  1. I got the 6mm shim from John's Bike Bits (great price, great service) but I am having an issue installing it. I found the

instructions here in the garage (thanks Techno and Redbird!) and was able to get to the top nut of my shock and loosen it.

The rear wheel never got any lower, though. I don't have a center stand because I have a 4-into-1 exhaust so I am using

a PitBull rear wheel stand, so I was not really expecting the wheel to drop all the way to the ground but I was hoping for

    some movement.

I did upgrade my rear shock with the group buy a few years ago and got a Penske 8983. Could that be why I did not get

any action when I loosened the nut? I don't believe the shock changed the ride height of my Bird at all so I am at a loss

as to why I am having such a hard time with this fairly simple procedure.

If anyone has any ideas or suggestions as to what I am doing wrong or why it is not working I would greatly appreciate it.

    Thanks.

First I must say you did not need the shim since that Penske has the ride height adjustment built in. The only way you will get the gap you need to install the shim is with a lift that does not require you to support the bike from the swingarm or rear wheel for that matter.

  2. I am in need of a left mirror bracket, and the mirror cover in black if possible. Also could be interested in a windscreen, but may go ebay for that. Anyone that has something laying around or could point me in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks!

    Matt

PM sent Matt, hopefully I can help.

  3. I stopped by the Honda dealer after the gun show today. The Goldwings were whispering in my ear. Still love the Blackbird but I need something with more protection and storage so I can come pester you bastards on a more regular basis.

Maybe go halfway and get a ST or FJR?

Don't let that whispering bother you. I have a 08 Goldwing with suspension by Traxxion Dynamics and would most likely prefer the wing over both the ST or the FJR. If i had more gutts I would give those ST and FJR riders a run for their money with the wing.

  4. I'm having the forks upgraded on the SV using their springs, etc, and Race Tech gold valves. They said they can rebuild the rear shock on my Blackbird for a reasonable price. I've looked around for a used one off of a CBR 900 or 954, no luck. As soon as I have a chance, I plan to send it back.

What sold me on the Traxxion staff is that they prefer 10W fork oil as opposed to the 20W from Race Tech. I agree with the Traxxion guys that the viscosity difference will be noticeable in colder versus summer weather. From my experience of having worked in an engine oil lab in the past, I think they have the better approach. I'll post again after I get a chance to put the SV through its paces.

If you need a stock shock to send to them, make me an offer. I have my stocker off an 03 after switching to an Ohlins.

  9. The hugger is black, it is not a show quality paint job or anything since it came to me in primer. There are a couple of stress cracks where it bolts at the front of the swingarm if memory serves me. but it is still solid. I will try to take some pics when I get home. There is also a small gouge where the left exhuast can would hit during spirited riding. Of course this would not have been a problem with stock cans

    Kevin

I also have a hugger rear fender that I purchased from War Eagle that I am wanting to get $75.00 for ( I paid $100+shipping).

    Kevin,

What condition is the hugger in? Cracks/scratches etc?

    Is it black?

Any interest in the above mentioned items should be directed to kdragunslayeratgmail.com be sure to have blackbird parts in subject line.

I guess I should email then huh... mmmmk.

  10. The forks pretty much were left on the bike since I did not want to tear them down to get the components out. I do have the Penske 8981 Double adjustable shock with roughly 16,000 on it. This is a $900.00 shock in excellent condition. I know you are on a budget but I am looking to get at least $600 out of the shock. I also have a hugger rear fender that I purchased from War Eagle that I am wanting to get $75.00 for ( I paid $100+shipping). If you are interested I also have a set of the risers that Jaws sells out of Europe, these sell for $170.00+shipping to the states. I am hoping to get at least $100.00 for them.

$200.00 for the Power Commander USB III

    The exhaust has sold...

    Risers are sold...

Any interest in the above mentioned items should be directed to kdragunslayeratgmail.com be sure to have blackbird parts in subject line. These prices are somewhat negotiable within reason.

