  1. Up for sale is my one owner, 1999 Blackbird!!! It has been garage kept for most of it's life (a couple years under a carport) and has never been wrecked. Dropped once in a yard and tipped over once in a driveway. Only reason I'm selling, is I am making room in the garage for a Super Tenere!!! the older I get, the better the riding position of the Adv-Tourer feels. My Bird has 58k miles, Has full Givi setup (wingrack, E360 side cases and E50 topcase all keyed the same) Thottelmeister, Helibars, Cheetah SST windscreen, Ram mount, Sargent seat, K&N air filter, stock mapping and exhaust, Newer set of Pilot Road 3 tires with about 900 miles. Original windscreen, bar ends, and other spare bits go with bike. Solder "Loom Fix" a few years back, New Stator two months ago. Synthetic Castrol always used. Well maintained. Going to be hard to part with this bike, as it has been a great one! $3800 with Givi setup, $3200 without. Local Fella picked it up....Givi and all!!!
  2. Picked up the bike this week and had a chat with my mechanic. Stator was bad... he handed it to me and it looked like he just took it off my grill after cooking for a few hours...all black and toasty. He said he wasn't even sure why it was working! But said, when it got hot, expansion was taking place and wires were seperating, that was likely the culprit for part of my charging dilemma. Another issue I had was that the aux driving lights I have had on there for the last however many years were shorting out and causing a significant voltage drop (10.2) when turned on. Maybe time for a new set or a better headlight bulb. And finally, he said that he thinks my fan may be heading in the direction of a dirt nap. He said it is pulling slightly more than it should. The bike voltage drops to about 12.7-13 (I think) when it kicks in. Otherwise, the bike is charging fine (about 13.9-14.4) when running. At my request, due to suggestions here, he did take a look at the relay and other connectors and cleaned as necessary. I also think it is about time for a voltage/amperage meter to sit somewhere on the dash to keep an eye on things while under way since the ole Bird is getting some grey in her feathers! Thanks for all the help folks.
  3. Well... mechanic called today. Said the stator was bad, but test didn't show it was bad until it warmed up. He also said there was a drop in voltage when the cooling fan came on. In addition, he said I couldn't run the aux lights while the high beam was on...the voltage dropped then also. He said the battery passed a load test. hmmmm
  4. Took my 99 Bird with almost 60K miles to the shop the other day with new Stator and R/R in hand (parts bought a fews ago in anticipation of failure and found a fried R/R connector). My complaint... the battery needs to be charged every so many weeks in order to continue starting, like maybe the battery isn't charging while riding or the system isn't charging like it should anyway. Past electrical fixes; the loom solder fix & the R/R connector fix. Never used a tender since I bought the bike new, I usually try and ride year round. Although, this winter didn't host too many miles for me. I have tried to start the bike every few weeks and run it til warm, then shut it back off, however, this problem has been going on since late spring of last year. Only electric farkles are a set of 55watt fog type lights wired directly to the battery. They do a great job lighting up that dark spot up to 25 feet just in front of the bike. Man, the broadcast of that stock headlight beam sucks! (he didn't see them at first to test voltage while they were on, but will Monday) Info so far......The mechanic calls me this past Friday and states he tested the electrical system including stator and R/R (both original equipment) are fine! He said he hasn't load tested the battery yet, but would this Monday. He did say the voltage produced was fine and only dropped significantly (to 10.4) when the high beam was on?!?!? It is a standard Wal-Mart cheapo 55/60 bulb (had to replace it while on a ride several years back). His question to me was if the bulb was a 55/100 watt, and if so, that may explain the voltage drop, but I am pretty sure it is a 55/60. He will double check. Also, the battery is just about a year old. I believe the problem may have started just prior to the new battery. I had to purchase a battery while on a trip to WV last year due to not being able to charge the old one and it died twice on that trip. Hopefully he tells me he load tested the battery and it has a bad cell or something. Or maybe this is coincidence and I seemed to have purchased a dud battery last year, but at this point, I just want my Bird to be it's dependable old self...this is our last year together! I will be replacing it with a Tenere' or Triumph Explorer 1200 over the winter! Anything I might want to add in talking to him Monday?
