Yes and yes. You can plug headphones in directly, but I found that I need an amp (boostaroo does fine) to get decent sound level out of it. The prob I had with the roady and the roady 2 is that it seems the vibration from riding caused constant probs in getting sound to the earphones.

I use the in line amp from the Aerostitch catalog. Cheap, I think around $15 or so. No batteries and very easy to use, nice and loud too :icon_wink:

Whether you need an amp will depend a lot on what type of earbud or earphones you're using.

No amp or seperate volume control on mine. Output level set on three of five, ER2s, done. It's too loud set on five, though I do bump it up to four on occasion.
