XX Posted August 9, 2003 Posted August 9, 2003 somebody mentioned, not long ago, about the steering head bearings being an opportunity for improvement for the bird if you replace the oems with tapered bearings. could somebody let me know some part numbers and place to find and upper and lower replacement for my bike? i want/need to replace/adjust them soon and may opt for the improvement. tia Quote
Pete in PA Posted August 11, 2003 Posted August 11, 2003 Bueller, Ferris Bueller HERE! Dennis Kirk 2003 cat. page 412. Lists tapered roller bearings for the XX $50 According to the ST 1100 site, it is THE FIX for deccelerartion wobbles and it is almost imposible to notch them even doing wheelies. My XR 650 L has them, the XX, ST 1100, (not sure about the new Wing) don't. GO FIGURE :!: :!: I geuss 3 things wrong with the XX isn't bad. Quote
Steve Posted August 11, 2003 Posted August 11, 2003 Give CBR Bearing company, in San Diego, a shot. I have used them for wheel and head bvearings for my ST1100 and have nothing but great things to say about them both on price and service! http://www.cbrbearing.com/ Quote
XX Posted August 16, 2003 Author Posted August 16, 2003 hey pete, could you post or pm with the part # so I can order via internet this weekend? thanks! Quote
CBR-RR-XX-CESS Posted August 16, 2003 Posted August 16, 2003 This is interesting,on my cbr954 which had tapered bearings Honda has updated them back to standard roller bearings to help eliminate head shake. On the XX which is heavier this might not be a problem. Jeff Quote
Pete in PA Posted August 17, 2003 Posted August 17, 2003 Dave in Dennis Kirk it's p# 12-1439 Jeff, are you sure that is the reason they switched back to balls from tapered? Or was it cost. Quote
Mikey Posted August 17, 2003 Posted August 17, 2003 Tapered rotate easier than roller bearings, so it would make sense to go back to roller bearings if the front end is wobbling due to ease of rotation. Quote

They recommened the update for greater stability if you ride hard or do track days . Had mine updated at 6k and it did calm the front down,on the 954 anyways. I doubt if it would be an issue with the XX. Jeff Quote
