Okay, it's solved.
I took it all off, put the tank back on and it fired right up
Then it died
I fiddled around with it for a bit, but it would only idle. I let it warm up with the choke and slowly let the choke off. No hesitations, stumbling or anything weird. With the choke off, any amount of gas would instantly kill it
I started by putting one thing at a time on and restarting to see how it liked it. It likes it with EVERYTHING left on  I concluded that the carbs have a total of 7 vacuum lines coming out, 4 top, 2 center, and 1 from the bottom of the #3 carb. It ran better and better as I reattached each of these lines. When I removed the lines initially, I used automotive style vacuum plugs, so there wasn't an issue. It must be something int he balance of the vacuum swirling around down there :?
I dunno, I guess I'm stuck with an evaporative system
If anyone wants to know how to disconnect and put it all back on, I'm your man
