I'm 99% sure that the rim itself is the same but the drive rubbers are made of a different material.

So am I (100% sure)
The drive rubbers were a different material on the older models. They will fit physically. The part was upgraded, and the part numbers superceded. You can't purchase the old part number any more.

OK thanks guys. I have another question. Will the cush drive from my '04 wheel fit the '97 wheel?
The reason I ask is because I want the spare rear to fit a touring tyre (Pilot Road) to. Basically I'm wanting to keep a Pilot Power fitted to the '04 wheel for my weekend scratching and then swap to the '97 wheel with the Pilot Road fitted for long trips.
If I can easily swap the cush drive then I don't need to worry about different wear rates of the rear sprocket as I'll always be using the same one.
