I think my R/R might be going south. Only evidence I have is on the way back from TN my voltmeter was reading as low as 12.8v@ ~4500rpm and dropping to below 11v@ idle. No abnormally high readings, so maybe the stator?

It normally reads ~14.5v at anything over 4000rpm and around 12.8 at idle. It returned to normal readings about 20 miles from my house. No problems starting or running the bike. Maybe the voltmeter (escort 8500) is the problem.

Grab another voltmeter and check it out. AND....pull the connection at the regulator apart and clean it. Also...as you said...the detector can only report on the information it has...so if the voltage was low because of poor contact to the detector, that may be it...hence checking with a VOM.

Got the word on mine yesterday Tim. Stator. Don't have a vm hooked up to mine but I think if the reg is gonna go it's just gonna quit. Mine was acting flaky for a while before it died.

That was my first thought, but it had returned to normal readings before I arrived home. Gonna go over the connectors, including the one the the detector/voltmeter and then see if it happens again.

If it were the R/R, I would expect spikes as well as drops in voltage, no?

Dion, at least it's a relatively simple fix. Fuck the shop, order the stator and a new gasket and slap it in there. Plug and play, baby....... 8)

Thanks Warchild.

Whats the red goop you put around the cable where it enters the cover?

Just don't buy the Electrex, right Dale ?

Cheers,

You know I'm a lazy ass. The bikes already at the shop and I don't have a trailer or vehical to load it into.

Correct!

My cover leaked oil, and I removed it and put on a new gasket. Still leaks. :?

Any chance I'm leaking oil from around one of the bolts?

Bend over, the stealer is going to rape you!!! If you want, I have a small trailer we can go get it and do it.
