  1. I've had Yausas go bad while sitting on a Battery tender in the garage.

Now I check my local Interstate Battery store before plopping down more $.

I'm thinking all these batteries come down the same assembly line in China and get different labels slapped on.

idling the bike for 15-20 minutes once a month is easier than "winterizing" it for storage.

Idling doesn't generate enough juice to charge the battery.

  2. Honda bar ends screw into a fixture inside the bar. I took the fixture (what else would you call it?) out of the stock bars and put them in the Heli's.

Heli's made for the Honda will have the indexing holes made for the thingys.

Then I found some anodized aluminum bar ends on E-bay for $15 that color matched. The bird doesn't need the anti vibe weights.

Look inside the bar. Is there a nut inside? The trick is removing it. Screw a long bolt into it, then while using two small screwdrivers to depress the tabs, pull out the unit. You really need three hands, but I managed to do it with minimal cursing.

  3. The shifter can be moved to a different position. Easy.

The brake can be moved down also, but then the brake light will come on when you don't want it on.

Take the cotter pin out of the brake clevis and spin the shaft all the way up. You may want to cut 1/4" off the rod with a Dremmel. I did.

Then locate the brake switch (above the brake pedal) and spin the adjusting knob all the way up against the switch body.

This will prevent the light from coming on just because you lowered the pedal.

Easy, enjoy. (You needed a Dremmel anyway, didn't you?)

  4. BMW now has the K1300 GT with the inline four, and coming soon the K1600 GT with an inline six. (That is almost the same width as the four)

The GT is better looking than the K 1300 S and isn't as slab sided as the K 1200 GT.

Beemers have really stepped up in the touring bike, and mega power bike segments.

  5. I read before I think it was on the English Blackbird site that the hangers or maybe their mounting points can bend down causing that.

I could see that happening if you carried a passenger since they would mount from the left side. (stop)

But mine is stock, never had a passenger, and the left pipe is still closer than the right.

The tire seems centered in the swingarm so I don't think it's because the chain is on that side.

I think Honda made it that way. Shifter clearance on the pipe? Engine not symmetrical?

  6. I looked at mine and the clearance on the left side is less that the right. (stock pipes, no passenger, low miles) Mine don't touch, but it's close.

I have no idea why the pipes shouldn't clear the same on both sides.

I thought about a spacer on the canister bracket on the left.

    But why?

  7. How old is it?

Water heaters are cheap and easy to replace.

Hot and cold in the top, easy electrical panel hookup.

In my area, the water heater fills up with calcium (I think). It looks like gravel in the bottom.

Of course, you're supposed to flush them out every so often, but who does?

  8. my bike regularly sees 210-219 on my work commute and it's 40-50 degrees out. I believe it was in the 220's when I was commuting around LA when I bought it

Also remember that the bird doesn't pump enough water to cool the engine if you are below 4000 rpm. At stoplights, the temp soars. Kick it up to 4 K in traffic and it helps.

  9. It's simple the higher up you are the less Oxygen in the air, the bike puts less fuel in because there is less Oxygen. Gives you better MPG but less HP. For example on a dyno at sea level your XX makes 130HP. If you dyno your bike at 5000 feet you'd get about 20HP less. Most dyno's correct the HP reading to sea level BUT doesn't change that your bike made 20 less HP. Since you make less HP you need less fuel to make it.

    But..............

Let's say at sea level it takes 30 hp. to maintain 60 mph level.

So now you go to 10,000' you make less hp. Right? So you can't maintain 60 mph. (at a given throttle setting)

The answer is to twist the throttle to add more fuel/air to get back to 30 hp. & 60 mph.

So shouldn't you get the same mileage as at sea level?

I'm missing something. And I think it's the density of the air, not the volume.

I actually think the bike F/I, runs better at altitude, sounds smoother, happier.

    I know it's nuts.

As far as temp. My fan doesn't even kick on until 219 F.

  10. Yep that's it, just move to Colorado and you'll magically get better gas mileage. :icon_duh:

All my bikes get better MPG in Colorado. I can't explain it. Even with F/I.

So less air would make the bike get less fuel, but then you just twist the throttle a bit more so you should be back where you started.

But it doesn't work that way. Less moisture in the air?

My H/D gets 50 mpg when in Co.

  11. Harbor Freight Chock

    $ 79.99 now (regular price)

runs on sale for 59.99 about once a month plus I get 15% off coupons every other weekend

Have seven of these, two in my truck and three on a trailer and two in the garage.

Hold the bikes well but for safety sake still use a couple tie downs on the trailer and truck.

They don't have the tire grabby thing on the bottom. Maybe okay to get off the bike before you tie it down.

Hell, I'd use tie downs on both of 'em.

  12. When I replaced the battery in the bird, the specs called for a YTZ12S.

However, the YTZ14S is exactly the same size (I put them side by side) and offers a bit more juice.

I believe it is for the ST 1300.

There was a whole can of worms over "Will the extra amperage damage anything?" and the answer is: No.

    It draws what it needs.

  13. Do you keep it on a Battery Tender?

2 1/2 yrs. may not be so bad.

I tried a Interstate Battery brand, but it was no better, and barely cheaper.

Sadly, motorcycle batteries have a tough life, small, hot, lots of vibration, long periods of unuse.

I recently bought another battery for the H/D at the H/D dealer because it was the same price as the Interstate.

Yuasa seems to be the standard, although that's nothing to write home about.
