fwiw Mike, I stopped eating junk food a long time ago. That seemed to make the biggest differance you see,

I have always avoided sodium and don't drink anymore. Lost 63lbs.

Look at you with the show off numbers 😀

Thanks for rec but I do think I read that the wrist ones could have less accuracy but I don’t recall how or why.

I did the readings for two weeks and they stayed in that slightly higher that ideal zone, nothing crazy high. I call the doc who was away now until the end of April. Reception said they’d leave a not about my readings for the doc on her return.  I’m not too worried about it at this point but will continue to try to improve by making more healthier daily choices. To be continued ….

  2. I’ve been eating an apple every weekday for breakfast. Likely disqualified as a contender as per carb/glycemic call outs you mention.

I feel like that old guy Elaine worked for in Seinfeld but I slice my apple with one of those corer/slicers gizmos and the eat the slices with a fork. sometimes I peel a clementine and add it in or slice up a banana and add them in.

Before this fresh fruit kick it was steel cut oats and cinnamon every morning. I could eat that everyday for life and not get sick of it.

Not sure what you mean, it just is.  However, last night I found out that he had no clue how to properly measure BP.  He wasn't doing any of the right steps.  Sit down, feet flat, rest at least five minutes, test, and then test again a few minutes later.  He'd walk up to one of his bar stools with legs dangling (crushes leg arteries) or do it right after being outside/walking around.  WTF.  So we have no idea what's right.  At the doctor he was "only" 150/75.  He had been doing well on weight and diet until his obese, junk food making sister moved in and went back to eating junk.  So he's going to work on that again.  Also I've talked about him before, his knees are always in pain when he's eating junk, and limit his abilities, but he's fine if he eats well.

Sorry, I did not communicate well .. I just was wondering how this person got the number of concern; it sounds like it came about via a less than ideal process with the home monitor.

Interesting variations.  You had a crazy low one, do you think it was measurement error?  I've been reading more about BP lately as my systolic has dropped a lot, probably from both better diet and lost weight.  But diastolic went up a little.  It looks like this is actually good.  On Wednesday I found out a good friend is at 160/75 which is probably really terrible.  The low diastolic with high systolic seems to correlate with more events.

Hi, yep I think the low one was an error. That was with the LifeSource monitor I started with but learned after that the cuff size is too large for my arm diameter. I reached out to the Canadian Distributor on what model I need for the proper sized cuff (manual cites model X, retailers online offer model Xa) but have not heard back from them so I mooched another monitor, the PhysioLogic which seems to have a better fitting cuff for my arm diameter.

I have been reading a bit of Dr Google and taking BP readings seems o have a lot of variables at play down to the temp of the room at the time of the reading, what chair you are sitting in and how long it's been since you took a piss or shit. I know my BP is up but I am less confident of the accuracy of my readings.

Your friend with the 160/75 ... how did that number come to be? What were the conditions involved in getting that number?

  5. You guys want to see my numbers so far?

In the near two weeks since my appointment I have not been able to walk as much as I meant to or drink as much water as I intended to. I have cut back on the Mary Jane a fair bit but I have consumed a bit more alcohol than I normally do. My week day food intake has been healthier but my weekend consumption is less improved.

I did switch monitors early on, the one I started with was too big for my arm and I'm pretty sure it was giving me slightly better numbers than reality. The newer monitor I've switched too does fit me properly but I'm finding that testing is finicky at best ... have to wait after caffeine, have to wait after walking. have to have the cuff on the right place and at the right tension ... off a smidge on this stuff and the numbers reflect it.

My numbers are high but I don't know if it's "medication needed" high or not. I would say I have no feelings/symptoms I can notice, I realize they call it the silent killer. It's just a number on the monitor to me. I cross my fingers and press start.

    Lay off the weed

so it ain’t so, Dr. Slappy! It’s one of the only things I have to look forward to these days.

No more anything marijuana, alcohol or sodium. Eat fiber and lean protein. No soda and reduce your intake of sugar too.

Go for a long walk daily….

Go to bed early and get a good solid rest.

    This will all help.

Mary Jane will be an adjustment, but I really don’t think I consume that much alcohol or sodium. I think my fibres been good for a while I do eat decent protein and I drink next to no soda and very little sweets. I do have to up my walking game and my sleep has been the shits lately.

    Thanks for the info.

I actually dusted a home blood pressure monitor last night after the doctors appointment and took three readings that were all very close to 120/80. I do think the cuff on it is a little large for my arm and I should go down a size. I drove around to two drugstores last night but none of them had the smaller size. It makes me wonder if the reading the doctor took in the office yesterday was one on a cuff that didn’t fit me properly either . We pick up a new monitor cuff shortly to see if it makes a difference.

  7. So I went for a check up today and the doc wants me to take and log blood pressure readings for the next two weeks and let her know.  If my numbers are too bad she said she’d likely put me on some meds.

HOW DO I DROP MY BP IN TWO WEEKS?!!

  8. Hi

I need my .org fix all the time. On closer look it appears to be normal when I click to the .org on my MBA every time. I have to re-log in when I click the .org on my iPad (the one I bought from you) and my iPhone (14+).

It would seem it is just me and my cookies. I’ve never been much of a baker. Maybe it’s Apple trying to save me from myself. I’ll see if I pour some milk and try to poke around my cookies. Thanks for all you do SwAImpnut!

Still.  Only use my same ol' laptop with Firefox.  The cookies thing that triggered the "WTFingF" thing is gone, but probably because I keep getting logged out.  I'm telling you, it's the robot aliens, or Skynet has become self-aware!

  10. Hi,

So we broke our 6 quart slow cooker near Christmas and bought a similarly sized Instant Pot as a replacement. We have yet to fire it up.

What are some of your favourite things to cook in your Instant Pot? I'm wanting to give it a whirl and have a few ideas but hoping we can talk about healthy Instant Pot recipes in this thread.

  11. We had a storm about a month ago (hurricane Fiona) and in anticipation I stocked up on canned foods including a flat of Highbury Black Beans from Costco. I cracked the flat on Friday night and mixed a can in with some leftover taco meat and salsa ad ate with nachos and a spoon. So good. Yesterday I mixed a can in with a can of corn and some salsa and leftover basmatti rice. Delicious. Farts have been a tad more than normal but nothing outrageous. I just drained those cans, no rinse or anything else. I have been eating steel cut oats daily for over a month now so perhaps my farts are adjusted by the oats and thus the bean farts have had less impact.

  12. Resmed Airsense 10 over here. Nasal pillows and heated tube with humidifier. I love it. I’ve never tried a mask and I was definitely a mouth breather going into this but I’ve had no issue.

My nostrils seem perpetually clogged, be it from plant bloom season, dusty rooms, sunny days, cats, etc. In other words pretty much all the time. The only time they are not sort of clogged and are very clear is when I’m using CPAP, cold winter days too. When I have a cold and my nose is completely blocked I look forward to bedtime when I can have that warm moist CPAP air pumping up my schnoz. It might take a minute or two but it clears out my nose and sinuses like a dream.

In typical male denial, I did not think I had a problem with sleeping and snoring but I went to a local clinic to appease my wife. CPAP has been life-changing for me for sure. For her too, she immediately started getting better quality sleep. In a couple of years I’ve had it I’ve only missed a single night and that was because I was passed out drunk on a buddies couch.

One thing I might throw out there as well is that I think CPAP machines are hard to come by these days. They were two major suppliers, Resmed and Phillips, and Phillips had a large recall. In combination with supply chain issues we see these days I’ve heard that new machines are like hens teeth. The machine they got you to test in house may have been of questionable quality perhaps.
