  1. Well, shit. This is a better solution than the machined bearing cup, and it's going to cost me a lot of money. Thanks for nothing, Mike. :icon_biggrin:

Sorry!!! Maybe sell your triple on .com? :icon_twisted:

I got the RC51 upper for $25 on ebay... the 929/954 lower was about $175 though, I think (ebay also). The next project, which I might skip entirely, is roller bearings as opposed to the existing ball bearings I re-used from the 929 triple - they were in fine shape, though.

I've had a bunch of other projects that have snuck in front of this one, so I haven't done steering stops or tried out the key switch alignment yet. I swore that was going to be this week, but a TW200 refresh for a friend became more complex, as always. Maybe I can manage some time tomorrow morning.

That's as close to bolt-on as I think it's going to get - I would like to see an SP1 lower and how that fits with the steering stops before I make the lofty claim that the 929/954 lower triple is THE way to go. I wouldn't mind trying a 929/954 upper either, just to see how it looks. For now, I've invested enough in parts that are laying around the garage never to be used... the cost of "research".

I can probably get ~$200 for the ZX14 LSL top triple which means only an additional ~$350 for the RC51 LSL top triple. :icon_wall:

  2. Have I mentioned,,,,that I think an 2000 / 2001 Sp1 RCV 51 tree may be an exact replacement for the xx frame to zx14 fork using the same stock bearings and key? And all in all, may be cheaper new?

    Maybe I did,, :icon_twisted:

For those looking, it's the RVT1000R:

    Steering stem, part number 53219-MCF-D00

    - PartsFish: $328.39

    - Service Honda: $273.12

    Top bridge, part number 53300-MCF-670

    - PartsFish: $185.65

    - Service Honda: $170.59

The LSL kit is $500+ but I would only need the steering stem. I'll take a bath on the ZX14 LSL kit I already have, so I'm going to pursue the adaptor, but for anybody doing this in the future, the RVT triple clamp looks like the right solution.

  3. I'm still trying to come up with a satisfactory way to mount my gauges.

What about suspending them with a bracket from the windshield bolts? They would remain fixed and you could plump them fixed, as they would not need to rotate.

I've been rolling something like that around in the back of my head for awhile now, but it's not yet all come together.

  4. I like the looks of the ZX14, but I liked the looks of the Hayabusa from the start, too. The BMW S1000RR, on the other hand, has got to be the ugliest thing to assault my eyes since Rosie O'Donnell.

  5. Graham or Hank, any idea how the header on this kit compares configuration wise to that of the piece of crap hahn header.

I intended to build my own but yours looks pretty good.

It looks a lot like my EFR header.

  6. It was worth it in the sense that it cleaned up a mild steel header that was beginning to look pretty nasty and it did cut down on heat somewhat. But as a performance upgrade, not so much.

The most useful part of that was having the stock exhaust cans ceramic treated. I have them now, and I can actually brush up against them at temperature without injury or discomfort.

  7. While y'all have pioneered almost all of it, I can guarantee I'll have "issues". Knowing me, it will be on the simplest of things.

I take no credit. It was all Stan. It's easy to follow a trail blazed by The Master.

  8. Bracket? Adapter? For what? Just order the parts you don't have from PartsFish or wherever.

I'm using the XX swingarm and the ZX10 rear caliper. [snip]

Is there a better solution? Never too late to change...

Ah. I used the ZX14 swingarm, so I didn't have that problem. I had other problems. Ha.

  9. Almost all of my stuff came off the same '08 that the T-Rex company didn't need.

I used a C14 monoshock instead, but I may have to have it resprung because it's too stiff.

The dogbones need to be shorter than anything you can buy -- they're even shorter than using the adjustable ones from Brock Davidson tightened as short as they'll go.

In my opinion, the non-thrust bearing at the top of the neck is an insufficient solution. I found it difficult to gauge how tight the steering head should be, and I clearly estimated wrong because I already have a notched lower steering head bearing. I'm probably going to take Stan's dimensions for the upper bearing adapter and have one manufactured since he doesn't have the time.

I didn't use the stock ZX top triple clamp or bars, although they'll work. I used the LSL ZX kit with XX bar blocks (the ZX ones pulled back too far and touched the tank).

The ignition key assembly is problematic for me, but it seems to work with the stock top triple fairly well.

The chain is really long and finding the right number of teeth for a ZX sprocket took some extra effort. I'm still not convinced that a chain tensioner might not be a bad idea.

The ZX steering dampers won't work due to the tank.

  10. I own a Snap-On ratcheting screwdriver and it is easily the greatest Snap-On tool I've ever bought.

I completely agree. I liked mine so much I bought a second one for indoor jobs (computers, etc.). One of them is an engraved Bill Elliott signature model! (I guess it didn't sell all that well so they were discounted.)
