  1. I am in Puerto Rico and my 99xx runs hot too like the rest of you all, mostly in stop and go traffic. The needle stays near the top of the operating range until you run it down the highway. After 65mph its always comes to our below the halfway mark. At a steady 100mph or more its at the 1/4 mark. I took of the radiator a while back and spent hours straightening the cooling fins one by one(mostly the center ones get tweaked) and this did not seem to make a change in the stopped in traffic, and hot sun situation. Reads high but seems unaffected. Sucks that all the heat blows on you and heats up your nut sack to dangerous levels. I am happy to report that we can split traffic and get to the front of every light. California has this provision also for this very real issue of bikes and balls getting hot, especially bikes with no water. In California I believe you can only split traffic if it is moving at 10mph or less and then can not go more then 10mph above their speed. Here in PR we split at any speed which is to me better than a no helmet law. For instance Texas has a no helmet law but when I tried to split traffic on a stopped up freeway people started freaking out. Just putting past them at a couple mph, some would swerve in front or open doors and shit while they are sitting cool and comfy in their air conditioned cars with several feet between them. If I continued I may have gotten shot with all the guns they have over there. Anyway, the XX always runs hot till you do what is made to do, and that is the bottom line...Keep going!!!

  2. My headlight went out also not long ago. The turn signals were also affected. I added a wire to the green lead the goes to the low beam and attached it to the fairing stay. Solved both the headlight problem and the signals. I must have had a poor ground somewhere.

  3. How many miles does one typically get before these charging issues start cropping up? And what year or years are more susceptible to this problem? I have 25,000 miles on my 99XX. On the third battery. Charging is real strong. Battery maintains 12.7 with the key off. Start it up and it sticks around 14.3 volts or so. The first 2 batteries were ruined by sitting unused for months at a time.

  4. The "shock mount" he refers to is the triagular plates that connect the shock to the linkage. Rotating those in the appropriate direction will drop the rear. What other effect it might have on the rear suspension I couldn't tell you.
Thanks Redbird. I get it now.
  5. How low you trying to go? If you only need a inche or inche and a 1/4 you can use the shock mount to lower it. Turn the mount one hole to the right and it will lower the bike. Not sure honda intended this, but it works. So why the clip in the front axle :icon_whistle:

You lost me. I want to lower the 1 to 1 and a 1/4 as you talked about. Turn the shock mount one hole to the right. Do you have a picture you can send. Doesn't seem I have that option. (99XX)

  6. Anybody ever have a lowering link break? I was riding down the highway when all of a sudden by bike dropped to the ground. Luckily nothing seriously happened. I bought the link off Ebay from D2Moto any they say their links are made from 6061 T6 Aluminum.

I just bought the same link for safety purposes. Can't quite put both feet down flat. I have several questions to ask you.I am about to install it. Would you give me a call at 787-646-2106 or give me your # and I will call you. One question is how much of a drop did you get with the first hole installation your picture shows? The link comes with 0 instructions. Can either hole be used? Did you carefully grease, transfer the needle bearings, and torque the link to the factory specs? I saw some info about other links made of 7071 for additional stiffness. The weird thing is 6061 is softer and should bend ,not break. Help!!!

  7. The shop manual suggests the special cam tensioner stop tool. Haynes says nothing about it. Anybody out there that does there own valve adjustments please clue me in!!! This will be my first at 24,000miles...Thanks (99XX)

  8. I have a '99 with a D&D single can and a K&N airfilter. They came with the bike when I got it. I also got both stock mufflers and the header with the bike. I've wondered what I am missing by not having a PC or other such thing. I like the performance just fine but have that nagging suspicion that it is not all it could be. I'm not trying to set a land speed record or the best 1/4 mile time, this is my daily commuter after all, but am I getting the most of the K&N and D&D? Hell, could I get better gas mileage? Not that that is all that crucial, but what if?

What the hell am I worried about? I live and work in Houston, my number one concern right now is the temp gauge! I know I'm ok as long is it doesn't get past the white line on top but damn I hate seeing the needle live up there on the ride home. Stupid traffic!! Don't they know me and my baby need to MOVE?

    Oh well.....

    Train

I am in Puerto Rico and my '99 runs hot too, in stop and go... Comes right down with speed though. We can split traffic unlike you but we must wear a helmet. I flushed the cooling system and keep the radiater front clean. Still is hot sitting in traffic on a 85+ day.

  9. I recently replaced my K&N air filter with a new OEM Honda filter and also changed my sparkplugs (IMR9A-9H).

Tonight I found that my mileage has dropped from 38 mpg to approximately 15 mpg.

