99% certain that is Tom's bike. The surrounding garage is the giveaway.

Carbies in nice shape seen to be drawing a niche interest

Mental illness.

I had never considered this before, but fixing my fucked up injectors on the neglected bike took less time, effort, parts, and dollars than fixing carbs.  The $4 parts were at the Honda dealer...the car dealer down the road.

Also, do not take my anti-carb ranting too seriously, but I seriously do hate the fucking things, and will always rant about them.  They are like lead acid batteries, and I have no room in my life for either.

Earlier today trying to talk myself out of buying an older bike because I find them more and more a pain in the ass. But... You don't need an unobtainable ecu, and there's no GPS tracker/spy.

I was having a related conversation with myself as I considered buying an older bike. "But they are unreliable. So, how did you ride then thousands of miles with little or no maintenance?"

Last night I discovered a puddle of oil under the XR.  Fucking fuck.

Forgot the drain plug huh ?

I did that in the 70's all liquored up.

Good thing I went back inside to get another beer and saw it.

Didn't start the bike. Hardware store across the street had more oil.

It's good to "flush" the oil pan once in awhile.

Nope.  Probably the seal behind the sprocket.  I said I've had enough shit and didn't take it out to inspect.

I flushed my 7.3 Power Stroke with a couple gallons of Rotella T6, I was sober, and so mad at myself.

They hold a lot of residual oil and I wanted as much of the old out as possible since I was switching the type and viscosity.  I pulled the plug and filter while it was hot and let it drain overnight.  I also vacuumed out and flushed the reservoir for the injection system.  In the morning I splashed in a bit of new oil to flush the pan and walked away to do other stuff.  My plan was to do another small splash, when I came back my mind had switched to 'fill er up' without telling my hand to install the plug.  The first gallon probably overfilled the drain pan a little.  When I reached down to get the third bottle it was in the rapidly growing black puddle....fuck.

Depends if you fix all the scratches and scuffs.  The fucked up kick stand, and patch the holes in the seat :)

FWIW, $10K may not be a bridge too far these days; and if not at present, I suspect likely in the not too distant future. Everyone knows the supply of clean-to-pristine XXs with clear provenance & titles and low mileage is limited and dwindling. Such an XX with less than 10K will merit some collector attention--one with under 5K will almost assuredly snag collector interest. The best strategy is to keep it as OEM/factory original as possible (or at least be capable of returning it to that state), and keep good maintenance records in support of the bike's provenance.

It was neglected for over ten years, which is why I stole it for $1500.  I should re-post the story and cleanup effort, which was lost to our data loss recently.  But yes, staying stock is a big deal for me.  That seat thing was done to a spare seat.

I just sold my 03, it was my third 2003, with 11K on it.

Asked 7500 sold for 7

Only mods were Micron 4-1, vfr bars, pcIII and a K&N.

Had all stock parts cept the stock ecm. A few spare parts.

After 65 yoa I found it sitting longer between rides and now at age 70, I hadn't even ridden her this year.

It is going to a proper owner in OK.

I believe he has joined the board.
