Twice this year, in the roughly 14K miles that I've put on so far this year, after shifting up from first to second and applying a moderate amount of go juice, I have had the transmission slip out of second and into neutral. Only twice. Immediately after, I'd shift up and run hard up the gear to see if it would slip out again and it didn't. Since it has only happened twice, I thought maybe I shifted lazy and didn't quite get the gear to catch. It's definitely not a normal occurance. Something I should be wary of? SHould I order a clutch pack for standby? Or was it just a lazy shift?

A friend of mine had a ZX6R that did that but her bike was a stunt bike so I assumed that it was from the abuse second gear gets in the life of a stunt bike. I don't know for sure though, just speculation.

I could understand that if I stunted, but I don't. I've ridden fast before, and shifted fast, but always properly shifted gears and never had any issues. I don't do wheelies, so I'm not revving the hell out of it and dumping it while in second either. I ride pretty moderatelymost of the time and maintain her well.

Doing so, consistantly, is a a sign of bent shifter fork and/or fucked up gear dogs... but what you're describing is probably just lazy shifting...

I've actually noticed this as well. although it has happened much more than 2 times. However I've always attributed it to lazy shifting. Sometimes when I mean to shift up to second, I don't push it hard enough to get into second at all. On the other hand, a few times it has shifted "fully" into second and accelerates for about half a second and suddenly pops back into neutral. Although, It hasn't happened recently.

Mine did that a few times. Pretty sure it wasn't fully engaged in second though.

That is what happened to mine the 2 times it did it. I was actively in gear and the bike was pulling, then it popped back into neutral and as soon as I heard it rev I knew what happened, clutched in, and shifted back into second. Sounds like lazy shifting then. I'll have to make a better effort to positively engage second when I shift.

My ZX6 E did this a lot, it was a bent shifter fork I was told, but the cost to fix it was more than I wanted to spend. I have not had this problem except when I had redlined it in 2nd.

Uh Oh.
Mine started out with the occasional slip back into neutral but got to the point of never staying in second at all. The amount of time it would stay would progressively get shorter until it would barely make it into second before it would pop right back into neutral.
It didn't bother me too much as most of my joy riding is in the higher gears (no tight twisties, just sweepers), but it can get frustrating in town and stoplight to stoplight.
It sure can make dragracing a challenge.
It got to the point that I would shift through second directly to third, but if I clicked it at the exact same moment that it wanted to return to neutral, the shift lever would spin waaaay up and jam there. I would actually have to take my foot off the peg and stomp the lever back down. Not good.
I was hoping to make it through this season before tearing into it but the crash in May got me a little sidetracked. It's definately on the "to do" list for this winter. I haven't looked into all that's involved, but I'd imagine that splitting the cases is one of the steps. Oh joy.

Mine has been doing this also. more than occasionaly, less than frequently. As long as I can remember.
My 85 V65 Sabre did this also. Maybe a Honda trait.
I've always hopped that it was just lazy shifting on my part.
It helps to be forceful and hold the shifter up for a few seconds.
Yes the engine has to be removed and split.  While in there might as well do a few "other" things.

Hmmmm, all of my Honda's have done this....... the XX doesn't do it as much. I wouldn't worry about it.

I own my bike for 6 years, 60.000 miles.
The only time I dropped my bike was when I accellerated out off a standstill into first gear, and jumped into neutral when I hit a pothole 2 meters away from where I started.
Damage: over $ 3500,-- and a dent in my ego......
Only ever happened once, though.....