The bike "seems" to be running smoothly, accelerating normally but... draining the fuel tank like there was a hole in the bottom.

When I got home, I removed the tank and started to try and find if I'd forgotten to plug something back in when the air filter housing was removed for the sparkplug change but everything was properly connected.

I had purchased a couple sets of plugs from Sparkplugs.com in 2002 and this was the second set that I'd installed so that they were about 5 years old but... so were the ones that I'd just removed after 24,000 miles of use in the bike and they were just fine.

Any guesses as to what used to be connected and may not be connected now that would have caused a mileage change this drastic?

Check the Crankcase and see if any gas is in there. I would get 60 miles on a tank. Fuel was also blown into the exhaust system. A faulty fuel pressure regulator was my problem. Stuck on full pressure. Good luck..

  10. I am experiencing a "PLUNKing" sound only when letting off the throttle quickly. It seems to be coming from the top of the engine. Can the aircleaner be the source of this sound? Or could the ram air tubes be a culprit. Happens on the go and while stationary. Has anyone experienced this before??? My BB is a '99 with FI.

  11. Also I noticed my dampners behind the rear sprocket are showing some cracks and general wear. How long do you all get out of them? icon_cool.gif

Most guys just stuff some old rags up in there when the rubber gives out.

I enjoy a good sense of humor...

(it's not nice to lie to the new guys :icon_nono: )

  12. I have a Z6 rear and a M1 front as some others here. It is my fist set and about 3,000 in to them. It is wearing well. should get about 6000 out of both. The Z-6 has been soft enough for me and the M1 has very good feedback.

That makes sense to me. Running M1s, I go through 2 rear before the front is ready. I was thinking along those lines but wasn't sure if mixing compounds between front and rear was kosher. I like the idea of a sticky tire up front and a rear thats hard and firm. Kinda the way I like my women. 6000 miles I can live with. My front got that and the rear was 1/2 that. So it sounds like the thing to do. You are the man :icon_clap:

  13. Thanks guys for the support. Yesterday I got a tire shipment from Ron Ayers. I am trying a harder compound. The Road Tech Metzler Z6 so far (95 miles tonight) seem to stick plenty good. I broke in the tires and chain and then I did some low to medium speed twistys and a couple charges to 160mph out on the highway. No apparent slipage with the exception of getting really light over rises. My last tires were the Sport tech and before that the Michelin Pilots. We are real hard on tires out here. I want to see if I can get more miles out of this set. We have tons of pot holes not to mention man hole covers that have blown off during heavy rain. Keeps you alert. During this tire change I did my first sprocket/chain change.(21,000mi) Original sprockets still look good. From Parts 411.com I got a ZR Regina(chain and both sprockets) combo kit for $180. Ron Ayers was $200 for both tires. Here they want $240 for just the rear tire. Anyway I was looking for any reports on the Z6. Let me know your experience with these tires if any. I was appauled when I pulled off the sprocket cover. I never seen so much gook. The original front sprocket has rubber, I think, on both sides. Reginas did not. So far I can't tell a difference other than how damn smooth the bike is with a fresh set of tires ,sprockets and chain. I was down for a month before this change and I am refucking amazed with this bike. Oh ya, I found out why there are so many Hayabusas here in PR. They were cheaper than our Honda!!! But still many of these guys spend a fortune on customising the 1300. Lots of chrome, custom wheels, paint and more. Also I noticed my dampners behind the rear sprocket are showing some cracks and general wear. How long do you all get out of them? :icon_cool:

  14. Wasn't a eye burner for me.

I am almost blind in the morning. Especially before the coffee has sunk in. :icon_biggrin:

I just figured it was written for the old farts. :icon_razz:

Don't blame you. I look at this shit I wrote and cringed... I just turned 48 today. Does that qualify for old fart status??? I started celebrating early. Didn't mean to waste space on your fun website. I have only seen 2 Blackbirds here and when I found this site I went crazy. :icon_twisted:

  15. Nice to see a Puerto Rican on the forum. My mom and her Catholic siblings are from the island. I've been there a couple times, stick around, you'll like this place. Plus, if you learn to turn off the all caps, the other members will love reading your stuff.

I was out of it. Up all night. Couldn't see well so the caps came in handy for me. Thanks for correcting me...

