can the XX fuel guage be calibrated? my 97 reads 3/4 of a tank when i have reached the mid point mileage wise when it should be at half...any other years do this?

Digital gauge is no better...Mine reads full with about 5 miles left...then drops down to a blinking red bar.

The problem lies in the shape of the tank and where the float is. Looking at the tank from the side it is shaped like a "L" with the short part pointing down. The float operates in that deep area.
What happens is you must burn all the gas in the flat part of the tank before the float can even move.
I've had my float assy. out twice now, trying to improve the situation. I got a slight improvement by bending the arm down.

I usually fill mine up at the quarter tank mark and I can only put about 3.5 to 3.75 gallons in at that point. Which leaves 2.5 gallons of fuel left in the tank. If it was accurate it (the gauge) were accurate the tank should have more like 1.5 gallons left at a quarter tank.

I can't believe the Honda engineers used an apparent linear scale for the gas needle, even though the shape of the tank is non-linear. I don't see why they didn't fix this. It's as simple as filling the tank with, let's say 1/8 tank of fuel and adjust the gauge for 1/8 deflection. Fill her with another 1/8 tank of fuel and adjust the gauge for 1/4 deflection, etc.

Think of it as a "Fuel Level Indicator", and not a "Fuel Gauge".
Honda doesn't put measurements on the indicator for a reason, being that it doesn't actually measure what's left in the tank, but give you an idea of where the fuel level is.
It's probably the same float/gauge unit used on several different bikes, so calibrating for each unit would end up costing $.50 somewhere.............
