sandman Posted February 21, 2004 Posted February 21, 2004 I have a '97, and was wondering if anyone out there has updated their early XX with one of the newer, longer oem lenses. Is it a simple bolt on as I'm hoping? I need all the safety advantages I can get around here. I'm also thinking of adding led bulbs to replace the stock #1157's- any possible issues there that anyone can clue me in on? Thanks for any advice! Quote
Redbird Posted February 21, 2004 Posted February 21, 2004 Sadly, not a direct swap. I don't know of anyone who's tried it, but I imagine it'd be involved, perhaps going as far as swapping the fender. Chicago, eh? We've got a few members local around here (I'm in Naperville) Keep your eye on the meets section, we do at least a couple runs out to the Galena area every year if you're interested. Welcome aboard. Quote
sandman Posted February 21, 2004 Author Posted February 21, 2004 Thanks for the help guys, even though it's not what I was hoping to hear. Didn't realize the tail section plastic was different to accomodate the larger '99-up lens- bummer. I still think the advantages of the led bulbs will be worth it then, and I assume the current draw won't be different or a problem... Will definitely try to hook up this season for a Galena run- I've heard the roads are well worth the trip west to reach them! Quote
Redbird Posted February 21, 2004 Posted February 21, 2004 The current draw for the LEDs will be considerably less. Not an issue unless you're using 'em for signals. Quote
birdie_xx Posted February 21, 2004 Posted February 21, 2004 As far as I know, the tailsection is the same ! The fender is different. But the new light other then the size, has actually less powerfull bulbs. You could get the LED 1157 bulbs. The new light uses different bulbs... Cheers, Quote
Suf Daddy Posted February 28, 2004 Posted February 28, 2004 I have a 1157 right here in my hand. I've been doing experiments with it: 3 THINGS: Brake Beam on Ebay? Not the best: You need two they sell them 1 at a time. MANY sellers out there. Shop around LEDTronics Inc., and other have MULTIPLE sites. Get 1157 30 LEDs minimum. Find the new ones with extra facing backwards Some of these companies (do yahoo.com & google.com search) sell LEDs off the back of the bulb MAJOR IMPOROVEMENT !!!! Why? Well those back facing LED project NO light into the brake lens reflector (where the bulb going into.) So they are dim in comaprison Vs. Incadescents. Because the incadescent bulb actually projects light behind it due to the balloon shape of the glass. I have DVD-R video I can e-mail about the test.-Suf Daddy I have a '97, and was wondering if anyone out there has updated their early XX with one of the newer, longer oem lenses. sandman Posted February 28, 2004 Author Posted February 28, 2004 Excellent info Suf Daddy! Thanks so much for enlightening me (pun intended). I thought it was just a simple question of popping in any replacement 1157 led, but you've educated me here. I now know the way to go with this- thanks much, man. Quote
