Would be a real pain in the ass if you didn't remove the plastic first to say the least... I don't know if you could get the forks off without doing it. Probably could if you had a lift...

Personally I'd just remove them but I haven't changed mine yet.

The forks will come off without removing any plastic except the fender.

I can't see why you couldn't change the steering head bearings with out removing plastic. I've never changed mine, so I really can't confirm it.

I didn't remove any plastics other than the front fender. I do have a lift and it makes the job much easier.
