Vendors trying really hard to lure *users* into loading APPS - applications

In most cases apps provide a vastly improved experience, and do not remove any privacy.  Last I looked I have 147 apps loaded on my two mobile devices, probably 80-ish on the PC.  There are certainly cases where the apps are retarded, but not most of the time, for what I use and look at.

Went to a restaurant in town for the first time......no menus, have to download an app for the menu, then pay on phone before order is to be made.  F that nonsense.

Found an actual person, asked politely for an actual menu....got one, then asked to pay with this, me waving a CC in the air.   "Ok, yes we can do that for you".

I vote with my wallet...food was ok, but service was stoopid, stoopid, stoopid. I won't return.

I get asked for permissions to my contacts, photos, etc that make no sense.

So say no.

I get asked for that access that makes a lot of sense.  If I load an app that will use that data for what I need, then.......??  If you use a web site for the same purposes, it will ask for the same things.

Are you sure it was an app, not just a QR to a site?  I see the latter a lot, and love it.  I'm not loading an app for a one time use restaurant.

Wait, this is a boomer bitching thread, isn't it.  Today I learned that ChatGPT has a phone line so people with flip phones can call to get answers.  Want the number?

I didn't say no, I said no thank you, because I am nice and I am polite, that is until someone or something gives me reason not to be.

Anyway, I almost forgot one more stoopid thing............to pay I was to manually type in my CC # and other info, similar to when you buy online from a legit site on you home PC,  into their store APP via my phone.  No thankyou.

I also always carry cash with me, that way even in the rare event of an EMP pulse or downed service, I can still get stuff done, like get a haircut.

My response was to Bill saying that apps ask those things.  Just say no to the apps.  Done.

It's 2024, nobody needs to type anything manually at all any more.  Just store it on the device/cloud and it's auto-entered.

Just say no thank you to the apps, is what I am saying.

Yes my home PC has all the relevant numbers stored and I don't have to manually type them in every time.  However, none of that is on my phone. I don't use my phone for banking or payments ever. Just calls, texts, emails, navigation and camera.  That's pretty much it except for alarm clock and calculator. Wait, I did download an app for my dad's hearing aid to control the volume etc.

So the real reason isn't to get your info.  It's to market to you.  To push sales and whatever.  I turn all that shit off.  And obviously when it says "allow this app to track you" well, fuck you, fuck no.  That would let an app see what you're shopping for and give you an ad.  Using a web site is no less intrusive than using an app for the same function; the data needed is the same.  But web sites can't push notifications on mobiles.

I pretty much guessed when I dissed the APP you would come charging in.  🍺

Anyway, I live by the KISS principal.  When the juice is worth the squeeze, I'll do it. Simples.

The exact point of apps instead of stupid shit like entering info manual.

In the true story example I gave, even with autofill of info, using CC far easier = KISS

You're going through a lot of work and complexity to keep things simple.  Using a hammer and a chisel to carve a car is simple, but a lot of work.

You have to look through 147 + 80 apps on two different phones to find the one you want.  How is that less work?

I have my CC info memorized, so I can enter pretty quick.

What???  I don't have two phones, and I don't have to look through anything.  Either open a specific one, or like today when a site wanted to securely log me in, it auto-launched their app so I could validate there.  Way better than some other identity validation.  WTF is "look through" apps?

I scrolled up and looked again.  You said you had 147 apps on two phones, and 80+ on your PC.

I don't have many apps on my phone, but still takes 3 screens to see them all.  Unless, it's an app on my main screen, I have to hunt for it.  Maybe I-phones are different?

Two devices; tablet and phone, and one of the PCs has mobile apps (the others can't).  This is so that I can use the same device I am on for any function without going to another device at all.  iPhones may be different, and also you choose how to organize things.  I have two pages, not full, and also mostly just type, like if I want Home Depot, I type 'hom' and it runs.  I don't picture what you might be picturing.  It's fast, way faster than browsers.  And more secure.

My android just looks like a PC desktop with icons for each app.  I only have 24 apps per page.  Much more limited than what you're using, but that's okay.  The user is also fairly limited.