  5. Hi there. I just sent you a PM let me know if the seat is still available thanks Gregg Sorry Gregg... the seat SOLD on e-bay by meeting the reserve
  6. SOLD SOLD SOLD SOLD SOLD SOLD I bought this seat used from a friend of mine as you see it. He says it is a Gunfighter and Lady. I road this seat once. About a 2200 mile trip. Rump never got fatigued, however, it is a bit too low for me. I am just over six feet and my Sargent is a better height (1.5 inches above stock) and I believe this Corbin is about one inch lower than stock. Guess I'll take the money from this seat and get my Sargent panned a little more. The only damage it has is a very small "nic" in the passenger mount area. Price of $300 includes shipping to lower 48 only. All others interested in shipping outside the contiguous US will be charged extra accordingly.
  7. I see where that could be a statement to beat your brow at, however, I am inclined enough to remove most "plug and play" items and do some minor repairs. Regulator, I would try, but the stator would intimidate me. Funny thing is... as a medic, I can "fix" people, but fixing bikes is something I have never been taught. :icon_snooty:
  8. have had chatterbox for about 6 years. I would score it about a 75 out of 100... Pros: Works well around town and at speeds under 50 to passenger or other rider. Works great as a means to get mp3 and the like into your helmet. Push to talk button works well. Use a single cable to helmet and hook everything else up, including unit, in a "Manta" (small) tank bag. Cost compared to other units is relatively inexpensive. Cons: VOX (voice activation) is worthless. Speeds over 50 suck with all helmets... you get too much wind noise in the mic. After 4 years, cables needed to be replaced. Bulky mounted on helmet, and mounting hardware breaks easily. Just one man's humble opinion
  9. I'm not a mechanic... so I won't pretend to use all the right terminology. My 99 bird has had some electrical issues. Did the loom fix 2 years ago, all went well. Last fall, on my way to Canada, the bird dies. Found a melted, burnt wire harness just off the regulator. Shop tested the system and found everything to be putting out normal voltage. Replaced the harness and sent me on my way. All was well til a recent ride, about 80 or so miles, I smell a plastic burning smell. Get home and feel the same harness.... real hot and so is the regulator. Havent had time to replace the regulator yet, but do have one standing by (as well as a stator). I don't have voltmeter, and wouldnt be 100% sure I was using it right anyway, i'm sure it isnt too difficult, but I just dont trust me, as Ive never used one before.... should I just replace the regulator?
  10. Lots of tires, a few chains, and the regular consumables... 1999 50K miles Had to replace: rear axle stripped on first tire change front fork seals, springs and oil steering head bearing wire loom fix rubber tool thingy went several times a few rivets (push pins) 2 caliper bolts stripped out Reg/rectifer went this past week (ordering parts this week) Stator going to be replace just for good measure along with R/R (Electrosport seems to have good price on both) Will need to replace soon: CCT (I think- sounds a little rough upon startup and then goes away) rear shock (looking for a great deal still)
  11. Enroute now... it was a long wait for my buddies, but, it"s all good. Should get to Canada by 3am or so.
  12. Mike, Jason and Ricky went to get the truck and trailer and my backup bike (DR650). We are still determined to drive straight thru to Canada tonight. They should be here to load up the Bird within the next 30 min's. Until then, I just blew up my air mattress and took a nap... til some spider ran across my face and woke me! We are hoping for Toronto by 1 or 2 am.... (As thunder cracks loudly in the background)... Still going to make it to Bob's on Thursday, try to fix the Bird and make the rally.
  13. Joe.. thanks a lot for the help and the offers. A really appreciate it. Powering off the laptop to save battery now. I'll let you guys know how it turned out!
  14. Yeah...but are you going to be at the CSBA fall rally?????
