I have never heard of that before.

Well my California 97 XX would do an indicated 175, and i know the speedo was not off that much.

Also check to see that the vent and overflow hoses are not reversed at the radiator neck. Mine came back from a dealer service like that and it took me awhile to figure it out.

If you have not done so already, replace the spark plugs and the wires because they do break down over time. Also make sure the intake hose is fully seated at both ends.

Give the fuel injectors a good flush clean along with the intake and Trottle body.

The 97_98 rear shock had more firm damping set up than the later ones, but they will bolt on.

[Advice needed - overheating problem]

When i had my XX serviced one time, the dealer mechanic reversed the overflow hose and the vent hose. They are both the same size right under the radiator cap. It would burp out coolant whenever i shut off the motor. You might double check those hoses.

If your brake pedal feels like it travels down after initial stop, the master cylinder might be bypassing internally.

IF the pedal stays up then you have air in the system.

I too, on a few occasions, have had to log in for the site to recognize me. Not a big deal, just minor inconvience.

[97 wont turn over]

When you get ready to restart your Bird, you should remove the fuses for the lights.

Then once you have it running on just the ign. current, check your battery voltage

to see if it is higher than just 12.5 v

It should be more like 13.5 v plus. If not you might have a lack of charging voltage.

Should that be the case you may have regulator/rectifier problem.

If charging OK, just keep the batt charged.

[50,000 mile maintenance]

Absolutely do all of the above recomended items. 50,000 miles is quite a lot of wear and tear.

Even though the bike still seems ok, you must do all the maintenance or you could be looking

at a nasty failure of some part, possibly at a very bad time in a remote place!!
