Hadn't thunk of that, great idea.  If it does loosen it maybe a plastic scraper will get the chunky stuff off.  I tried it dry and the plastic just wasn't quite hard enough to make it happen.

Try plastic, I used metal and was careful. I could get under it and kinda pop it off.

Yea, I dig it.  Technically it's a pile of shit compared to any modern bike (brakes, suspension, tires, etc.) but it's fun.  I feel bad for those behind me, but also enjoy making smoke clouds when I whack the throttle.  And the only reason I have it is because California wouldn't let me street register my XR650R because it doesn't meet street bike emissions requirements.  But the old two smoker is fine because it's a street bike.

Here is my vintage street ride. Yes they are not up to todays standards for sure! Don't feel bad for everybody behind you, fuck that. I get so many thumbs up it's not funny. I thinking of putting some chambers on it but stuck on the stock look and really not wanting to mess with jetting. Fun to putt around on though. 2 smokes forever!

I tried aluminum foil and water, it seemed to work much faster than the steel wool but scratched the fuck out of the chrome.  I wish I'd used it on a hidden area.  I think it's the rust particles doing the scratching, not the material being used to scrub.  Neverdull seems to do nothing for the crusty rust, just removes the lighter stuff, but doesn't scratch at all.  It also seems to do nothing for removing the scratches made with the wool and foil.

Yes, Most likely the rust doing it. The foil should not be harder than the chrome. What I have done in the past if it is bad is hit it with WD40 let it sit a few hrs or even overnight. seems to loosen it up. Then take a flat blade screwdriver or a scraper. The edge needs to be good and flat and scrape off the large pcs. of rust. I try not to let the tool go past the rust area and just work on that a little and pop it off. Otherwise you will scratch it with the tool. Then with the foil keep flushing it to get the large chucks of rust off so it will not damage the rest of the chrome. when there is less rust you can get more aggressive with the foil. Yes it is time consuming. By the way, COOL BIKE!

  4. Yea, best thing is foil and coke or dr. pepper. I have heard vinegar also but have not tried it. Then some type of polish/ simichrome to finish. Steel wool will always end up scratching chrome. The RD's and other Jap bikes had cheap chrome bits and rust easy. My RD400 was pretty well taken care of and still had rust on it.

I have those on the bicycles, cost adds up fast, you have to carry a bunch for a motorcycle.

The Airmoto site is a scam.  Did you read the site?  This is why I was asking for experiences; everything is astroturfed bullshit.  Anyway, I bought the exact same unit for half the price without the name on it and a longer warranty.  I put the picture from Airmoto into image search, and it showed me all of the sources of the same generic Chinese unit.  Amazon had the second best price and best delivery.  It's the only compressor with high reviews which Fakespot rates as an A.

Looks a little different. Hopefully it is as good as the airmoto. Seems a lot more people bought the airmoto? I currently have a microstart compressor however it requires the bike battery, but good enough for now. Keep us posted on it's performance.

  6. The Airmoto compressor is a pretty good unit though it costs more than the others. Friends are pretty happy with it.

On the XR 27-29 psi would be good. 13-14 fine for the dirt.👍

EDIT: When I ride my dual sport on the road I'm usually never over 21-23 PSI.

I do that everyday. Didn't help.

And I must now go back to the original post to select another page of the same thread. Can no longer go forward or back after reading all the posts on that page.

    Behaving odd at my house.

mine is doing the same thing

  8. Hopefully you remember the old screw setting, just put it back for now. It should be lean not rich from the factory, so it is weird it will not start with the choke on.

You will most likely need to put 500 or so miles on it to loosen up the motor and it will idle a bit higher. If it is still a problem you may have to go up a size on the pilot jet.

Looks like a fun camping bike!

  9. Nice find! Best off cleaning it up best you can and keep it unrestored as it looks very original. Other than that, dig in deep and rechrome everything. Japanese chrome was shitty in the 70's.

Here is my '77 rd400. a lot of fun around town. So many people want to talk about them. I always wanted one in Highschool. After getting one and owning a Blackbird I just shake my head. Oh the 70's.

It's only been like 14 years; what's the rush?

    And yes.

Well then it looks like a new thread needs to start! At this point in time it may be short notice but we could most likely get a few takers. I'm sure Cal and friends would be up for it.

  11. Good to see another bird fan close by!  I will take the VFR bars if the deal falls through. I need a set.

                                                                                                                               Thanks, John

Damn we need to get another Westcoast bash going again!
