Which bulbs in dash??

Pete in PA

Recommended Posts

I replaced 2 of the 4 bulbs in my insturments while apart for deer damage.

Now I have 2 bright spots and 2 dim spots. Bulbs were the same size but apparently different wattage.

Owners/service manual doesn't tell you what type of bulb just that they are 1.7 watt each.

Now I've got to rip it apart again once I have the right bulbs.

Does anyone else hate how each fairing piece is interconnected?

You can't take the windshield off without removing the inner trim, can't take the inner trim off without taking off this, and so forth.

Huh? My windshield comes right off, independant of any other bodywork. Six bolts, done.

So how do you hold the well nuts for the windshield without removing the inner cowl?

Never needed to, I thought that was the point of a wellnut.

Sorry, can't help with the bulb.

My well nuts stay in my screen when I take it off. When I broke my screen and had to remove and reinstall the well nuts, they were a bitch to get into the new screen. They aren't going anywhere.

Mine are not stuck in the screen. I just tighten them while holding from underneath.

Might be why I've never had one destroyed or lost.

BTW: for all future searches, the dash bulbs are # 168 for years 97, 98 and probably 99. Bought all four tonight at Wally World for $3.67.

They look for all the world like 194 bulbs but are not as bright.

Might also be why you have to dismantle half the bike to remove the screen :poke:

For the record, I've never damaged or lost one either.

Good info on the bulbs.

If you stick the bottom 2 well nuts half way through the screen doesn't that give you a gap at the bottom between screen and fairing?

I'll be looking again this morning.

I also get a white light reflection on my ZG ST screen at night now. Something changed with the new upper fairing. I may have to paint the top of my headlight.

Remembered I had the Givi sitting out in the garage with well nuts installed-

I've heard of gaps on some aftermarket screens, though I have no personal experience with it. Don't know if installing the well nuts the way you describe may help with any gap, but the above picture is how they were intended to be installed.

OK now I'm REALLY confused.

Bought 4, 168 bulbs, installed them in daylight under roof and looked good.

Rode last night and they still look too bright.

Which has higher wattage 194 or 168 :?: :?: Or do I need the actual Honda bulb because it's one of a kind?

Been doing Yahoo searches and can't find it.

More research IF anyone cares.

If anyone can tell me what MSCD stands for it would help. Mean ? current draw?

The following bulbs are all the same base, size, and fit in 97-99 dash.

158 .24 amp

161 .19 amp

168 .35 amp

193 .33 amp

194 .27 amp

I wish they listed watts since it calls for 1.7 watts.

I geuss I should apply the formula.

Can someone give me the ohms law formulas so I don't have to hunt it down?

W=V x A

Purty simple. 8)

13V x .19A = 2.5W

Looks like that's the lowest one you've found. Don't be fooled by a "non-working" draw or resistance, either. I had to test the draw with the lights lit to get an accurate reading.
