SwampNut Posted March 10 Posted March 10 As is too often the case, the garbage products at $40 are...garbage. And something just better is $500. I really want a small mechanic stool that is better than this, but am not spending $400-600 for Vyper. Anything in between? What annoys me about mine is the small wheelbase, being tippy, and the small/hard wheels catching on expansion joints. I mostly use this on the driveway concrete, sometimes in the epoxy garage (also still has joints). I'm half inclined to just buy high end wheels and see how that goes, but could be wasted money. I want low and flat so I can sit/get up from any direction, working on motorcycles, bicycles, cars. I feel like maybe someone here has this one? But it doesn't look all that wide/stable, wheels look small-ish. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0D5S7WTZB This is wide with good wheels (50% larger wheelbase than mine): https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0D5HG9X9Q Quote
SwampNut Posted March 10 Author Posted March 10 Someone just told me to look for "medical stool" or similar. This is the first hit, and looks good. Wide wheelbase, great-looking wheels, and low enough (many of the shop stools are too tall). https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0C486GVFJ Comparison with my stool: Wheelbase <15, seat 12, height range 15-20. DaveK Posted March 10 Posted March 10 I have the Dewalt one and it's shit. LOOKS amazing, but it's shit. I also had the Dewalt high stationary stool and replaced it with the one you got. Love that chair by the way. I ALMOST bought a Vyper but like you, Jewed out. Just can't do it. Honestly, my 25 year old craftsman is awesome. Works flawlessly EXCEPT on uneven surfaces like the problem you have with yours. I also LOVE LOVE LOVE the 4 inch thick blue stiff foam square 3 feet by 3 feet that my buddy Joe gave me 10 years ago. I NEVER work on the floor without it. It's amazing. High density blue foam something or other..... When you find the perfect roller stool, let us know. I want one too. 1 Quote

I'm gonna try that medical one above. 18 minutes ago, DaveK said: Love that chair by the way. I still completely love it and I can now spend hours at that bench without discomfort or annoyance. Game change, and cheap. Quote

superhawk996 Posted March 11 Posted March 11 Having to think about and prepare for rolling over expansion joints so you don't land on your ass keeps your brain and hands working. I think putting bigger better casters on it would probably be enough to make it much better. The roller blade type wheels will probably work great as long as they don't go sideways while traversing a joint, then they might be worse than the wheels on your stool. 2 Quote

There's still an issue with basic, small hard wheels not wanting to roll on unfinished concrete, in general, and basic shop chairs being tippy. And my tool stand also hates it. So... New wheels for the tool stand and new chair for me. 1 Quote
CALCXX Posted March 11 Posted March 11 Good thread, you got me thinking about my cheap HF stool. Even a 10mm washer stops it right NOW. 3in wheels should really help. Quote

CALCXX Posted March 11 Posted March 11 (edited) You do it enough, you will start flicking your ears. Do you want me to post that high res vid again? Better not. Wrecks .org. I know what happened and you know also. Edited March 11 by CALCXX 1 Quote
superhawk996 Posted March 11 Posted March 11 I have an old cheapo work stool and I don't remember having issues with stuff on the ground other than extension cords or the air hose. Quote
SwampNut Posted March 12 Author Posted March 12 Upgrading the table is promising for the chair upgrade. Just having larger and better-rolling wheels was a big improvement. Although, it can actually wander now, so it's a compromise. Bumping it moves it a lot. Also I often shoot it across the driveway knowing it will stop pretty quickly. Now...no. Also, recommended work accessory, I use it a LOT. 1 Quote

I had to look at a picture of your driveway. Your joints are much smaller, and much farther apart. Weird. I also wonder if the surface is different. Quote

IIRC yours has a consistent broom finish, mine was broomed but has become smoother, some parts have become totally smooth/slick. The smoother finish probably makes things slip out from under the wheels more easily, something I hadn't considered. Quote
CALCXX Posted March 16 Posted March 16 (edited) Cigar holder w/ash tray? Really ?🙄 Edited March 16 by CALCXX Quote
SwampNut Posted March 16 Author Posted March 16 27 minutes ago, CALCXX said: Cigar holder w/ash tray? Really ?🙄 And beer holder. I'm not an amateur. So after a few days and a few uses... The better wheels and larger wheelbase did as expected. Easy rolling and no tippiness. Downside is that these wheels move so easily; one light bump and the table/chair are on the move. Also my driveway has a slight angle down and they want to slightly follow that. I'm probably going to make up something to very lightly rub on a wheel/bearing and add just some tiny bit of friction. The seat top is SOOOO damn comfortable, compared to any others. Bottom line, recommended if the size and fit is in line with your needs. 1 Quote
CALCXX Posted March 16 Posted March 16 (edited) Nice improvements. Over the top as only Carlos can do. Mods, we need that poke-poke button. We got a bullshit and crackpipe button. Just sayin. 😆 Edited March 16 by CALCXX 1 Quote
rockmeupto125 Posted March 22 Posted March 22 So no one has found a good $40 substitute for the vyper? 2 Quote
CALCXX Posted March 22 Posted March 22 (edited) I have Dr. appointments this coming week. I'll see what follows me home. Joe, how often do they replace those chairs at your hospital ? Group buy ?😁😁😁 Edited March 22 by CALCXX Quote
