  1. This is my first summer with the bike and am wondering if any of you living in hot climates have your tank and frame right below the tank get very hot? My tank gets hot, but I can still put my hand on it, however the frame gets so hot that I can't touch it for more than a few seconds. Is this normal? The temp gage during our summer heat stays between 195 and 223, so its not overheating.

  2. Go find a radar trailer somewhere.

Are those things accurate enough? I dunno, most of the time when I pass by them, they don't read what my speedo or my GPS say.

I can't say for sure, however every one I have always gone by seems to be consistent. I know sometimes they get confused if more than 1 vehicle is going by at once (two lanes of traffic).

  3. I set mine for 7%. I wish I had gps to check it. What do you have yours at ?

Go find a radar trailer somewhere. That is what I did. The plug is under the tank more to the right center on top of the tranny. I believe it is under the black boot.

With one tooth down in front, I had a 15% error.

  4. Don't mean to be a trouble maker but when you buy a brand new bike, Honda contacts you by the end of the first year to extend the warranty for 600 bucks (direct from them).

I think you are just trying to be a trouble maker.

I don't advocate purchasing from them, just wanted to post for completeness. Didn' know Honda will contact new owners. I ended up purchasing it for $350 from a dealer listed above.

  5. Just posting this for completeness. Still getting back some replies and want to post for comparison if others are looking in the future.

  6. Dave,

I'm assuming u have an '02 bird (me too). What arguments did u use to convince yourself the HPP was a good value, or r u just looking at it as an insurance to ensure fixed costs for that potential type of part failure? If was anything other than a Honda it would be a no brainer.

    Bruce,

In my case, it seems to me that $87.5 per year for a warranty is cheap insurance just "in case" their is a problem. Based on all I know about the bird, I don't expect a problem. I do plan on piling on some miles over the next couple of years, so it seems like a logical thing to do. Also, I don't plan on selling the bike, however if I should decide to sell (read new CBRXX in future), I believe it may offer the prospective purchaser some peace of mind.

  7. I just ordered the 4 year HPP from Alan Landes at Blue Ridge Powersports. The $350 did include tax. If interested, their number is 1-800-296-2735. He mentioned that if anybody else is interested, he would appreciate them calling by the end of this week. I think it is a sales quota type thing. I am not sure if he will be able to do the $350 after that, but if you want the plan you might try giving him a call.

Remember that the extended HPP is only good if your bike is still under the original warranty.

  8. Any chance on getting an extended warranty on a 1997 XX with 11,000 miles. It was recently purchased used at a local Honda dealer.

    Thanks in advance.

I don't know about third party warranties, but the HPP is only good if purchased while your machine is still under the original warranty. See the section labeled "Deadline" at the link above I posted.

Alan just called me and says he will sell the 4 year extended warranty to members of the forum for $350 by calling him individually, no need for group rate. it has to be done in the next couple of days so he gets it in on this month's quota. i told him i would post it on the forum.

Someone said earlier that the R/R changed on the '02/'03 models and i checked www.ronayers.com and there is in fact a new model # replacing an older one. does anyone know the track record of the newer R/R and is it less prone to failure. that would be replaced on warranty, right?

At the rate i racking on the miles, i will be approching 60k after 5 years, $350 for extended oem coverage is getting very tempting.

That's interesting. When I talked to him the previous week, it was still $395. I guess as it get near the end of the month, they get desparate for sales. Thursday right before I left for work, and a long weekend, the Honda of Russelville dealer called me and offered it to me for $387 which includes tax.

Is that $350 include tax? I am going to purchase tomorrow.

  10. I am interested in this idea too. Has anyone tried one the the newer PDA's for GPS navigation on their Birds? They would cost about the same as the Garmin V unit ($500.00) Currently I am using a separate MP3 player and a friends GPS receiver. I would love the idea of an all-in-one system. The additional benefits of the Pocet PC OS alone would be cool.

    Anyone tried this? Anyone?

Ps. I don't care about it being waterproof (sun only for me and the Bird).