  11. It seems like there are a lot of people interested in passenger foot peg lowering brackets so to keep the other thread dedicated to the front I am starting a new thread.

It will take me some time and probably a few different styles of bracket as I'm sure everyone still wants them to fold up when not in use, before I get one that I like.

Post up here if interested in some and if you have any ideas you'd like to share, feel free!

  12. It's happened to me more than once. Luckily Honda was nice enough to put that nub on the back of the cover to keep the bolt from coming all the way out. When your chain all of a sudden seems real tight, that bolt is the first thing you should check.

The reason my bolt was coming loose was because I had changed sprockets and the new one was just a little wider at the shaft than the factory sprocket. This caused the washer on the bolt to be "dished" when tightened. It was always trying to force the bolt out. Even with blue Loctite it wouldn't stay. A small spacer washer solved the problem. When the bolt is tight, the sprocket should still be able to slide back and forth on the shaft a few thousands of an inch.

    Thanks Jon,

I am running the stock size sprocket but an aftermarket version currently. I will keep an eye on it from now on. I did not use any lock tite but torqued to spec. I whish I would have known the chain tightening part before I cut the chain I had on there off. It probably only had about 8-10,000 miles on it and I figured it had a kink in it.

    Kevin

  13. Well,

I got it done, but I am wondering wether the tech that did the last install was Pee Wee Herman :icon_redface: since I needed none of the advice suggested above to loosen the bolt holding the counter sprocket in place. In fact all that was rquired was the use of my fingers and to think how many times I have had that bike deep in the triple digits. :icon_naughty:

Has anyone had a problem with the bolt loosening after being torqued properly? Just curious if this is something I should watch closer or what. I am glad I got a kink in the chain and thought to replace the sprockets and chain or who knows what would have happened.

    Kevin

  14. Dont need to drain it, just dont touch the lever when you have the cover off. take the 8mm screws off around the edges of the cover only.

You'll need a 14 mm socket to get the sprocket bolt out. and an arm as big as N1k's to break that sucker loose.

a 2x4 through the wheel to keep it from turning helps.

    Thanks,

I knew I could count on getting an answer pretty quick on this forum. Kinda like I told the little lady, "Post your question, and walk away for a few moments and hit refresh and believe it ornot you will usually have an answer when you get back"

    gotta love this internet thing.

    Kevin

    Thanks again.

  15. Okay,

I am going to replace my sprockets with his chain and have never attempted this on the Bird. I need to know if I will need to drain the clutch fluid since it appears the line runs into the cover for the counter sprocket. The manual I have does not state if this is needed.

    Any help would be appreciated

    Kevin

  16. My Parents sold there bike and no longer have any use for this BRAND NEW tank bag. It was never used and they are looking to get 75 dollars+ shipping from it of best offer. They aslo have a Model HJC-90 Person to Person Sports Communication System ( open face model). This system can be fitted to a Full face helmet also since I also have one and have done so. The comminication system comes witheverything needed to fit to a helmet+ a speaker and boom mic for a pasenger helmet also so that it can be used as in intercom system also. They paid $150.00 for this system and it has never been installed into the helmets, my mother purchased a set in hopes that when we rode together my father and I would use them, but we were never able to arrange the same ride time.

  17. When Adjusting your chain when using a swing arm stand, do you; adjust it slightly tighter, looser or the same?

    I am thinking slightly tighter.

Slightly looser than the spec would be since once rider weight and that is added it will put tension on the chain.

  18. Stock mufflers are about as desireable as having a face full of Zits on Prom night! Take what you can get out of them and be thankful that they are not hanging on the wall of your garage for 20 years collecting dust!!!

    Yeah Yeah,

Thanks Vern and i am sure that you are correct, but it never hurts to ask for what you really want. I mean damn, I just sold a Corbin seat from my Magna that I paid $200.00 for and somebody gave me $275.00 for it. Granted we are talking apples and oranges, but like I stated. There is probably someone out there that likes the stock pipes and is trying to put their bike back on the road for minimal cost.
