  1. On my 400EX I put 3- 2" holes in the air box and cut some of the crap out of the exhaust. This was on a stock bore machine. I ran a 170 main, 42 pilot and raised the needle one notch. I also removed the choke. It ran great!! I eventually put a WB slip on pipe but it didn't make as much difference as the jetting did.

BTW I used stock Honda jets not the dyno jet kit......much cheaper.

  2. This is another one of those things that is different for everybody. I get 2k-3k more out of a 46 tire than Speedygeezer does and we ride a lot of the same roads.

Two of the best choices of tires for the XX are the Avons and the Pilot Roads. Either of these will give decent mileage with a good amount of grip.

  3. You will need a synch tool ie. carb sticks, and some fittings for the vacuum ports. If you have had the carbs off for jetting they need to be done. The screws are PIA to get to and it takes a little time to get them just right.

  4. I haven't tried any of the higher end screens but out of the four aftermarket ones I've used the stock one is still my favourite.

The taller screens can cause some buffeting and also take some of the wind off your upper body which in turn puts more weight on your wrists.

  5. He's OK or at least he has internet cuz I got an e-mail from him earlier today. Quite a few outages in the rural areas. The ice storm in 02 cleared out most of the trees around here so I think that helped this time. Supposed to be in the 60s by sunday!!!

  6. Power delivery is excellent, in fact the fuelies may seem a little vague compared to carbs. There may be a slight dip around 5000-5500rpm but its not a real problem and can be jetted out. Carbed XX's usually get better fuel mileage. The choke is no big deal either and can be shut off after less than a minute of warm up.

As far as other changes, they are minor and make little difference in the day to day operation.

Hope this goes better for ya than the last time around :poke:

  7. As long as you use it often it will probably work OK. But it will also suck the grease out of your chain. WD40 liquifies grease thats why it works so good to clean.

I have used Bel Ray superclean chain lube with good results. Doesn't fly off or attract dirt.

  8. The Dunlops have good grip but don't last too long. The front will start to cup after a couple thousand miles and the back will square off quickly. Expect your mileage with them to be between 3k and 6k if you take it easy.

Avon 45/46 combo is popular as well as the Michelin Roads.

  9. I had a slight wobble on decel when I put the Avons on. Also had some funny sensations thru the bars and a vibration. I balanced the tire to no avail. Finally the light bulb came on to check the roundness of the front tire....it was out of round. It would balance fine but it had a section 6"-8" long that was 2-4mm off from the rest of the tire. After another new "round" Avon I have no problems now.
