Full Version: Rear Disc Wear
Public Discussion Forums > Mechanical/FAQ > The Garage

Just replaced all the discs with genuine Honda items.
All pads replaced with EBC HH.
All work just fine.
Noticed that the rear disc is wearing slightly unevenly in so much that the inside edge of the disc in the area immediately around the fixings is not wearing.
It would suggest that these areas are slightly concave.
Anyone else noticed this?

I wouldn't be surprised to see this in the first few miles of use on new rotors.

If it keeps up for a few hundred miles, then tell the dealer it's defective, and get another one.

Why did you replace all your discs?? $$$$$

Just after 50,000 miles they were all below their wear levels

 What pads have you been running??
SwampNut
You scared me, so I had to go measure my rotors.

I replaced the OEM pads at about 3k with EBC HH.
They were worn out at 33k or so, and I replaced them with Galfer Black pads.
I am now close to 53k.

Rotor thickness at 33k was .188, which is .012 down from the stock .020.

Rotor thickness now is .183, which is only another .005" of wear.

That's significantly less wear than the EBC pads put on the rotors. The Blacks will not last as long of course; they are nearly worn. But I'd rather replace pads than rotors. Meanwhile I have nothing but great things to say about the feel and power of the Galfer Black pads. While I liked the EBC's a lot, they were less linear across the heat/friction curve, thus less predictable.

Just been playing with the dial guage.
The brand new rear disc has warped folks!
All this despite paranoid torquing of the bolts in the first place.
Still on the upside Honda are sending out a replacement.
Northman
How much variation are you getting on that new rotor?

Did you make sure your mounting points were all clean?
Bob Pinder
Variation is 0.6mm
And everything is always fanatically cleaned when it is taken apart and reassembled.
Looks like I got a duff one!

I'd still like to know how you wore them out. What was their measurement? How many sets of pads, and what kind of pads, have you gone through?
Bob Pinder
They wore out due to mileage and use.
They all measured under their respective service limits (less tham 4mm)
Up until now I have always used Honda genuine pads.
They last about 8,000 miles if I do a lot of in town riding and 16,000 miles if I sit on the motorways a lot.
Pads used now are EBC HH which are a little sharper.
The only tiny slight down side is they take fractionally longer (milliseconds!) to bite/warm up first thing in the morning.
I reckon 50,000 miles of all year round all weather riding to be good wear on the discs.
Only problem is I do this kind of mileage every year!

I have NEVER in my life heard of a disc wearing out in 50k miles. I asked on a couple other boards and nobody else has heard of it either. Especially with Honda pads which are pretty gentle on rotors. I ride in town and commute a lot, and you can see what my wear numbers are above, even with the much-harsher EBC pads for most of the bike's life.

Did you measure the rotors yourself, or did a dealer tell you they were worn out?

Something is not right.
Bob Pinder
Hi
Did all the measuring myself.
Been asking around the UK and it seems the average life expectancy over here is low 40k miles...................
So on that basis it looks like I did pretty well?
BIG BOY
When i just got my bike inspected, my back brakes were worn more than the fronts??
Why is that?
blackhawkxx
I had to replace my rear pads at 6,000 but at 11,000, my fronts are still good. I don't know why.

The weather corroding the discs I suppose? Very odd. Never heard of that.

The rears wear faster than the fronts. We've talked about theories why, but I don't know that there's a definitive answer.
Northman
Except in my case, that is.

My fronts lasted 11K, with the rears still going at almost 20. From the looks of them, they should be good for another 5-10, although I may replace them with the EBC's just for the "fun" of it sooner.
