  1. Air filter and plugs this weekend. I think the bike may have sat awhile in some sort of outdoor environment, shed, outside covered, who knows.

My VFR sat in a horse stable for 3 months, covered, and wrapped in a tarp. I removed the battery and some little shit head mouse made a nest where my battery should have been.

    Thanks for the advice

  2. Alright, guru's, bullshitters, techy's or whomever else may give a shit.

2 months after starting this thread I finally got off my ass and did something about it. Friday I replaced the chain and sprockets, same stock gearing as before, and cleaned the shit out of everything in there. Oil/filter change, bleed clutch, and replaced all vacuum tubes. Should have done brake fluid, oh well. Checked the free spin on both tires, bearings and brakes seem good. Bike feels brand new.

Same gas mileage, shitty. When I bought the bike, the owner had just changed the spark plugs he said. Yea, raised my suspicions also, but got a good price so fuck it. I soon find out my FPR is shit, and replaced it. When I first replaced it, gas milage seemed a bit better for awhile, then became shitty again, tried another FPR, no bueno. I ride fairly hard, but recently toned it down a bit to see if there was a fluctuation in MPG, barely.

    ?

Enough BS'ing. Next steps... air filter change? another spark plug change? vac sensor? Quit bitching?

    Thanks

    Dan

  3. I am guessing you are talking about the vacuum line coming from the FPR, mine does look a little rough. Are you saying, if this is cracked or broken, it cannot detect pressure? Would you go into more detail about this?

  4. Just trying to keep it short. I have done my reading on the site. I know enough about the FPR problem to know something else must be wrong, and wouldnt mind some opinions. About 3000 miles ago, my bike got shitty MPG, read up on it, and ended up changing out the broken FPR on my 99 to one from an 02 for the higher pressure. This worked for awhile. I ran some seafoam through, as this bike I bought had sat awhile. The bike continued to work fine. Miles per tank nearly 200. For some reason the gas mileage got shitty again after about 3000 miles. I changed the FPR to the model year 99 OEM. And the gas mileage still sucks. The bikes smells like gas, and there is gas in the oil again. Cant be the FPR.... suggestions? I also just changed out my SS2R slip ons back to the stock pipes for commuting.

  5. Nearly the same exact problem here. Before you shut down your bike next time, put your kick stand down in neutral and wait for the FI light to start blinking. Count the long blinks and short blinks and get back on here. Mine has 2 long, 5 short, which is supposively a faulty knock sensor.

BTW... mine is also an 03, and just turned 13000 miles the other day.

  6. Douche, why do you have to live in Mich. Love the bike. Just moved from ohio. Wishing I was still there to come take it off ur hands. Maybe a flight to Michigan... is the bike mechanically capable of a 2000 mile 3 day trip?

    and why are you selling?

  7. I was definitely geared up for that one. No shorts. Although when I took it around the block before my first oil change, I was a complete hippie douche wearing flip flops.

    Brake bleed... check. Interesting process.

Chain, surprisingly enough looks good, and feels good.

The only thing I might complain about are the pipes. They are too loud for me. Vance & Hines SS2R's carbon fiber, do these originally come with baffles? If so, I may need to obtain them somehow. The girlfriend said she could me hear coming home on the toll road on my way home from work(about 1/4 mile or more from the apartment) and was waiting with a beer for me at the garage... hahaha no bueno. I don't need the fuzz looking at me more than they already do, or the neighbors bitching, sucks to live in an apartment.

  8. Next purchase complete, can't stand the thought of laying it on coming out of a turn and sliding out the back end. Just ordered the Shinko Ravens on Ebay for 175.95 with free shipping. From all of the reviews I have read, hopefully I will be satisfied.

  9. So, after all my worrying, bitching, moaning, and over reacting, the new FPR finally came yesterday.

    - Installed the FPR,

    - Changed the oil(there was a whole extra liter of fuel in the crankcase when draining, let it drip for a half hour, the oil was BLACK, mind you it was clean 125 miles prior to)

    - New oil filter

    - Added half a can of seafoam to a full tank of new fuel, and added a couple ounces to the crank case also.

    - Bled the clutch line.

