Has anyone tried a Honda chain kit? I saw one on both Ron Ayers and HondaDirect sites. It's part number is 06406-MAT-A00 and it looks like it has both sprockets and a chain for about $260-$270.

I ordered and installed that kit on my birdie last year. Only problem was that it was 120 links where as our bikes need 110. I simply nailed the old and new chain up side by side in my garage and got the proper length. Still working well after 18,000 miles.

Thanks for the info guys. Does anyone know what brand of chain is in the kit? I'll bet it's either a DID or RK and either is OK with me. My OEM RK has 20K miles on it.

The kit #06406-MAT-A00 is the D.I.D. chain, and sprockets. #06405-MAT-P00 is just the D.I.D. chain, and #06405-MAT-P10 is just the RK chain. If it matters to you the stock front sprocket has a rubber damper on it that quiets the chain noise. The aftermarket sprockets do not have this damper and are a bit louder. This might not be a concern to you. I know because I have had both.

One note on the previous post, the part numbers are coming from the microfiche for the 99, so part numbers may vary.

I received my 06406-MAT-A00 chain kit today. It had two shiny new Honda sprockets, a master link and a DID 50 ZVS chain.

I've heard of the ZVM chain, but I've never heard of the ZVS. Does anyone have any details on this chain? I've looked on the DID site and Google and can't find any info on this product.

ZVS is Honda OEM part.
ZVM is DID afternarket part.

Be warned the blackbird does not deal kindly to inferrior chains.

Last time I replaced my chain the dealer fitted an RK 530XSO which is rated for a maximum of 1000cc. As the sales person siad this was a signifincat upgrade on stock I'm pissed to find it's actually not rated for the Blackbird at all.

At 10,000 miles [16,000k] it's fucked. I did a little research on the net. I find that in the UK the same RK chains carry a 20,000 mile warranty – that’s 32,000k -whjen fitted to the correct bike!

The correct RK chain is the RK 530GXW.

Overall the DID chain has better specs so that will be my next chain.

Yeah there is. Check out RonAyers.com. They have a parts microfiche online.

The 45 tooth rear sprocket is 41201-MAT-A00. There are two numbers for the OEM 17 tooth front sprocket. They are 23801-MAT-000 and 23801-MAT-760. I don't know what the difference is.

000 is for the 97-98 model.
760 is for 99-03.
