  1. You're screwed........... :icon_biggrin:

I searched high and low and there really is no powdercoat color that matches the frame. The XX frame is painted with a very dark, matte finished, charcoal and I couldn't seem to find a powder that matched.

The closest you can get is a 99% flat black. Totally flat black will have a rough texture and will look similiar but not perfect.

    Jeff,

I went with the black texture, and the color matched the frame very well in most all light. True, the arm was textured and the frame was not, but in photos and real life, it worked very well fuckyouverymuch. :icon_razz:

    Hey Now.

I went with the flat black powder as well. It looked close but I'm rather particular so I then painted the frame, swingarm, footpegs, shifter, frame plugs, brake lever, and shock dogbones to match. Flat black paint covered with a matte clearcoat made it all match nicely.

    Nice exhaust huh Jer? :icon_biggrin::icon_biggrin::icon_biggrin::icon_biggrin:

Where did you get the tail section from? Looks sweet!!!!

  2. Small pebble on tank bag pad put a noticeable scratch in my tank.

What do you all recommend to remove or diminish it. It'll be covered with a new tank cover, but I'd like to buff out the scratch as much as possible.

You can try some polishing compound. If the scratch is too deep, then use some very fine grip wet-sanding paper to take the edge off. Then buff it out with polishing compound.

  3. Just looking to see who else is running this system on their Bird, Mines an 01, and after installing it, I noticed my mileage drop/ running rich.

Put a PCIII on , really good power, but still bad mileage. Anyone else have this problem?

    Thanks :icon_doh:

Have had the same setup since day one with a K&N airfilter on a 2000, I get 36-39 mpg. I'm in Denver so everything runs rich due to lack of oxygen.

  4. Right after I shut down the bike I get a strong gas smell. I checked for leaks under the tank and there are none. Its a 2000 so all the gas lines are under pressure. There's two vent tubes coming down in front of the rear tire. The thicker one goes right up to the bottom of the fuel tank. The thinner one goes up under the tank area and isn't attached to anything. Is this my problem? It wouldn't be doing any good not attached. I know I'll get some gas fumes off the exhaust, but this seems to be coming from under the tank area. Anyone have a clue?

  5. I know someone with those small led signals, and he doesn't like them because they aren't as visible at night. My biggest fear on the bike is getting hit from behind!

Yeah, the cheapo ones are pretty dim. I noticed these on another bird, and was impressed with how much brighter they were than even the stock rear turn signals, so I dropped the cash on them. They're $40 a pair, and made of metal instead of the cheap black plastic

$40 is nothing if they're bright and noticeable.

P.S. you must be an E.R doc or RN if you go by OrganDonor. The wife's an RN.

  6. Slinger, that is exact the location and the approximate size of the lights I was considering. :icon_dance:

Installation not too complicated? Hey what's 5150 signify? (I used to use that code often when I was a CA LEO)

I agree with you and John that installing in the rear vents would obscure side visibility. (And since I slice and dice on the freeway commute everyday, that would concern me.)

    Thanks guys for your assistance.

I just measured carefully so they were even on both sides. Drilled the holes for the wires and screws. I can look at the specific wire colors for you if you need it. I just used a volt meter and tested for the hot lead. It took me about 20 minutes to do. I used to do car audio and electronics for a living, so drilling holes and tapping wires is not a big deal to me. It might take you longer if you're not used to doing this stuff.

I have them, and I don't like them.

I don't think they look clean at all. I'm actually going to take them off, replace the rear cowl with a spare, and put on some quality LED metal mini-stalk turn signals I originally got for Michelle's Ninja.

  7. Adam and I just picked up a 2000 Bird for a member in California that he is picking up next month to take to NEXXT.

It just so happens to have the cat Eye lights mounted inside the tail vents. It surprised me how nice they look. There would be a visibility problem from the side but seem to work well from the rear.

    Very clean look

Unfortunately I am not able to get pictures due to the Bird being stored about 50 miles from me until the new owner picks it up on the 6th of September when we ride together up to NEXXT.

I've seen them in the rear vents. Like the way they look also, didn't like the lack of visibility from the sides though!

  8. Hey Guys,

I was thinking of streamlining the rear end a little on my '97 Bird and was thinking of replacing the rear turn signal with amber medium sized cat eyes in the rear cowl.

I was looking over my service manual and it does not appear to be hard in removing the cowl, or rear turn signals or accessing wires.

    Has anyone done this?

    Anything I should know about?

Also, once the rear signals are removed, do you have any suggestions for plugging or filling the holes in the rear fender so it does not look like a prize fighter with a couple of teeth missing? :icon_think:

I did it to mine and shaved the plastic in the back so the holes left were removed. Here are some pics. If you have any questions on wiring, let me know?

  9. Don't believe everything you read.

Good sales pitch on their home page but pure BS to the educated Detail person.

I can assure you that no professional Detailers will be using the product. It is directed specifically to the uneducated retail buyer who doesn't know any better.

Only buy products that are sold as a commercial detailing product and not just a retail product only.

As with any product used for polishing or waxing, nothing is made that will clean, shine and or protect that is scratch free. Being scratch free is determined by the applicator and not the product. For best scratch free application always use micro-fiber towels for "Wax On - Wax Off"

Micro-fiber and the product of your choice will give you good results with virtually no chance of scratching the surface.

Whether a product scratches or not can be determined by the product. Some products list silica sand in the ingredients. This is used to polish any hairline scratches or buffer swirl marks out of paint. Always read what's in the product.

You are correct though. What type of cloth you use makes a big difference on the finish also.

  10. All things are relative. Of course the XX lacks power below 6000 rpm...in comparison to above 6000 rpm.

You should be able to accelerate cleanly and steadily from 2000-2500 up in 5th or 6th gear. Briskly, no, but steadily yes, unless you are carrying a passenger up a real steep hill. If its stumbling or uneven running, you might consider a tune-up...plugs, air filter, and some Seafoam in the tank.

BTW...what's wrong with 6th gear? Some taboo thing I haven't noticed? Mine runs fine at 60 on the highway in high gear.

    +1.

I use 6th all the time on the highway. Makes the tank last longer. It only takes half a second to click down twice and go!

  11. Can confirm as others have observed... the FI XX handles altitude just fine. I can't tell a diff between 5,000 and 12,000 feet... though I've never had the bird down near sea level. Sometimes I wonder if I'm missing anything.

I live in Denver now and try to get up into the mountains whenever possible. I have a 2000 xx. I used to live in Chicago ( about 680ft above sea level) and had a 98' xx there. It is a very noticeable difference in power from there to just Denver.