    - Rode 170 miles, refilled the tank, and added another half can of seafoam

About 350 miles in the 24 hours after the FPR install, the bike spins like a fucking top. I checked the oil and its still clean. I now understand the hype behind the blackbird. Bike was butter at 130 MPH (140 indicated). I plan to change out the oil again in 500 miles just to be safe.

Next purchase, new set of tires to replace the original, yes.. original dry rotted tires. Surprisingly enough they are holding together well, but they did break loose a couple times on hard launches, hard as a rock. I know everyone has different opinions on tires so I won't even ask for suggestions on new ones.

What octane does everyone run? There was no notable difference between 87 and 91. So I will stick to the cheaper unless it is ill advised.

Anyway, thanks to everyone for helping out with the Newb questions.

If anyone from SoCal wants to hit up the Ortega Highway this weekend, let me know.

***Also, added 3/4 can of seafoam to my magna that has been having carb problems lately. It cleaned that right up, no more bogging below 5k. Love the stuff.

To sum things up, Fuck Yes. Selling the VFR(maybe). And thanks again for the help.

  10. Well water level was about 2-3 inches above the oil filler. A check shows no water in the oil at all. I will give another day or two to dry out. now I worry about the starter being submerged

Frankly, other than electrical connectors, the bike is (for all practical purposes) watertight up to the breather hole for the crankcase (above stator cover more or less). If water got in via the oil filter, you would be leaking oil. If the water didn't get higher than that, your concerns will mostly center on external issues (rust/corrosion) from submersion in water, but the motor and crankcase should be okay. MAYBE some water could get in through the gasket for the clutch push-rod, but even then you're talking almost nil water pressure on the seal, and an oil change will solve that problem easily.

Overall, it sounds like you got out a lot luckier than you initially made it sound.

    MARKETING IDEA!

GINORMOUS ZIP-LOCK BAG for motorcycles! When potential flood is coming, lay out bag, open bag, push bike onto "floor" of bag. Pull bag up around bike. Seal shut. Use household vacuum cleaner nozzle to suck out excess air through bleed port on bag. Let it rain. When the water recedes, unzip bag and remove bike.

    Dumb or brilliant?

Brilliantly dumb. HAHA. JK But I guess you would have to construct one hell of a sturdy expensive bag, and be able to sell to nearly every bike owner who lives in a flood plain to see a profit.

Better idea... if you live in a flood plain, and you know a large storm is coming, and you have time to wrap a giant zip lock around your bike, then just take the time to move it higher ground.

  11. So...............

Did the FPR fix the fueling problem?

Are you going for a Labor Day ride?

Ok, I placed my order through SHSflowersports. I used a fake name because I don't know all of the rules of the forum yet. Anyway, 50 dollars with shipping for a 2001 FPR. Placed the order the 28th, and I check the order status everyday. They still haven't even shipped the damn thing. I understand the weekends and holiday and shit, but at least get it out by Friday. I ordered some shit from shmike schmandit the next day and everything was on my porch this morning.

  12. Craftsman = Lifetime warranty. Never buy another screwdriver for the rest of your life.

Yep, Life time warranty pretty much sums up the characteristics of a quality screwdriver.

  13. I posted to be carefull about bending the rail. Like any line connection, you want to hold both ends with wrenches.

I don't remember the exact sizes now, 24 and 27mm I think. That said, I used a close to size standard wrench and a crescent wrench the last time with good results.

The FPR is sealed with the O rings on the pipe between the regulator and the rail, not really the fitting that mounts it. Mine was not hard to loosen.

It is really much easier than you will think. Just get two wrenches and do it.

so in other words... quit being a pussy and get it done. gotcha

  14. OK, so tank is propped up, I pulled all the necessary hoses and what not, plugged fuel line, etc. All that is left is the FPR sticking out of the rail. Do I have to loosen that big nut??? It is tough, and I remember reading about someone either bending their rail doing this or was concerned about bending the rail.

  15. The fuel pressure regulator diaphram fails, allowing fuel to bypass it into the vaccuum line, which pours directly into the throttle bodies. A stuck fuel injector is highly unlikely. Replace the regulator first then diag further.

Thanks bud, did some more research and came to the same conclusion. FPR is on its way here.

  16. Wondering..... if the bike is leaking fuel into the cylinders while it is not running, does this mean I also have a leaky fuel injectors, on top of the shitty fuel pressure regulator??? Or could it leak fuel in with good injectors?