  16. HERE IS MY TAKE ON THIS 200MPH SHIT. I HAVE BEEN RIDING BIKES SINCE I WAS 14 YEARS OLD. THE FIRST WAS A BLACK HONDA 90.(1965) PUT A STRAIGHT PIPE ON IT AND IT WOULD HIT 65 OR SO.(8 HP) SOUNDED COOL AND WAS REALLY FUN TO RIDE. I WAS HOOKED. THEN A HODAKA 100 SUPER RAT CAME MY WAY. IT WAS MY FIRST 2 STROKE. I WAS VERY IMPRESSED WITH THE SOUND AND THE POWER. IT WAS GREAT FOR TRAIL RIDING. WHEN I GOT MY LICENCE AT 16 I WAS READY FOR THE ROAD AND GOT A GOOD DEAL ON A USED HONDA CB 350. IT WAS A FLAT POWER BAND COMPARED TO THE 2 STROKES AND DID PRETTY WELL RIGHT UP TO AROUND 90MPH. MY DREAM BIKE AS A KID WAS DEVELOPED BY WATCHING A LOCAL GUY DOING...

Dude! Let me get you a cup of decaf, alright?

Thanks man. I needed a vallium. Please forgive me...

  17. WHEN I GOT MY LICENCE AT 16 I WAS READY FOR THE ROAD AND GOT A GOOD DEAL ON A USED HONDA CB 350. IT WAS A FLAT POWER BAND COMPARED TO THE 2 STROKES AND DID PRETTY WELL RIGHT UP TO AROUND 90MPH. MY DREAM BIKE AS A KID WAS DEVELOPED BY WATCHING A LOCAL GUY DOING WHEELIES AROUND TOWN, ON THE H1 KAW 500 TRIPLE.(1969).FASTEST BIKE AT THE TIME. I GOT ONE WHEN I WAS 18. IT HAD 60 HP. WOULD HIT 12.4 SECONDS IN THE 1/4 MILE AND ITS TOP END WAS CLOSE TO 124. THEN I MOVED UP TO THE H2 KAW 750 TRIPLE. IT DID 12 FLAT IN THE 1/4 WITH JUST A LITTLE MORE TOP END.(128)THESE 2 STROKE TRIPLE KAWS WERE REAL PIPEY, SOUNDED LIKE NO OTHER BIKE BUT HANDLED LIKE DOG SHIT AND LOOKING BACK YOU MAY AS WELL HAVE BEEN DOING 200MPH. A LOT OF THEM NEVER MADE 10000 MILES BEFORE THEY WERE WRECKED. IF YOU HAD TO BRAKE OR GOD FORGIVE CHANGE DIRECTIONS AT OVER 100 YOUR ASS WOULD PUCKER REALLY, REALLY TIGHT WHILE FIGHTING THE WOBBLE IN EVEN IN THE SLIGHTEST TURN. I PROCEEDED TO CRASH ONE DAY IN A TURN AND BROKE MY COLLAR BONE. IN 1981 I GOT A BRAND NEW GS550E SUZUKI THAT TOPPED OUT AT 124MPH AS ADVERTISED.IT TOO HAD ABOUT 60HP. I FOUND LATER THAT STAT TO BE INCREDIBLY ACCURATE. ITS A 4 STROKE 4 CYLINDER WITH A SMOOTHER BUT PEPPY POWERBAND, GOOD BRAKES AND QUICK HANDLING. ONE SUMMER DAY IN THE S.F.BAY AREA I DID 124 FOR 10 MILES WHILE BEING CHASED BY SEVERAL CHP'S IN MUSTANGS ON HIWAY 580 HEADING TOWARDS LIVERMORE. I FELT LIMITED AS IT WAS A BIT SLOWER THAN THE COPS 140 MPH MUSTANG. LUCKY FOR ME I JUGGLED THROUGH TRAFFIC AND TOOK A QUICK EXIT RAN A STOP SIGN A QUICK BLAST FOR A MILE FOLLOWED BY 2 RIGHTS TO A FRIENDS HOUSE AND I LOST THEM