tomek Posted January 1, 2005 Posted January 1, 2005 It looks like my 1990 rx7 turbo project/restoration got going.Questions. How much paint do I need ,a gallon, thats before reducer,it is small 2 door coupe, like a Vette. Will be sprayed only on the outside shell. I know PPG is quality paint, what else is good. Is 5hp 60 gal compressor strong enough to power HVLP gun like devilbiss plus ? What about House of Kolor paint,I like some of their stuff but can it be mixed to mazda`s blaze red SQ paint ? Can regular basecoat/clearcoat be "pearled" ( I guess I`m partially guy) by adding dry pearls. I have access to spray buff with compressor, filters etc and decided to do the job myself. Thank God there is no bodywork involved in the project. I have seen some 1-2 grand oversprays and they make me puke,I don`t want to spend $$$$$ to have quality paint job. Any pro advise will be remembered and appreciated !!!!!!!!! Happy New Year !!!!!!!! . . Quote
matey_peeps Posted January 3, 2005 Posted January 3, 2005 I'll see if our paint guy is in today and get back with you when I have some answers. Quote
matey_peeps Posted January 3, 2005 Posted January 3, 2005 And we're back. How much paint do I need For something of that size, you'll likely need 2 qts of paint (will make a gallon of finished paint) and a gallon of clear and all the reducers and activators that go along with it. I know PPG is quality paint, what else is good. We'd suggest DuPont Chroma Base for ease of use and that you'll not to buy a bunch of extra stuff you won't need. Is 5hp 60 gal compressor strong enough to power HVLP gun like devilbiss plus ? Probably. What about House of Kolor paint,I like some of their stuff but can it be mixed to mazda`s blaze red SQ paint ? House of Kolor does some neat stuff, but it's all aftermarket and won't match OE colors. It's also important to NOT use House of Kolor clear, as it's not the best stuff available and since House of Kolor stuff isn't as colorfast as DuPont or PPG, their clear doesn't sheild UV well enough for long-term results. Can regular basecoat/clearcoat be "pearled" ( I guess I`m partially GAY) by adding dry pearls. Sure it can. It can either be mixed into a binder or into the clear, but then you'll need to lay down another layer of plain clear so when you buff you don't buff into the pearl. Quote
Northman Posted January 4, 2005 Posted January 4, 2005 I'd start off with 6 cans, myself. Quote
tomek Posted January 4, 2005 Author Posted January 4, 2005 Thanks,I`ll buy 2 gallons just to be safe  most likely will end up painting car 2-3 times befory I get good results Quote
EVLXX Posted January 4, 2005 Posted January 4, 2005 I'd start off with 6 cans, myself.  Good one! Have You ever done this before Tomek? Do you have a background painting anything large.... besides a house? Automotive painting is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay different than latex! For practice go to your local grocery store, buy yourself a bottle of corn syrup and then spray it on something large and round. If you can get a uniform coating without running it..... then you MIGHT be ready. PS. I'm not trying to discourage you. Quote
speedygeezer Posted January 4, 2005 Posted January 4, 2005 What is the CFM rating of your compressor? That will be the determining factor of what type of paint gun you can use. What minimum CFM does your gun require? We've been using PPG for years and have tried others. The most important step in achieving a good-looking paint job is surface preparation, and that takes a lot of time and wet-sanding and primer and more wet-sanding. If you don't mind an orange-peel appearance, you can dispense with those steps. Of course, you can always just shoot it with some enamel and be done with it.....depends on what you want it to look like and how much time/effort you want to put into it. Good luck. Quote
