Since a recent 36,000km service [9 days ago] my bike smells of petrol. I notice this especially when I stop after a run in an enclosed space. I't definately got a rough edge to the idle. Fuel use is up [30km less range than usual].

It's a 2000 model fuel injected model with long life irridium plugs, std filter and std pipes. The service shop checked the plugs and the air filter.

I'm going to check this myself as
[1] I have no confidence in the dealers service department [I did my rant in other posts - won't affect any of you as they are in Wellington NewZealand] and
[2] the wife is mumbling about the high cost of maintaining the bike.

What should I look for?
I'm wondering if they cleaned the plugs [ a no-no] or have left a tube off somewhere, or got some tubes crossed over, or could the cocked regulator have damaged the engine management system?

Well Joe I would not be freakin surprised. When I got home after the regulator replacement I found the earth lead for my alarm had been left off the battery.

Make sure the coil packs are tight and properly grounded as well. Is it running rought a idle? I noticed mine runs rich upon first start up but then goes to the lean side after warm is completed (choke setting). Is one of the pipes blacker at the tip then the other. (possible indication of which bank is running rich) If you can't tell after all that start pulling the plugs and compare them noing which plug came from what cyclinder. If one is soaked in fuel or blackened hen there is your problem.
possible causes are; spark plug wire unseated, bad plug, coil pack misfiring, Throttle body stuck, injector stuck, ECM going south, low compression in cylinder, or ECM stuck in warm up loop. The latter I would assum/hope would throw a fault code on the FI light.

Well I've got the fairing off and been checking for any disconnected hoses [without removing the fuel tank] and I found the petrol tank breather hose was disconnected [and plenty of missing fairing clips - and Honda are the only ones who have ever serviced it]. I took photos to take to my little chat with them tomorrow.

I've reconnected it and run the engine and the petrol smell seems to have dissappeared.

At least I've confirmed the Honda dealers service staff are not fit to be let loose on it!
