So after my thread on the R/R connector fix, my tach. is still goofy.
I checked the schematic and found that it gets it's pulse signal from the ECM. I took the nose off and disconnected the plug behind the tach. I checked to see if I had continuity between the plug and the ECM connector. I did. So I took the main ground apart that is by the tank bolts. Cleaned it up and greased it. Put the ECM plug back in and started it up. Tach. stood still for about two minutes until I twisted the throttle and it started to work. At 3 minutes, 25 seconds of checking voltages, it dies again.
Am I missing something, or do I actually have a bad tach.? Please don't say it is the ECM. Could the power commander be affecting it at all?

I'm always tempted to suspect the PC... But the logical test would be to temporarily install a known good tach and see if the symptoms persist. Then I'd remove the PC and repeat the test with each tach; if they're both good, I think you can safely assume the PC has issues... BTW, it's extremely rare for the ECM to go bad - considering the replacement cost, that's a good thing.

I have seen the PC pins release, and have bad connections, so the trick is to remove and check the pins and the ecm's too. clean and check they are right and tight..

Took the PC out of the loop. All pins and connectors look clean and shiny. None bent or loose. Put it all back together again. Same thing.
I am going to keep riding her with an intermittent tach. until something else comes up.
I always get the weird stuff. I guess that is why people call me special.
