bar10dah
I bought my '98 XX in Dec '02 with 13K on the clock. I put 15K on it for the next eight months. So now we're at 25K in Aug '03. I rode my bike about a mile and stop at a friend's house. I notice fuel spilling out from underneath the bike. I took the bike to the local Honda shop for troubleshooting. The mechanic tore into the bike and called me to tell me I needed the carbs cleaned. While in there, I had him install my Factory jetkit. So carb cleaning, new gaskets, rejetting, and $430 later my bike ran beautifully! At least, for the next 6K and 15 months. Now we're at 31K and Nov '04 and my bike starts to run like crap. It seems to idle fine, but when I start to roll on the throttle, it makes a strange rumbling noise like it's missing. I keep rolling on and the bike starts to hesitate but slowly accelerates. I get into higher RPM's and the bike runs fine. I bring the bike home and pull the tank up. I see a small amount of fuel coming off the runoff from #3 and #4. Not much, but fuel nonetheless. I pull all four plugs and the first three look fine. #4 is black. Another carb problem?! Something else?! WTF!! http://www.speedextreme.com/keith/carbs.jpg http://www.speedextreme.com/keith/plugs.jpg
demon
You have a problem with the carb that sooted up the plug. If it were ignition, you'd have a pair of plugs messed up the way our coils work. Black = RICH so I would think your slide might be sticking a bit till the engine pulls enough air to open it up when it runs OK.
bar10dah
Just went for a 30 mile jaunt. Lots of throttle variations. From idling to ludicrous fast. The problem is gone! WTF?! So, if it's a stuck float do I run some carb cleaner such as Techron in there? Or is it beyond simple fix and I'll just have to get it cleaned and rebuilt? Fixable? Or time to trade her in for a new XX?
demon
I'd run a tank or two with some cleaner through her. Should be fine unless the problem persists then a complete rebuild probably won't be necessary. If it does it again, check the plugs again. If it's the same plug, you probably got a sticky float or slide in that particular carb. Shouldn't need a rebuild in 6K.
bar10dah
Is Techron the cleaner of choice? 4 out of 5 Blackbird owners agree?
Involute
I've never ran it in a bike before but from what I hear it is some of the best stuff out there thats readily available. I say go for it but you may want to get a second or third opinion.
Pete in PA
Yes, run the Techron through. If you buy the big bottle (treats like 18 gallons) you can it through 3 or 4 tankfulls. I love the stuff, run it through occasionally even without a problem and get better power and response.
demon
Techron is some good stuff. I'd run it through about 3 tankfulls and see if she acts up anymore.

v00d00child
SELL IT! Let's just stop the crazy talk... I'm far from an expert, but I've had to redo so many sets of carbs on my bikes, that I actually started to enjoy it. Not sure if stuck floatage is something that Techron will cure. Pete in PA
http://www.cbr1100xx.org/forum/viewtopic.p...highlight=float Here's some reading for ya. Mine stuck and then never again. :???:
The Krypt Keeper
Techron is some really good stuff, my personal favorite is 44K. I use to get bottles of it free from work $20 a pop but well worth it.
Red J
Techron is some really good stuff, my personal favorite is 44K. I use to get bottles of it free from work $20 a pop but well worth it. 2nd that, 44K is the best stuff out there no doubt about it. Techron is good, though. It's much more of a maintenance type of product, keeps it clean... Bar10dah, I'd start using Techron at every oil change, if I were you. Just run it thru once or twice before each oil change, keep the rest of the bottle in the garage for next time, or run it in the car. If you're having chronic problems like this, they may be avoidable with a $7-8 fix. One thing to remember, most fuel system cleaners are like prescription drugs, don't run them in more concentration than the bottle recommends. Most of this shit cleans off the carbon from valves, and you don't want big ass chunks of carbon, you want little bitty ones. J.
demon
I will run a tank with techron through mine once a year. I put the rest in the car. I don't have these problems with floats or anything cause FI is better :poke:
