...Melanie Cree at the University of Colorado Anschutz, is also running a GLP-1 trial in teens and young women with the condition, testing whether the drugs help by stabilizing weight and blood sugar.

 

As part of that trial, her colleague Allison Shapiro scanned the participants' brains before and after. Within a few months, the connections in the region that helps direct attention had multiplied. "We didn't expect to see this effect, and we really don't know what it means," Shapiro said.

That uncertainty has raised a larger question: Are the drugs acting directly on the brain, or are they reshaping the nervous system more indirectly by reducing inflammation, improving metabolism and easing stress on the body?
