Arioch5
I've noticed a very slow oil leak (I thought hondas don't do this) and I need a little advice. After cleaning up the oil pan I ran it around for 10-15min to see if I could tell where the oil was coming from. What I found is that one of the bolts that hold the oil pan on is letting some oil out around the head. After checking the manual I couldn't find a specific ft-lb to tighten 'oil pan bolts' to but I did find that 10mm Flange Bolts should be at 29ft-lbs. I tightened this leaking bolt to 25 (it was at 22 or 23 from what I could tell) and ran it, but it still has a slow leak. I really don't want to screw up the oil pan and over tighten a bolt so can someone glance at the manual and tell me if that 29ft-lb for all 10mm flange bolts is what is recommended? Secondly, should this bolt even have to be this tight? Should the oil pan seal keep the oil from even getting to the threads of this bolt? I was wondering if maybe there is a problem with the oil pan seal around this bolt. If that is the case, if the only leak is coming from this bolt (seems to be the case right now) couldn't I just get a small gasket for a 10mm bolt and put it on the leaking bolt? Seems to me like that would keep it from leaking and the only difference will be that the small amount of oil that settles into the threads of the bolt instead of staying in the oil pan. Thanks for your help.
Guest rockmeupto125
Do NOT tighten that bolt any more. Those bolts should take somwhere around 9 foot-pounds.
Arioch5
 9! The thing was already at 22-23. So I guess that means it's not b/c it's to loose but a seal leak :?
Guest rockmeupto125
If that was the torque required to break it free, it may not accurately reflect the true value it sat at. Torque needs to be measured dynamically....that is, you should reach the desired torque level while the wrench is turning. I think you are in for changing the oil pan gasket. Or pretend you have a Hardley for a little while....
Arioch5
Yea I actually set it to 23 ft-lbs and tried to tighten the bolt so I know it was at 23 before. Of course that could just be b/c the last person was trying to stop the leak  Yea I figure I'll replace the oil pan seal I just don't want to do it untill it's colder. I think that requires more than just ... unscrew oil pan, put on new seal, attach oil pan. Anyone know where I could get a small rubber seal to put around this bolt for now just to minimize the leak untill I replace the oil pan seal? Would Homedepot or Lowes carry something like that? Guest rockmeupto125
Most any hardware store would have something of the sort. You'd want a flat washer rather than an O-ring if possible. And less torque, of course. Let us know how you make out. My guess is that it won't work, but its easy and cheap to try.
