motor choppy sounding

Just wanting to know if motor is supposed to sound like it has a choppy cam sound till about 2800rpms. After that it starts to clear up, kind of reminds me of the big block chevy motor with a large cam in it. Bike runs fine but I have only put about 300 miles on it. I am also wondering if two tanks of gas that got a average of 36.69mpg sounds right? I am still riding fairly easy now while trying to get adjusted to the power and acceleration of the motor.

My '00 always has kind of a deep "lumpy" idle

right after you fire it up cold, but after two or

three minutes of warming up, it will gradually

smooth out and settle down to a consistent

900 rpm idle. My bike is box-stock - no cans,

headers, Power Commander, etc, etc.

Mileage will vary depending on how you ride.

I usually get 38 mpg but recently, just as an

experiment, I intentionally held speed to 65-70

and the straights (while playing in the curves)

and got 44.75mpg, my best gas mileage ever

(Odometer read 226 miles, took on 5.05 gals.)

Overzealous throttle twisting makes a huge

difference in mileage. BTW, my gearing is stock.

I am shifting between 5kand 6k as I am still very leary of getting on to much. My bike still has the choppy sound after it warms up and it idles around 1100. The bike has the yoshi slipons that came with it. With 12,800 miles maybe I need to change plugs and air filter? I have been working alot after I got the bike really haven't had much time to do to much maintenance checking yet,but I am very happy so far.

It will sound like that with the slip ons.

Normal.

Ride it.

Fast.

I plan on picking up the speed, I am still amazed at how fast this bike can be. :icon_surprised:

Wait'll you see the other side of 7K at WFO. There is another bike lurking there. I'd suggest your first excursion into this range be in second or higher gear. :icon_evilgrin:

The Yosh cans may add to the choppy nature. Ridden easily you should get a bit better mileage. Check your plugs when you have a chance...