BASTURDS FOR GOOD. SOLD IT THE NEXT WEEKEND AND GOT OUT OF THE SPORT. (I WAS ABOUT TO LOSE MY LICIENSE). JUST 4 YEARS AGO I WAS GETTING THE BUG AGAIN WATCHING THE MULTITUDE OF HYABUSAS THAT ARE ALL OVER THIS ISLAND. WHILE VISITING OREGON I FOUND A GOOD DEAL ON A BLACK 1976 SUZUKI 700 INTRUDER FOR $1500 LIKE NEW WITH A HELMET A LOCK AND A COVER WITH 8000 MILES. I SHIPPED IT HERE TO PUERTO RICO AND REALLY ENJOYED PUTTING AROUND THE ISLAND. IT WAS REALLY FUN AND COMFORTABLE UNLESS YOU DO A LOT OF FREEWAY CRUISING. 45 HP OR SO BUT GREAT TORQUE FOR CITY DRIVING. AT 100MPH THE BIKE HAS HEAVY VIBRATION AND FEELS LIKE IT MIGHT BLOW UP AT ANY TIME.(104 TOP SPEED) ONE DAY I LET A FRIEND OF MINE RIDE IT. HE DIDN'T WANT TO BUT I INSISTED. IT WORKED. 1 WEEK LATER HE GOT A HONDA SUPERHAWK 996. WE WOULD RIDE AROUND AND I WOULD GET HIM OFF THE STOP LIGHTS BUT AFTER 70MPH HE WAS GONE. I WAS ALWAYS BEHIND ON OUR ISLAND EXCURSIONS. I FELT LIKE I WAS ON A FUCKING MINI BIKE. HE KEEP TELLING ME TO UPGRADE. 2 YEARS AGO I FOUND LOCAL RESIDENT WITH A 1999 CBR1100XX BLACKHAWK WITH ONLY 6000 MILES.(THEY ARE RARE HERE) THE OWNER WAS UNABLE TO RIDE IT DO TO HIS INEXPERIENCE WITH BIKES. IT WAS TO BIG AND UNFREINDLY. HE TIPPED IT OVER A COUPLE TIMES JUST PUSHING IT IN AND OUT OF THE HOUSE. I WENT TO CHECK IT OUT WITH OUT KNOWING A THING ABOUT THIS BIKE. IT WAS RUNNING BUT WOULDNT IDLE WELL AND IT SMOKED A LOT. I FIGURED I COULD CHANGE THE PLUGS AND FIX IT. I OFFERED $3500 AND MY USER FRIENDLY INTRUDER. HE WANTED AT LEAST $4500 SINCE HE PAID $9500 AND ONLY MANAGED TO TIP IT OVER A COUPLE TIMES OVER THE YEAR HE HAD IT. BUT I STUCK TO MY GUNS. LATER ON HE TOOK MY OFFER. RIDING IT TO MY HOME , I WAS WONDERING IF I DID THE RIGHT THING. IT WAS REALLY BLOWING OUT A LOT OF BLUE SMOKE. THEN I FIND OUT THAT ITS FUEL INJECTED. I HAVE TO GET A FUCKING MANUAL. I KNOW ZIP ABOUT FI. THE PLUGS HERE IN PUERTO RICO WERE $18 EACH AND I THINK OH SHIT, HERE WE GO. I DID THE CHANGE(2 HOURS) AND IT STILL BLOWS SMOKE. I WOULD BLOW THROUGH A TANK IN 45 MILES. STILL WAITING FOR A MANUAL I WAS HELPLESS. CHECKING MY OIL I FOUND THE DIPSTICK GETTING A HIGHER READING AND SMELLING A LOT LIKE GAS. GAS WAS POURING THROUGH THE ENGINE. SHIT, NOT GOOD. I FOUND A MECHANIC THAT I COULD TRUST. A MONTH LATER(ISLAND TIME HERE) IT TURNED OUT TO BE A FAULTY FUEL PRESSURE REGULATOR. HE DID A COUPLE OIL CHANGES AND INSTALLED THE REG

