  1. I have a 99 Blackbird seat that has been cut down about 1 " and recovered in non-slip black. There aren't any rips or marks on the seat. It's softer than the stock seat and still supportive. It helps shorter riders without the need to lower the bike. I'm asking $50 plus shipping. If interested PM me.

    Thanks

  4. SOLD

I'm selling my 99 Blackbird. It has a custom paint job with a light kit under the fenders and around the engine. There is also a Blackbird stencil on the chrome windscreen. The bike has 32,000 miles on it. I've recently replaced the stator, R/R, Battery, Sprockets, Chain, Tires, CCT, Micron Exhaust, brakes, and fresh oil change. Bike is garage kept and never raced or abused. Bike looks and runs 100% I'm asking $3800.00 If interested or want more information, let me know. Thanks.

  5. Where exactly do I put the feeler gauge to check this clearance? I'm new to this. Thanks

There are two 12mm head pinch bolts on the bottom of each fork leg that have to be loosened before the axle can be removed.

When you are retightening the wheel, the bottom of the forks have a little bit of in and out adjustment, and that is what the feeler gauge is for in your tool kit...to adjust the clearance correctly. Lightly tighten the pinch bolts, and check your clearance before torquing them up.

  6. I'm getting ready to remove the wheels from my bike to put new tires on. In the owner's manual it describes loosening the left and right pinch bolts on the front fork before loosening the axle bolt. It says after reinstalling the wheel, check the caliper holding bolt to disc clearance. If this is not .7 mm, the pinch bolts should be loosened and the forks moved in or out to gain proper clearance. Can someone explain this process to me. I thought that I could just remove one caliper and remove the axle bolt, and I was good to go. Not clear about this whole pinch bolt/clearance issue. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

  7. post-7268-1215621002.jpgI have too many toys, so the Blackbird must go. I am the second owner. It's a 99 with a custom air-brushed paint job. There is a blackbird stencil on the chrome windscreen. The eyes in the skulls light up. There is a full light kit on the bike as well. The bike has 30,000 miles on it. Never raced or abused, and garage kept. It has new stator, Regulator, Battery, Sprockets, Chain, Tires, Exhaust, and fresh oil change. Bike looks and runs 100%. Never been down. I'm asking $4400/BO. Please email me at ninja.655@hotmail.com if interested.
  8. I noticed while 2-up riding the other day that my turn signals weren't working. I brought bike home and noticed the following issues: my running lamps in the mirrors were on while bike was running and when I pushed the turn signal button to the left, the left mirror running lamp went off. When I canceled the turn signal, the lamp came back on. Does the same thing on the right side. Meanwhile, neither turn light in the rear comes on at all. Earlier that day they started working fine, but then just quit. I looked at the connectors in the back by the computer and all looked ok. I also noticed that my front brake lever activates my rear brake light, but the rear brake pedal does not activate the rear brake light now. Not sure if they are related issues. Any ideas on things I can check like voltage or specific wires.

    Thanks

Update: found that when I wiggled the wire loom block that I recently cleaned, the turn signal lights and the rear brake light worked again. I'm going to see if I can put a clamp on the wires to hold them in place. If not, I'll have to find someone who does soldering work. Hint: if there is anyone close to me who can help with this, I'd appreciate it. Just send me a PM.

    Thanks for all the help.

  10. This is my final update to my 99 got towed saga. I finally got my parts and installed the R/R, Stator, and New Battery today, along with a thorough cleaning of the wire loom. The battery was reading 12.9 volts before starting the bike up. After starting and idling, the volts held steady at 12.5. As soon as I revved the bike to 1500 rpms and up, the volts increased to 14.7. I'm ecstatic. It's running much smoother now. I want to thank everyone for their help. And a special thanks to Rich for his wonderful pictures and to Donald for his extensive knowledge of these bikes.

    Thanks again

  11. The battery I had in for a year or so died about a month ago so I replaced it. Shortly after the new battery went dead so I did some tests on the stator and all checked out fine so I ordered an R1 rectifier and installed it. Everything worked fine for a couple of weeks and then the battery went down to nothing. I was lucky to get it home before the bike died. I disonnected all xtra accessory hook ups, installed a voltmeter and have been riding the bike for a couple of days with some strange readings on the meter. On the way to work today the voltage went over 15 volts. Shut the bike down at work and the voltage dropped to low 13's. Started the bike and it immediately went back to 14 at idle. I decided to ride the bike after work and put a load on the electrical system so I connected my gerbings heated gear, cranked it up and went for a ride. Everything seemed fine (meter reading 13.9-14 volts @ 4000 rpm) with the gear cranked all the way for about 15-20 miles. Glanced at the meter and all the sudden it was just reading 12.5 volts and dropping. Turned the heated gear off while riding and the meter didn't move, except for down. Then every once in a while it would jump to 13.8 or so and then back to mid 12's and dropping. So... What do you all think. Corroded connections, rectifier, missed something with the stator. I'm confused.

What year is your bike? I have a 99 that I had to replace the battery. stator, and R/R because the wire loom was corroded and caused high resistance.

  12. I was reading the symptoms of a bad wire loom and it seems to mainly cause FI light issues. I have a R/R and Stator on order for my 99, since the battery is only reading 12.4 volts while increasing the rpms and then the volts start dropping down. Has anyone had any charging issues related to the wire loom? I'm hoping that replacing the 2 above items will remedy my charging issue.

    Thanks

  13. I took the bike out Friday for a nice relaxing ride. I stopped to get a bite to eat. When I came out to start the bike, it started kinda slow. Rode about 1 mile down the road and noticed that the tach read 0 at stoplights. Once moving it came back up again. Then the speedo started reading erratic. I tried to get the bike home, but it died at the next light in traffic. I duck walked it across 2 lanes of traffic into a parking lot and called the tow company. Once I got the bike home, I checked battery voltage and it read 11.4. The headlight would come on, but nothing when I tried to start it up. I'm not sure the age of the battery since I'm the second owner. I'm gonna replace the battery and R/R. The bike is a 99 with 29500 miles on it. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Also, what is involved in replacing the stator? The R/R looks pretty easy. I think.

    Thanks

Update: I tried to recharge the battery on a tender, but it wouldn't charge up. I'm going to replace the battery and replace the R/R for good measures. Hopefully, this will get me up and running. Once running I'll check the voltage and make sure all is well.

Update: I have the R/R and Stator on order. I pulled the stator off last night and it had exposed copper wires in the same location as Rich's pictorial. I'm still going to replace the R/R with a new one. I decided to check the Wire Loom block today and when I cut open the electrical tape, a bunch of corrosion came out. I'm thinking that caused my electrical system to crap out. I'm gonna clean it up and install the new parts when they arrive. I'll post a final report when done.

  14. I want to thank everyone for their help and advice. I guess I'm lucky. I only had to remove the windscreen, right handlebar clip-on and right inner dash panel. The plug for the switch was easy to reach and the throttle cables came off after a little struggling and maneuvering of the clip-on. I'm waiting on my new switch to come in now. Hopefully things will go back together smoothly. Thanks again

  15. If I barely touch my stop switch while the bike is running it cuts off. Then it will start up right away again. I want to replace this switch with a new one. Can anyone tell me the steps to r&r the switch? Any pictures would be helpful.

    Thanks

  16. I currently have a Sportech Chrome windscreen on my 99 bird. I would like to change to a different style. Can you give me your thoughts on windscreens and what are the steps to removing and replacing the windscreen on these bikes?

    Thanks
