  1. I tried searching to see if this has come up before, but don't see any posts that are related, so I'll start a new topic. If this has been discussed, could someone please post a link to the topic? Thanks.

I've noticed a bit of throttle hesitation when just slightly opening the throttle from whatever position it is in. For example, I'm cruising along at say 4500 RPM and want to wick it up just a tad. When I give it just a bit more throttle, the engine seems to hesitate, almost as if the ECU wasn't aware I'd opened the throttle more; I'm theorizing that the butterfly opens more from the throttle turn, but the FI system doesn't deliver more fuel. If I give it a larger turn, then the engine responds. I hope that description was at least slightly clear.

The bike has done this a little ever since new, but it is more noticable now that I have the Yoshimura cans on it.

Is this a known issue, just normal behavior, or ??? If it's normal, would a Power Commander clean it up?

    Thanks.

  2. My '99 ran great with my Yosh cans but they got very sooty. I never had it checked but judging by the smell and the exhaust tips the bike was running very rich.

So I just took the first longish ride with the Yoshimura cans (about 200 miles) and I don't detect much soot, and the guys behind me did not mention any gas smells. I got a little better than average gas mileage for this route (about 43MPG), but I usually get around 42, so the difference is not statistically significant, but if anything, it might be running a little lean. The engine temperature was no different from normal. I think I'll just go with it the way it is (meaning: no Power Commander) for now and keep an eye on the mileage and soot/no soot in the pipes.

The RS-3s sure sound nice, though. They aren't too loud, which is fine with me, but they do have a deeper, thoatier sound than the stockers. Overall, I'm a happy camper, especially since the only cost $300 on ebay (brand new, still in the plastic wrap).

  3. It'll run fine with the slip-ons & no PC, but your rideability will definitely be improved with the PC, especially in the midrange, and part throttle.

Your slip-ons, without a PC, will have a lot of carbon in them. With the PC & a good map, they'll be a nice dark brown color.

Thanks, Northman. I'll go ahead and install them and see how it goes for now.

  4. Is yours a California spec bird? If so then it has a oxygen sensor and might compensate at low speeds.

Yes, it's a California spec 'bird. I believe that if there's an oxygen sensor, the FI system should compensate, I just don't know if it has the sensor.

  5. OK, now that I have this nice set of Yoshimura RS-3 cans (ebay @ $300 :) ) for my 2003 'bird, do I need to do anything about the FI map, i.e. get a Power Commander, or will it be OK without? Is the 2003 'bird a close loop FI system? If it is, then it should be OK without modifying the FI map.

    Any inputs?

    Thanks.

  6. I tried both the VisionPlus and SilverStar bulbs in my Triumph Sprint over the four years I had and found that both were a big improvement over stock bulbs; the VisionPlus bulbs lasted about 18 months and the SilverStars were still in it when I traded it in on the 'bird. So, I want to upgrade the lighting on the 'bird with either of these. However, I can't find any indication of the bulb type for the bike; neither the Owners Manual nor the Haynes book list the specific bulb type, just that it's 12V/55W. Can someone on the list enlighten me? I'm sure it's probably not an H4, as that's a dual filiment bulb. Is it an H7?

    Thanks.

  7. I know this is an old thread (last post about a year ago) but I have a question about the fuel reserve, so thought I'd add to this rathter than start a new thread.

I have the digital guages ('03 'bird, only had it since late November) and I have noticed that the low fuel warning (blinking Empty mark on LCD guage) comes on at about 4.5 gallons. According to the specs, the tank on the 'bird is 6.3 gallons, so warning at 4.5 seems early to me. Is this about what others have observed? Is the tank 6.3 gallons (useable) in reality? If so, then I should have about 70 miles left in the tank, give or take.

That's another question: I'm consistently getting about 37 MPG; is that about right? Seems pretty bad, based on the nearly 50 MPG I always got from my Triumph Sprint RS (955cc). It doesn't seem that the 200cc size difference should make that big a mileage difference.

    Thanks.
