Involute
After installing my new Fenda-Extenda I noticed that the side of the front tire is really close the the fender on the clutch side of the bike. After snooping around a bit I see that the clutch side front wheel spacer is shorter than the one on the throttle side. It would make sense that in order to fix my wheel/fender clearance imbalance that I should have the shorter spacer on the other side. I can't see in the manual anywhere that specifies which side of the wheel the long or short spacer go. Can anyone enlighten me? Please? Can one of you that does not have this issue perhaps look at your spacers and tell me which side has the longer spacer? This is driving me nuts. Any help is appreciated. Thanks. Redbird
There is no spacer on the clutch side, that's the axle you're seeing. I don't think it's possible to screw it up, the axle will only go in from one side (the left), IIRC.
HERBXX
Hi , my first question is .. did you take the wheel off to install the extender the answe ? I just took the fender off to do mine. Assuming you have taken the wheel off or , of suspect it is on wrong. There is a line on the axle around the circumference on the round end, (end that doesnt have the hex bolt ). If ifremeber right the outer edge of the fork slider should just about split the line. Theres is a procedure in the manual for doing this right, but that what the line is for. If you lossen the pinch bolts that hold the axle roll the bike forward by and jam on the front brake and bounce the front end a few times the wheel will usually end up pretty much in the right place, then tighten the bolt tospec, use a torque wrench!! as they threaded into aluminum. After complete you should check the clearance between the caliper mount and the disc( see the manual) Herb I just usually eyeball it bu t that no the official way. Pete in PA
Per something I read in Motorcyclist I now bounce the front tire against a low object without using the brake (that will keep it from aligning) then tighten the pinch bolts. Still check caliper clearance with the .7 feeler gauge per the manual. There IS a spacer on both sides, short one goes on the left. When I remove a wheel I always remove hardware and lay it where it goes. Left spacer on left side etc.

Involute
Thanks for the reply's Gents. I did not take the wheel off for the install, just the Fender. The wheel has not been off since the last tire change and I always set the hardware up like Pete does but I may have screwed up at one time. I bought the bike used so it's possible something may have gone amiss with the previous owner and I just followed suit. I may well have put over 20K on the bike as it is right now and never noticed. The clearance check with the feeler gage in the manual has always yielded just enough clearance. I believe I've also always done the "Loose Pinch Bolt Bounce" everytime the Wheel has been off but I guess I'll need to pull the wheel off and check things out and re-do everything. I'll also verify that the Spacer with the groove is on the Throttle side. The clearance imbalance I have with the Fender may be normal for all I know it just bugs the hell out of me. Do any of you guys have the same issue with the Fender clearance on your bike? Maybe my Fender itself is the problem (?).
Redbird
Pete's right, there is a spacer on both sides. My mistake there. I'll still maintain the position that it's just about impossible to get them mixed up, though. One is about 3/4" longer than the other, you get them wrong and nothing else is going to line up. That's all based on looking at my '01, there were some changes to the front axle in '99 so it may not apply to '97 and '98 machines.

I tried to install the extenda and mine was rubbing on the tire, warped fender in my case,I'm not the only one who has had this problem. I had to remove the extenda. As I remember you do have a slight amount of adjustment with the fender bolts.
Pete in PA
If I remember right they're both a different OUTSIDE diameter so impossible to mix up. There is a little play in the fender if you loosen all 4 bolts. You might even elongate the holes and center it correctly.
Involute
Good idea. I'll check stuff out and If all the hard parts check out OK I'll see how much luck I have screwing around with the fender itself. Thank you.
Pete in PA
Well I've got the same issue. The rear/left side of my fender is closer to the tire than the other side. Never noticed it before. Kinda hidden in there next to the radiator and all. The front is nice and centered. I can see if you installed a fenda extenda that it would become more noticeable. At least Honda is consistant. I got it centered pretty good following your advise about loosening all 4 and influencing it.
