Unknown part found on my bike

I am getting the bird ready for a long trip (Tennessee), take the two side fairings off to do an anti-freeze change and take a flash light to look around. On the left side looking in on top of the tranny area I find the following part sitting loose. Anyone have any ideas if this is a necessary part? Important?

It is about two inches long, pretty serious clamp on one end, the other end has a cap with an extender to go into the tube, yes it is hollow. Appears to be rubber.

Piece of broken off hose and the plug for the airbox breather tube?

Brian, I agree with Byrdman , looks to me like it was put together by someone to block a hole on the air box or pair valve system....or is it a crank case breather.

I Haven't done the Pair block off change, or changed any other hoses. I am the original owner, the only thing I can think of is the dealer did a valve check( in speck except for one shim) changed out the rear shock to an ohlins and thats about it. That was done 2 years ago. It is possible I guess that it sat on the rear of the engine block for all that time with out falling out but seems odd to me. Can't locate where it could possibly go.

Damn.

Should I lift off the gas tank and see if a hose is missing something?

I think that's a home-made tool... maybe...

If the tubing is the same size as your vent lines, I'd speculate that a tech made it as a temporary plug when troubleshooting the vent line system. The plug would be installed on any of the male fittings and the corresponding vent line could be connected to a vacuum gauge. Readings would be taken and recorded from each seperate line; significant discrepancies would indicate and identify any compromised/leaking lines.

If it's the size of your fuel line... a temporary plug for tank removal..?

A tech probably lost or forgot it...

I dropped one of them little rubber buttons that you screw your windsheild screws into. I didn't worry about it as I had some spares in the tool box. 2,500 miles later while do an oil change I found it. It somehow laid between the motor and the foam on the side panels all that time. That little booger made a couple trips to WV, a bunch of high speed runs and never moved.