FOR $175. HE WHEELED HER DOWN THE RAMP OUT OF THE SHOP AND RAN IT DOWN THE SIDE STREET AND BACK. ON THE WAY BACK HE CRACKED THE THROTTLE AND I WATCHED HIM STAND THAT BLACKBITCH ON ITS REAR WHEEL. I WAS VERY IMPRESSED. HE SAID SHE IS RUNNING LIKE A CHAMP AND THAT THE REMAINING SMOKE WILL BURN OUT OF THE PIPES OVER TIME. THAT DAY CHANGED MY LIFE. I HAVE RODE A LOT OF BIKES BUT THERE IS NOTHING LIKE THIS BLACKBIRD XX. I HAVE GOT IT UP TO 175 INDICATED ON A 2 MILE BRIDGE LATE AT NIGHT AND I TELL YOU WHAT. FUCK 200MPH. I WAS WEARING A HALF HELMET TUCKED BEHIND MY LITTLE ZERO GRAVITY WINDSCREEN. MY CHEEKS WERE FLUTTERING AND SPIT WAS BEING SUCKED OUT OF MY MOUTH. IT WAS FUCKING INSANE. ON THE ROAD AT LEAST HERE IN PR THERE ARE FEW AREAS WHERE YOU NEED 200MPH. I HAVE LOST A NUMBER OF COPS HERE ALREADY WITH OUT HAVING TO DO MORE THAN AN EASY 145MPH. THIS BIKE IS SO GREAT AT THE STOCK SETTINGS. I AGREE WITH ONE GUY OUT THERE THAT THE K&N FILTER DOESNT DO SHIT. I TOOK IT OFF.+ IT DOESN'T SEEM TO SEAL PROPERLY. I LOVE MY QUIET STOCK PIPES. YOU CAN HARDLY HEAR THE ENGINE AT HIGH SPEED. MY FRIEND THAT HAD THE SUPER HAWK NOW HAS THE 2006 KAW NINJA X10. YES ITS CLOSER TO 200MPH BUT GUESS WHAT. I AM ALWAYS IN FRONT. ITS GEARED HIGH. 104MPH IN FIRST. I DO 2 SHIFTS TO 105. WE ARE NOW NECK AND NECK AND STARTS TO PASS. BUT NOW ITS TIME TO SLOW DOWN FOR TRAFFIC OR SAFTEY REASONS. I CAN STOP BETTER. THE HONDA IS HEAVIER, MORE STABLE AND THE LINKED BRAKE SYSTEM SLOWS YOU DOWN IN A HURRY. ANOTHER COOL THING IS SHE CAN RIDE 2 UP WITH COMFORT. I RODE A 245LB FAT BITCH ON THE BACK ACROSS THE ISLAND. WE HIT 155MPH ON A BRIDGE(NO POSSIBLE SIDE TRAFFIC) BEFORE SHE CHOKED ME OUT AND BEGAN BEATING MY CHEST. JUST AS WE HIT THAT OVERPASS UNDER FULL THROTTLE IN 3RD AT 115MPH THE FRONT END CAME UP A FOOT OR SO BUT REMAINED VERY STABLE AND SET DOWN AFTER THE RISE DISPITE ARE OVER WEIGHT CONDITION. WE SLOWED BACK DOWN TO 100MPH FOR THE REST OF THE TRIP AND IT TRULY FELT LIKE YOU COULD JUMP OFF THE BIKE AND RUN ALONG SIDE OF IT. AT 100 IN 6TH YOU FEEL LIKE YOU ARE JUST IDLING . IF ANYTHING I WOULD CONSIDER TO DROP A TOOTH IN THE FRONT OR ADD A COUPLE IN THE BACK. UNLESS YOU ARE ON THE SALT FLATS OR A CLOSED CIRCUIT, 200MPH IS NOT A GREAT IDEA. THE REAL FUN IS BETWEEN 20 AND 155. CRACK THIS BIRD AT 20 AND SHE GOES FORWARD STRAIGHT AND TRUE WITH THE FRONT NOT FAR ABOVE THE TAR. ITS NOT HOW FAST SHE'LL GO IN THE RARE 2 MILE FULL THROTTLE RUNS. ITS HOW QUICKLY YOU CAN SPEED UP AND SLOW DOWN IN TERMS OF RIDING IN TRAFFIC. WE CAN SPLIT THE LANES HERE AT ANY SPEED. I AM NOW 48 AND I FEEL LIKE A KID IN A CANDY STORE. I RUN WITH THE BUSAS,NINJAS NO PROB. THEY PAID $12000 OR MORE, I PAID $3500 + A $1500 BIKE THAT I DIDNT WANT ANY MORE. YOU SAY YOU WANT 200MPH. I SAY YOUR ASKING FOR IT. GO AHEAD JUST ADD NITRUS AND A $6000 MITSUBI TURBO AND BURN THAT BITCH UP. IT SHOULD DO ABOUT 250MPH WITH A HIGH BOOST SETTING. I PLAN ON RIDING MY XX FOR MANY MORE TROUBLE FREE MILES. I HAVE 22,000 MILES ALREADY MOST OF WHICH IS ALL AT 100MPH + WITH A NINJA ON MY TAIL... GOOD LUCK, MANNY---

  18. UPS guy just dropped off the chain & sprockets I ordered from sprocketcenter.com. Woohoo! right? Not so fast...

Even though I ordered the 'AFAM 530ZVM2 Gold Chain Kit', the chain that came today is a DID 530ZVM2 'S-Bright'. WTF???? So I open the box to check it out and sure enough, it's not 'gold'. It is however, a nice and shiny 530ZVM2 chain.

Looking at kneedraggers.com they have two 530ZVM2 chains listed, a gold and a silver with the silver being $20 cheaper. They are the only site I could find that even gave you a choice of color, all the others list only the 'gold".

Personally, I couldn't care less about the color of the chain, I just don't want to be paying 'extra' for something I didn't get. What do you guys think?

    Chuck

I think you should get $20 off your next order...Silver or gold is all good... I got a Regina chain kit (Gold) for $180 from Parts411.com. 530ZRP/110 What did your cost???
