  1. Yeah was wrong about the adjusters......counter-clockwise is correct. Still the chained loosened. Took it to my mechanic. He said from once overtightening my axle (or twice), I was crushing the inner wheel spacer some and the axle wasn't locking all the way even though it was threading. He noticed how easy it was to loosen it after I torqued it to spec. He added a 2nd washer beneath the nut and this time it caught and tightened up right. The chain hasn't loosened at all after 100 miles or so. He said if it does, a new bearing and spacer will do the trick. But I'm good for now.

    Thanks.

  2. I honestly don't know how the adjusters could have moved if the bolts were tightened down. They are a physical barrier that, by their nature, would not allow the adjusters to move forward. Now I am confused... If I remember correctly I would torque them suckers down to about 25-30 lbs after locking down the nut. The bolts would have to sink into the swingarm for the adjusters to move forward.

PS. I would also search ebay or bikebandit.com and get a new axle shaft if it was stripped. Too much power to be dealing with marginal parts.

    http://www.bikebandit.com/houseofmotorcycl...151392#sch97126 shows a new axle for $65.

also http://www.bikebandit.com/houseofmotorcycl...51392#sch101123 shows the swingarm exploded view. You can see if the adjuster bolt is torqued down the adjuster can't possibly move forward. Once the axle is torqued down, tighten those bolts good and tight (~30lb-ft). Should have no other issues.

    Good luck!

I don't get it either. I will say this if after torqueing the axle I tighten the bolts down beyond hand tightening (turning clockwise)......my chain will loosen on the spot. And yes I meant torque'd to 69, not 60.

Thanks for the links for the axle. I just ordered a new one with new new nuts/washers. For $102 shipped, rather just replace the parts and go from there.

  3. Ok, I tightened my chain again. Torqued to 60lb, tightened fasteners by hand. Rode the bike 20 miles. Checked chain. Loose again. Chain side indicator mark moved some as a result. Other indicator did not. Both fasteners were still tight.

I do remember my mechanic saying my axle was stripped some once by me accidentally overtightening it (don't ask)....but it tightened up fine for me.

I don't know...I'm going to take the axle out and see if any stripped threads..etc. If so, I'll just order another one.

  4. I have Scorpion slip-ons and jet kit on my '98. Sound awesome and not annoying loud by any means. I don't know if they're still around but probably. Scorpions never need re-packing either. I wouldn't bother with a full system. Slip-ons will give you the sound you want and save you about 10lbs in weight. You'll be happy with probably any brand although Two Bros are louder than most and D&Ds are very loud.....too loud for me.

  5. Why such crappy milage out of the Birds?

I got around 42 out of my old FJR1300.

I guess it depends on your perspective. I ride the Bird pretty fast all the time. I'm always revving it up on backroads and I never cruise in say 6th at 65 or anything like that on the freeway. Speed limit in San Diego is 65-70 on the hwy and most are doing 75-80. So I can cruise at 85 on my Bird all day and rarely worry about getting pulled over. So with my riding style on a big bore powerful bike like the Bird, 36mpg to me is awesome.

If I rode an FJR, I personally doubt I'd see anything over 40mpg given the way I ride. I got 42mpg avg on my SV650 and V-strom 650.

  6. My '98 carbed XX is about the same on the guage.....normal. I never ride it too slow (it is a Blackbird after all) and average about 36mpg.

    The way I see it:

$3K bike + much faster and funner than 90% of anything on the road at any price + 36mpg on regular= :icon_love:

  7. Washers sound okay and correct by described placement. My thought and fear would be that the internal sleeve/bearing spacer was eliminated/forgotten during the tire change and wheel replacement. That would prevent an adjustment from holding and allow the wheel to slip forward under load. Easy to do in a rush too. I had this happen on my 900 about a decade or so ago. Shop called me in a panic the next day when the tech found the spacer lying beside the tire machine and knew I was the last one in the shop for a tire change the day before. :icon_whistle: No harm, no foul....shizzle happens.

I'll check that but pretty sure it's there. Without that spacer, I don't even think the axle nut would tighten.....or maybe it would.

To be clear, the adjusters need to be snugged outward (clockwise), not turned in. Turning them in will just make it worse.

Yup tightened them clockwise....but I'll double check. Just read that old post from Squareman with the chain. Classic stuff, Redbird!! And all still relevant.

  8. Thanks for the replies. I did snug down the adjusters afterward. I think that 2nd washer on the nut is causing the problem somehow.

