Thanks for the replies. I'm off to AutoZone!

Is Techron the cleaner of choice? 4 out of 5 Blackbird owners agree?
-
Just went for a 30 mile jaunt. Lots of throttle variations. From idling to ludicrous fast. The problem is gone! WTF?!
So, if it's a stuck float do I run some carb cleaner such as Techron in there? Or is it beyond simple fix and I'll just have to get it cleaned and rebuilt?
Fixable? Or time to trade her in for a new XX?

I bought my '98 XX in Dec '02 with 13K on the clock. I put 15K on it for
the next eight months.
So now we're at 25K in Aug '03. I rode my bike about a mile and stop at a
friend's house. I notice fuel spilling out from underneath the bike. I
took the bike to the local Honda shop for troubleshooting. The mechanic
tore into the bike and called me to tell me I needed the carbs cleaned.
While in there, I had him install my Factory jetkit.
So carb cleaning, new gaskets, rejetting, and $430 later my bike ran
beautifully! At least, for the next 6K and 15 months.
Now we're at 31K and Nov '04 and my bike starts to run like crap. It seems
to idle fine, but when I start to roll on the throttle, it makes a strange
rumbling noise like it's missing. I keep rolling on and the bike starts to
hesitate but slowly accelerates. I get into higher RPM's and the bike runs
fine.
I bring the bike home and pull the tank up. I see a small amount of fuel
coming off the runoff from #3 and #4. Not much, but fuel nonetheless. I
pull all four plugs and the first three look fine. #4 is black.
Another carb problem?! Something else?! WTF!!

I can't seem to get more than 4,000 miles out of the rear tire.
Sheesh! I get twice that on my AV46. I'm on my third rear.

Avon AV45/46. Love them.

Wohoo! Found it!!

I thought Joe had something on his site, but I didn't see it. Perhaps it was someone else's site? I'll have to start sifting through my post subscriptions...

:???: I get the idea, but that was tough to read!

I can't find them with search! Too many damned hits!
-
Just to start. Many others out there to choose from.

Alot of guys will say screw checking the vavles on a XX until after 40,000 miles
Really? That long? I was going to do it at 32K miles. Has anyone had valves way out of tolerance at this mileage?

NEP's got my vote.

Not just gold. I have a DID 530ZVM that's silver. Or was it black? I don't recall. It's dirty now. But I do remember that it wasn't gold.

I went through a similar experience with a chain and sprocket I ordered. If I recall correctly, Starcycle finally had it on my doorstep over two weeks from the original promised date.

Dude!! Do you ever RIDE this bike?! Even the tires are clean! Stop changing things and just RIDE!!
-
shit, how do you make the 'fuck off' emoticon?
Will this do?
-
Did you ever find the answers to your questions?
-
I just installed the EBC's WITH the shims, and didn't have any clearance problems.
-
I never said it was "dead on at any speed" I said it was reading 6 or 7mph fast consistently, and that is exactly what it does at 60mph.
 When you said "consistently" I thought you meant at any and all speeds. It just didn't make sense, and I was trying to clarify.
-
I didn't check it at 10mph, I usually ride a little faster that that. Yes, speedo reading 66mph, actual speed 60. According to my gps. Make sense now?
well yeah, that makes sense. But if you're reading 66 and actual is 60, then at actual 10 you're only going 11. It's not a dead on 6 or 7 higher at any speed, it's a percentage...
-
I recently checked my speedo for accuracy with my gps. Speedo was reading 6 or 7 mph fast, consistently. Ron
That just doesn't make sense. If you were going actual 10 you'd read 16 or 17? And if you were going actual 60 you'd read 66 or 67? Does... not... compute...
-
Yeah, but what about a '98 WITH iridium plugs?
-
Whoa! I don't have to change my plugs for 32K?! That's awesome!!
killed the battery
in The Garage
Posted
So, it's been beautiful riding weather around here lately and I've been riding my bike a lot. Today, I went to an appointment at about 2pm. At a quarter to 4pm, I click the starter on my bike and it spins a couple of times and stops. WTF?! Hit it again twice more. Damn, battery croaked! Pulled back out of the space, straightened her up, powerwalked the bike and popped the clutch. Bike fires right up! Damn, it doesn't take much speed at all to get her running!
Rider her home, all the while the gauges are jumping. Speedo jumping from actual speed to 0 and back. And tach going from RPM's to 0 and back. Kept the RPM's up the whole way home. Pulled into the garage and let her idle. Idled fine. Hit the kill switch and then tried to restart her. No deal.
Time for a new battery! This looks like a good deal. http://motorcyclebatteriesusa.com/battery-...asp?battery=754
Since I'll have her apart for a few days, thought I'd pull the tank and finally replace the sending unit. My fuel gauge works, but the low fuel light doesn't. Followed the troubleshooting guide in the service manual and it says the sending unit is faulty.
When I had the tank apart, I pulled the petcock off. There's a mesh screen in there! I couldn't get it out, though. Didn't want to pull on it too hard, but it's fitted up into the tank. Guess I'll just leave it there and reinstall the petcock. So, I guess this bike has a nonreplaceable fuel filter? At least, one that keeps debris in the tank from going into the carbs. Good to know.
Guess I'll just do all it's other maintenance while I'm at it. Partsmonster guy! If you're reading this, I already emailed Leslie Lehman for some parts quotes. Will you add 4 iridium plugs to that order, please? I believe the part numbers for them are CR9EHVX-9.
Also need to do a coolant change and clutch/brake fluid change.
Gonna be a fun couple of weekends! Glad I finally have a garage to work in.