I'm in the process of trying this right now. I recently purchased a Sharp Zaurus 5500 (linux based PDA) and also purchased the Holux compact flash GPS receiver ultra. I haven't had time to try it out yet and the Linux based GPS software is a little more limited and rare. Once I get everything figured out, I will report back. My guess is with a Windows based PDA this process would be straight forward and work okay. I expect this to work pretty well on mine once it is figured out. I also want to plays MP3s very well. I like the idea of being able to store the MP3s on SD or MMC cards and using the compact flash GPS.

  11. flk,

thanks for doing the research. now that i know the price, i will think on it asap and get back at ya. where is the best place to go to get details on the coverage? i read it once when i bought the bike, but have forgotten all the details.

    http://www.hondamotorcycle.com/the_goods/h...es+%26+Scooters

    for info on the HPP.

Also, it was me that did the research. Since there are only 4 of us now, it doesn't look like we will be able to get the additional $20 off. So unless somebody else speaks up soon and wants to make it 5, the rest of us should feel free to call one of the contacts above and purchase the 4 year HPP.

  12. Just changed the oil in the bird, Mobile 1 synth 15-50 4.89$/qt. wal-mart didn't have the 5 qt. container, but as far as oil filters i paid 10$ for the oem honda filter is there a better filter and if so are they cost effective?

The drain plug washer looked new so I replaced it anyways 50 cents for new one.

What the rest said about filters are all good ideas. I use the OEM, and just purchase several at a time from Ron Ayers for $ 7.5 each. To get the best bang for shipping, you can order up to about $75 worth of merchandise for the $7 shipping charge. So I take the opportunity to order some extra bolts, nuts and fastners.

  13. I called and talked to the three individuals that emailed me and here is what I got.

Honda of Russellville - Contact Roger Shatwell - 479-968-2233

    4 year HPP = $385 + 7.62% tax = $414.35

    no discount for us

Directline parts Inc. - Contact Jon - 800-785-6761

    4 Year HPP = $440 no tax

    no discount for us

BlueRidge Powersports - Contact Alan Landes - 800-296-2735

    4 Year HPP = $395 no tax

Discounted price if we can get 5 or more to buy at the same time - $375

It looks like BlueRidge is the best deal even if we don't get the discount.

From looking through the thread, it looks like there are 5 of us.

FLK, Chester, FloridaXXbird, Bhanxx, and myself. So if all of you or anybody else are definitely interested, we should try and coordinate to call next week with credit card in hand. I mentioned we would identify ourselves as members of the CBR1100xx owner's org.

Are the 4 of you or anybody else ready to buy? If so, I would like to coordinate so we can call on Monday or Tuesday.

I believe we will need our VIN number, current mileage, and should know when our original warranty runs out.

    2nd email reply

Honda offers extended warranty from 1 to 4 years.

Honda's price is $627 for the 4 year.

I can let you have the 4 year warranty for $395.

We take credit cards over the phone or you can send a check, which ever is

    easier.

If I can help in any way, please let me know.

They are pretty close for the cost of the 4 year warranty. I am going to try and call a few of the other dealers that didn't respond yet and will post any results. I am also going to ask about any type of volume discount we might get. Including myself, it appears that there might be 3 of us interested. When I talk to them, I will see what kind of discount we can get with 3, 5, and 10 unit purchases for the 48 month. Will update Thursday night.

  15. Let us know. Mine is about to run out to, but $400.00 for four years sounds good to me.

    Chad

I will. If anybody else is interested, leave a message here. If there is any chance of getting a volume discount based on the number of members interested, I will attempt to get a better price. I am going to give my email inquiries till Wednesday and see what I have by them. I may also try calling a few dealers.

  16. I'm currently looking at getting the extended protection plan also. I have emailed several dealers to request quotes for the Honda Protection Plan. I will give everyone a few more days to respond and will report back what I find. So far the best price I got was $395 for the 4 year extension.

  17. I already had tried that. I think the issue is with our DNS service on campus and that the changes didn't propogate to our servers yet. Joe has been PMing me and that is what he thinks. I will see what happens tomorrow. I tried it from two machines that never access the site before and the do it, so that leaves me to believe it is the campus DNS servers.
