Hey all,
I'm new to the BB and have noticed a really firm 'clunk' when I shift into first at a stand-still. The bike seems to jump forward as the gear falls into place. Is there an adjustment for this? Do I need an oil change?

nah it's a honda thing. well it's a motorcycle thing really, non-synchronized trans and wet clutches and all. of course you might need an oil change if it's been over 3k or the bike is new to you.

my 2002 does this.
my 97 did this.
my 98 vfr800 did this.
and my 94 vfr750 did this.

heck, all the motorsickles i've ever ridden did this, i just thought it was a motorsickle thing.

matey_peeps, thanks for the welcome. Didn't I just see you over in STN? Anyway, my ZX6 did this but I've had others that didn't. I think I recall an oil change made a real difference. I'll try that.

If you hold the clutch in for a couple of seconds before going into first it just snicks in, no good if you're in a hurry but it works for every other time.

Give the throttle a little "blip" before putting it into gear. Works for me.

Second that. Also change the oil. My tranny ran a little smoother after my oil change. Another thing you could do is check/change the clutch. This has helped me in the past with other bikes. They all kinda do that though.

The tranny gears are still spinning as you shift into gear. I believe that later year Blackbirds had some kind of dampner added to slow the free spinning gears down a little. Try using a synthetic oil, it makes everything smoother.

This is pretty typical, especially your first start of the day. The wet clutch pack is still slightly engaged. Like others have said, an oil change seems to help, but expect it to come back.
