in a timelly fashion!) It stays positive. I called them about the screw up Friday AM and the new one arrived Monday!
  16. First, went to install the K&N and it was the wrong one in the box.GRRRRRR. Then I installed the Micron slip-ons......Suweeeeet! but the 'FI' light came on. i figured, 'OK, yeah. Its major lean now.' So I plugged in the PC II and it stayed on. I played around with the buttons to richen it up and I can't get it to clear. I have no laptop so I wasn't able today, but my friend is coming by after work tommorrow to reload the map. It is suppossed to be mapped for a K&N and the slip-ons. Has anyone else been through this? When my correct filter comes in should everything be OK? Also, I noticed the left muffler was blowing much colder than the right. I didn't let it run for too long with the 'FI' light on, but is this normal? It's pretty much a straight shot for the right while the left has 2 90 degree turns in it so it seems logical to me that it would be colder. At least until they are at operating temperature. Insight or suggestions please. Thanks!
  17. OK. I just got the new PC II and I was wondering how waterproof they are? It seems that every time I decide to take a trip I end up riding a few hundred miles in the pouring down rain. My question is will it survive? The cables are relativelly short so it pretty much has to ride in the back near the seat latch. Do I need to design some sort of mutant Tupperware box to keep it safe from the rain? or will that cause condensation and more of a problem than sollution? I installed a cigarete lighter loose under the seat for my cell phone on the trip and I keep that wrapped in a baggie with no problem so maybe it would work. Of course, the outlet was about 6 bucks and the PC was $300 so you can see my concern......... *How's this for a strange occurence: On the way to the Honda Hoot last year it started raining about 25 miles from the house and continued to rain until the day AFTER we got there. Anyway, every so often my tachometer needle would just drop off to zero.....while cruising along at 90+. The engine never hiccupped or bucked or anything but the tach just crapped out for like ten seconds. Then it would slowly come up to about 2500 and jiggle there for a few seconds, then go back to all normal. It did that about 6 times during that trip and has never done it again. Weired, huh?
  18. Here's an 'oft-asked' question: Will I have to run premium fuel in my '99 when I put the PC II, K&N and slip-ons on it? I usually run the medium grade, but from what I hear the upgrades may increase my mileage so a switch to premium wouldn't be a big deal.
  19. I did mine last week also. Does your rear brake feel like its dragging? I did them in the order of the manual and even re-did the rear and it still feels like its dragging. Any suggestions?
  20. Go to this website http://www.themotorhead.com in the 'got boost' section and try to get in touch with 'the motorhead' himself. His name is Dennis and that is what he does for a living..turbocharge bikes. He may be able to give you some straightforward answers.
  21. I have a Pit Bull front stand that is great. The only problem is that I have to take off the front fender so the stem pin doesn't scratch the underside of my upper cowl. 4 bolts, 30 seconds. No big deal. I also have a lockhart Phillips race stand fro the back. It worked well with the smaller bikes I've had ('Zuki TL-S, Superhawk) but the 'Bird is a little heavy for it. The steel is rather thin walled, so where the swingarm pads go through its starting to 'flex.' It isn't 'about to go' or anything, but the paint has cracked from stress. Plus the padding on the swingarm pads is peeling off. Its about 6 years old now so its to be expected. I made a deal with a guy who does spray on bedliners to coat them for me but haven't gotten around to it yet. I usually just use the center stand and the Pit Bull.

    Radiator Fan

If its hot enough for the fan to come on, its usually in traffic. When I stop I just turn the bar switch off and let the fan go while I take off my gear. If its still running after that, oh well.
  23. Sorry....you're right of course. I should have been a bit more specific. I have run both the 010 and 020 tires. I currently run the 020 because of increased mileage and I had a bad experience with the thinner sidewalls of the 010 on the street. They are great on a track or other controlled environment, but I prefer the durability of the 020 for the mean streets of souoth Louisiana. ( I once lost a horse in a pothole........)
  24. I run Bridgestone Battlax tires and I am perfectly happy with them. As for the $$$ I only have one thing to say: www.discountmotorcycletire.com They have the best prices I've seen outside of closeouts.
  25. Last year I went to Deals Gap twice and got 185+ per tank all the way there. This is with huge saddlebags, a monster 'dry bag' on the seat and at no less that 85 mph the entire way. I tend to agree with you though. We didn't buy a XX for great fuel economy. These things will pass up everything BUT a gas station!
