  1. And what of those of us who have actually experienced the ill effects of using oil with the wrong additives. Are we just making this shit up? I'm not disputing the fact that many have used them with no problems. I'm just not one of them. All I'm saying is go ahead and roll the dice as long as you're prepared if it happens to come up craps. When my problems surfaced I was using Mobil 1. BTW as Mike pointed out, I'm not preaching not to use auto oils, just make sure you know what's in them.
  2. Not the best time of the year for traction is it? Add a good layer of wet leaves and it really makes for a fun ride. On top of that the deer are very active, and because of the lack of daylight you're in the dark most of the time. I've never tried the metzeler but I don't imagine it's much different from the pilot road in that respect. I'm pretty happy with the PR but I don't expect too much under those conditions. Try a softer compound for this time of year. I know the Battlax BT-012SS is awesome in the cold and wet, and heats up in an instant. Maybe drop a lb or two and see if they come up to temp a bit better. Hopefully someone with some specific experience with the Z6 will chime in. Until then, take it easy eh. marty
  3. Here's a pretty good article
  4. Yes it does Better actually. The photo doesn't do it justice at all. I've been thinking of doing it as well.
  5. "Friction Modifiers" are designed to reduce the amount of friction between moving parts in an engine. The clutch depends on friction to work. It's the foundation of its design. I was once too stupid to realise how foolish it was to use oil of that type. I'm now convinced it does cause slippage and possible damage to the clutch. I actually thought I had ruined my clutch, as it took a couple of oil changes to clear up completely. You may not notice it right away, but give it a few oil changes. The stuff imbeds itself in the clutch plates. If you're the kind of person who needs to find these things out themselves, fill your boots.

    18T front

That's the beauty of it. No. Same count.
  7. Wow, just saw this. :icon_shocked: Sorry JohnS but you're out to lunch, and so is your funny friend. To say that the charging system always operates at max and that excess current is shunted to ground is ludicrous. Voltage is provided by the charging system. Current is drawn by the load. No load=No current. eXXessive load (ie shorted/bad battery) = eXXessive current = eXXessive heat = toasted stator and/or RR.

    18T front

Haven't had it on long but so far, this is what I'm finding as well. 6th gear was more of an overdrive for me anyway and I would only use it mostly on the expressway. Haven't had it in the twisties yet but I was always in 3rd/4th going through them and I thought it was reving a tad too high most of the time. I'm hoping this will fix that up. The speedo and Tach don't change, but my actual speed is now closer to what the speedo says it is, instead of the 8% less for the speedo error. The gearspreadsheet is great. Just plug in 18 instead of 17 for the "front teeth" value and bob's your uncle.

Thanks for the help BTW. So far, I really like it. I do believe I'm another convert. I just have to watch my speeds now. I think the speedo error has saved my ass more than once. marty
  10. To me, the roads do feel a little heavy when compared to the AVs. I chose them because their wet weather performance is much better, IMO. Have you tried to shim up the shock? Could be the handling improvement you're looking for.
  11. My guess is that your stator and/or RR is gone. It's not designed to constantly charge a dead battery. You can determine a lot with a multimeter. Do a search as there is a lot of information here to help you with that. Good luck marty
  12. Replace it now, ask questions later. marty

    leaky clutch

Someone told me if you let the pads wear down too much on some bikes, the pistons will actually come out far enough to let some fluid escape. I've never seen it but have no reason to doubt him.
  15. Does anyone clean their OEM filter? I was stuck one night with a filter that look much like this one, and decided to try soaking it in varsol rather than putting it back and waiting till I could get a new one. Worked like a charm. marty
  16. There is no doubt that a bad battery will load down the stator and suck HP. You know I didn't think it was really worth posting at the time but I have noticed a slight difference in mileage dependant on the lighting. When I went from riding with the high-beam to just the low, and again when I switched to the HID. Electrical load will translate to a mechanical load, like riding with one of your brake callipers binding. If you had to crank the stator by hand and switched off/on 80 watts (roughly the difference between 2 HID verses 2 halogen bulbs), you would definitely notice the difference, almost to the point where you wouldn’t be able to continue cranking the latter, unless you’re N1K.
  17. I would think Torque rather than HP would be more of a determining factor for chain size, but what do I know? lol Keep us all posted for sure. I'm very interested in how it turns out. Me? I wouldn't fuck with it.
  18. Don't live in the desert but to me hotter temps usually mean heavier oil.
  19. Sorry, Can't help you there. On my bike it means the sidestand is down. Welcome to the forum anyway. Stick around after you get your response. Someone here will have an answer for you. marty
  20. Ya know, I always forget this step. They just pop out when I lift up the tank. I forget to move them out of the way when I'm re-installing too and usually end up unbolting the tank again.
  21. Also love the EBC pads. Got them from the Old Bike Barn as a matter of fact. Took forever but it was a great sale price. Should have ordered 3 more sets. I'm not sure if it applies to other pads but you have to be careful, as it's possible to fit the pin into the front pads without the notch properly in place.

    Will not idle

+1 That goes for me too. I think I'll print that off for future reference as well.
  23. What he said. lol ST.N does that. Maybe that's what you're thinking of
  24. Yea it gets up there pretty fricken quick in first and second. It catches me by surprise all the time cause who the hell is looking at the tach when you're WOT.
