  1. UPDATE!

Today I was planning on checking the plug wires AGAIN...

I fired her up and tried to rev it up, completely dead stick... revving like a harley, no guts whatsoever... took a peek at the power commander, no reading at all...WHAT?!?

I tugged on the display, and it sprung to life, throttle was AWESOME, screamed up the dial, no hesitation.

I moved the display again, bike died completely...

I'm spending the rest of the night with my soldering iron and some shrink tube, hopefully when i'm done checking all these connections, my bike will be running like a champ again...

    Fingers Crossed!

  2. I learned something this week that may be revelant here, in short, and without background, too rich.

Had a condition that looked like lean in that the plug would not color. After talking to the builder of the engine, we were way rich and it was washing the plug white.

Everything, was fine other than what sounded like hitting the rev limiter, and shifting, would bring it back to kicking.

I am guessing that is what is going on. Bet it is in plugs, coil, wires, or exhaust, if it is not a leak from the FPR.

    Thanks for the info Stan...

FPR SEEMS okay, not noticing any fuel down that vacuum hose anywhere

I pulled plug wire 3, trimmed it back about 1/4 inch and rethreaded it onto the plug cap, seems to have helped a little bit, so i'll try it on the rest of them. (noticed a crack in the rubber on #3)

Ordering some new spark plug caps if I find anything else fishy there...

might have something to do with a worn chain, too...

but there is definitely an engine issue here (there is some missing in neutral, too)

I'm considering taking it up to the local stealer and letting them diagnose it if i don't figure it out soon. Hopefully they can get her done quick and I'll be at 100% for nexxt

  3. Is it the same whether the engine is completely warmed up or not and does it matter what the steady state rpm is?

I would check that no hose is loosened and after that take a compression test.

actually seems to be a bit worse as temps go up...

more noticeable at higher rpm's at lower speeds... 1st second gear between 30 and 40 mph but is present regardless of rpm range

  4. My 2001 XX is running kinda funky...

It seems to have plenty of power, but when trying to maintain speed, it seems to be VERY jerky. (if i whack open the throttle she runs like a raped ape, but maintaining speed is jerky)

    no FI light

I just replaced the plugs and that seemed to help a little bit, but the issue is still there.

I also just ran a bottle of fuel injector cleaner through it.

it "feels" like a spark problem...but i'm not 100% sure

any tips or advice would be appreciated. Thanks

  5. It's there for a good reason!

Years ago I had a good friend that rode a triumph.

At least he did till he went round a sweeper with his side stand down.

    Last ride for him.

+1, happened to me on my 77 CB750, the bike died....

I got launched into the mud in this guy's front yard, and the bike ended up tumbling through the air...something like 8 times over...

  6. I just ordered some parts from Bike Bandit. They have all the schematics on line. It was fairly easy to find what I needed. It is a bit of a challenge to figure out from the picture, if the fastener you are looking for matches what is in the drawing. I rely more on the location, than the depicted image.

What annoys me is that the stupid little plastic trim clips from Honda (push in to lock) are three bucks each. I think my local dealer was charging four or five dollars each. Spare levers ( which I hope never to need) ran $65 for the pair w/o hardware.

I'll write in again after I get the order.

John's got the plastic dealys for $6 and some change, and you get a bag of 10

    edit:

    $6.95

  7. Balancing is easy.

Its just....balancing. Same principle. If you don't have any equipment, put the axle through the wheel and set each end on a stack of books. Take your time and you'll get a great result. Some of us are lucky enough to have official balancers, which is nice, but its like a box end wrench to an air ratchet. Same result, just slightly snazzier in the execution.

Doesn't friction get in the way?

I balanced a next gen CT scanner rotor within a gram, but at the time we were using an air bearing, it had a coefficient of friction of .00002

so any imbalance anywhere on that rotor was vividly apparent just by stoping motion, seeing which way it turned, and where it stopped. (point directly between the start point and stop point was the heavy side, add a gram or 2 to the opposite side...depending on acceleration)

  8. I dropped my wheels off at the local Kawasucky dealer on Monday(no honda shops left in the county). This place is pretty barren, and empty most of the time, so I knew they wouldn't be busy. I was hoping for same day service, but the guy behind the counter told me it would probably be "overnight" service, and they would be done on tuesday...but he would call me when they were ready.

    tuesday, No call

    wednesday, no call

    thursday, no call yet...

    what gives?

3 great riding days down the toilet so far... :icon_banghead:

what kind of service have you guys recieved?

  9. What about Yoshimura? The slip on sets go for about $550, I think. Too loud? Also, if the rest of the engine is stock, and you upgrade to new cans, do you need to do the Power Commander thing?

    Mike

yosh is a respectable brand, and no, you don't need to remap with most slip-ons. You can, but you shouldn't have to...

  10. Sweet!

I've been tinkering with a similar project on my '97 for quite awhile, but haven't had time to work on it much lately.

I went with a '95 VFR swingarm since the linkage on the '90-'92 was so much different than the XX's. The biggest obstacle of the whole project is the fact that the XX shock mounts dead center on the frame and the VFR is offset to the left. This makes for some funky linkage no matter which Viffer swingarm you use.

I'm also doing a few other mods along with the swingarm so it's gotten a little overwhelming.

I'm looking forward to seeing yours when it's completed. Keep at it. :icon_thumbsup:

    is that a fireblade tail?

  11. straighten it, you have the dial indicator!!!!
I assume you are serious since I don't see a smiley. And I don't have anything to lose. I have heard of someone using a crescent wrench to tweek a rotor, and I was thinking of using a rubber mallet. Can this really be done? And my brother in law is a machinist, I wonder if machining it flat would work.

if you have a good metal lathe, you could turn it without much trouble