Checked the indicators on both sides….both just before the 4th marker after I slightly tightend....it was far from too tight. After 18 mile ride to work, chain was considerably looser…bordering on floppy…..indicators were now just past the 3rd marker…..so they definitely moved.

  9. My chain keeps loosening up big time…right after I tighten it. Not the chain.....it's got maybe 5K miles on it and is lubed every 500. There's an extra washer the mech put on the rear axle nut like a year ago when I had a rear tire put on……..I forgot why. But that must have something to do with

it. I think I have 2 washers below the nut. Is there supposed to be a washer there at all? I can't remember.

    Thx.

  10. ok....thanks guys. I'll just ride it and see how it feels. Most of my commute is back roads....only about 5 mi freeway, so I rarely go over 140 :icon_silenced: j/k.

Kiwimack, my shop has told me that my Shinkos often require weights as they're not precision balanced from the factory like other tires. I don't have a balancer so I can't vouch.

  11. Cleaning off my bike yesterday and found 2 wheel weights practically hanging off front wheel. (Just had new Shinkos put on a few weeks ago at shop). Adhesive got loose so put some double-sided tape on them and put back on wheel. Added some black duct tape over for good measure. Did this to the stack of 5 weights on rear wheel which are still in good shape.

I'll go back to shop and have wheel balanced......eventually.

I'm thinking I probably had a couple more but they fell off while riding.

But was wondering how many weights you guys have on the front wheel typically........especially with Shinko's? Is it ok to ride it the way it is now.....I assuming I don't feel a high speed wobble coming?

  12. Asking price doesn't seem unreasonable to me- hope you find a serious buyer.

One question- on the list of mods, "Factory Pro shift star" caught my attention. Haven't seen this mentioned before as an XX change, always thought GSXR's needed them. Was it really beneficial, would you do it again?

Mmmm, probably not. I had just done it on my F4 trackbike which was getting false nuetrals and it didn't help at all in the end. The Bird shifts better than a stock one, but you'd have to be pretty farkle happy to do it. Install is kind of tricky too.

    Someone sent me this:

I didn't know you get scammed through paypal. I also don't see how this guy benefits from this?

They guy will probably paypal it linked to a credit card and then dispute the charge with the credit card company (not PayPal) and say it was unauthorized. I've heard of those disputes going on and taking awhile and the credit card company may be more lenient toward reversal then PayPal.

  13. I hope you have a real good purpose for that money. That XX is set up so great.....do you have another bike? If not, I don't think you can replace what you have for anything better......unless you're looking for something real comfy and upgright (Wing,Beemer..etc). If not, you may kick yourself for selling. I've already been through that. And nice low mileage XX's are not exactly running rampant.

I've bought my '98 4 1/2 years ago. I'm not making the mistake of selling this one. Selling an XX is often the result of temporary delirium (for the seller).

  14. I'd hate to tear it apart so I thought I would bump the ad to request feedback on interest and price.

    Thanks

It's a super nice bike and set up great. But to get $7K for a 12yr old XX........no matter how nicely set up, you're going to have to wait for that special buyer who truly wants all those add-ons (mainly the touring stuff) and is willing to pay for them. That's a much smaller pool than someone willing to pay $4500 for an XX with a few mods. I think it really comes down to how long you're willing to wait.

  15. Nice looking XX.

I put a lot of miles on my '04 Wing. Yes, it's a great bike but it's a far cry from an XX and it's missing a 6th gear (still 11yrs later!). XX's aren't worth squat. Keep it if you have room and get a Wing as its garage mate. I sold my Wing to get back an XX. But then again I don't tour or ride 2up ever.

  16. I figured many of us now have a C-14 or know someone who does so I'm posting this up here. Bought this a couple of months ago cleaned it up then got a deal on a Two Brother's set up. Offered here and on the Concours site. Please see my craigslist posting. Located in RI. Make an offer, it's collecting dust. http://providence.craigslist.org/mcy/2903372766.html

CL ad says it's for a ZX-14. Will this fit a C14 or ZX-14? I'm just wondering if you made a typo.

  17. That's awesome....I hadn't ridden my '98 in 3wks......fired her and up and dead as a doorknob! LOL......but really :icon_sad:

Hence my thread in this forum.....

Dude ur in SD and ur bikes been sitting 3 weeks..lol the weather hasnt been bad here...

I was away for 1 week. And had my V-strom at the time and was still in the honeymoon phase....riding it everyday.

New battery is all the Bird needed.
