  1. From my Honda service manual...

Turn the ignition switch OFF, place the motorcycle on it's side stand and shift the transmission into neutral.

Check the slack in the drive chain lower run midway between the sprockets

    CHAIN SLACK 25-35 mm (1 - 1-3/8)

    There you have it :icon_cool:

My first reaction was 'what the hell I was smoking...Then I went to check my owner manual:

page 135: 'Before servicing your drive chain, turn the engine off, lower the CENTER stand (page 55), and check that your transmission is in neutral'

page 136: 'Check slack in the lower drive chain. Drive chain slack should allow the following vertical movement by hand: 1 - 1 3/8 in'

page 139, chain adjustment: 'Place the motorcycle on its center stand with the transmisson in neutral and ignition switch off, adjust the chain etc., Rotate the rear wheel and recheck chain slack. Drive chain slack should allow the following vertical movement by hand: 1 - 1 3/8 in'

Are not all owner manual the same?

  2. Today I had new chain installed at local Honda dealer. He also replaced both sprockets with O.E.M. I bought sprockets some time ago but did not change them when I replaced my oem chain first time at 17000 miles. BTW front and rear sprockets do not show much wear at 33500 miles. When I picked up my bike I was in hurry since I had quite busy day at work and had to come back quickly. When leaving work I placed bike on center stand and noticed the chain is very loose. When lifting chain up it would move up until it rested against swing arm. It would move a little more if swing arm was not in its way. I figure it had more then 2 inches of slack. Since manual mentions 1 to 1 3/8 in of slack I took the bike back to dealer. The mechanic left for the test drive and young guy who works there responded to my concern the chain slack should be check with bike on side stand, and it's even better when rider sits on the bike. The salesperson came out next and said the chain 'stretched' during my 5 minutes gentle ride. I answered that I had many chains replaced in my life and none of them stretched that much in first five minutes of riding! After few minutes mechanic came back from ride and confirmed he checks chain slack with the bike on side stand. When I mentioned the manual mentions the chain slack should be adjusted with the bike on the center stand his answer was 'you can not always trust manual'. Honestly in my opinion 1 in of slack with the bike on center stand seems to be a little tight but what is correct way to check chain tension? I always trust manual so I was a little skeptical about mechanic opinion. The total labor cost of replacing two sprockets and chain was $90.00. Also my wheel alignment indicators are both on the 4th notch which means the axel is just outside the green (good chain) area. I'm saving money for chain tool.

  3. I've got 2 pins just starting to show the red dust. :icon_evil:

I'll be needing a chain and front sprocket this year some time.

Hope the new DID 530 ZVM2 chain is better and lasts longer then the old one, it's $50 more.

I'd say don't ride anywhere far if you're showing that red dust on your chain. It goes from that to stretched out in no time flat.

I keep it under 120 since I noticed red dust on mine...My new chain coming in today :icon_biggrin:

  4. after adjusting the chain and tightening the rear axel nut as per specs my chain mysteriously get very loose after about 2-300 miles. I already ordered new did chain, current chain is ek with about 17000 miles, but what is the chance of rear axel moving slightly in the swingarm?

  5. My fan kicks at 212-214F. 220F is to high in my opinion. Also with outside temperature about 90F my gauge shows about 186F when going 80-85MPH or faster. Slowing down to 70-75 will send my temperature higher, how high depends on outside teperature, humidity seems to affect the temperature reading also. My is 2002 silver :)

  6. cleaning the bike drives me nuts. I ride it daily, when not crushing, and keeping it clean it's a chore. When I look at some of the bikes here on the forum I cannot believe how clean some of them are. But then I don't think there are many with 20k+ annual mileage. I do not have clean bike syndrome but too much dirt gets to me on occasions.

  7. As for installation:

I only removed my screen and top side fairing panels on both sides. I attached the smaller black box, I believe this is igniter, with supplied tie wraps to a metal rod going across the front fairing under the base of the screen. I needed to twist it to face down for the screen to fit. I attached the bigger box, I believe this is ballast, with supplied two-way adhesive tape to the flat surface inside fairing cone under the headlamp. I routed the wires along metal brackets securing it with supplied tie wraps. I did not drill any holes. I believe the two way tape is strong enough to keep ballast attached to the flat front fairing surface. I also used black electric tape to secure teh connection of the stock wires to mcculloch harness. It took me about 1 hr to do it, but it can be done in half of that time by person with more experience.

  8. According to this it should arrive at my house tomorrow before noon!

  9. Who want's to go halves w/me? :D

I would like to go halve with you. I was thinking about installing high/low but since I will have to get new tires soon I will be happy with low beam conversion. Can you email me at tgo63 at yahoo com how we could do this?

  10. Not meaning to offend St. Pete, but I emailed "hidseller" and this is it.
Yes, everything included.  It is a plug n play McCulloch Kit..  $185 shipped.  All low beam model available.

    For H4 hi/low, additional $110/ set.

Sounds like a damn good price!

so to make clear for everyone; $185 is for a kit which means 2 single bulbs/ballasts? This would come to $92.50 per person for H7 bulb low beam?

If this is a case sign me in :D Does this also means I can buy kit for $185 and put one H7 in low beam and another H7 in high beam? we talking about 5300 kit?

    Thanks
