i have a 2002 bird that i am putting nitrous on and elton fish said that i have a stand alone timing retard system because of the changes of the computer in 02 ,does anyone have any thoughts on this?

Jason, is that you??? It's me, Donnie.

The bird has a knock sensor that retards the timing when it "sees" a knock or detonation. All fuel injected birds have this. If you run higher octane fuel when running the nitrous the detonation will not be as bad. That's higher octane, not oxygenated race gas.

So, where's this bike at??

I'd definitely go with a timing retard system, and not rely on the knock sensor.

My high compression big bore knocks on occasion. Enough of a concern that I'm going to retard the timing via PC for pump gas.

The knock sensor retards the timing AFTER it sees detonation. It won't prevent it. If you had a earlier model, you could retard your timing with a power commander. The later models that take the power commander 3 instead of the 2 won't retard your timing. You have to get the power commander 3R wich they don't offer for the bird. Aftermarket ignition would be the way to go. A schnitz ignition box has an imput for nitrous I believe. With that box, you have normal timing till you hit the nitrous button and then it retards the timing as much as you have set it do so.

I have a dyna 2000 ignition that allows you to advance and retard as needed. Ideal for running NOS

I know this bike well. I believe he is going to start with a wet shot of at least 60 and up to whatever it'll take as he gets the chassis tuned in. He's a serious drag racer and a good friend of mine. The bike's already been lowered, or shall we say slammed, and stretched, and already has the air shifter installed with onboard compressor. He's in the process as we speak of putting on an extended tail section from Air-Tech. He's runnning my old Akrapovic exhaust and has had the PC3 professionally dyno tuned for race gas. He's geared it for the 1/8th with a 16 front and a 50 rear and has a Shinko 190 on the rear. The bike runs real good for what he has in it right now. He wants to take it to the next level.

Talked to him saturday. I think he's going to piggyback a PC2 just for the timing adjustability. PC3 to run the fuel to the injectors and the PC2 to run the coils, if he can. The only problem he sees with this is that the progressive nitrous controller he's going to use is time based where the PC2 can adjust timing on an RPM basis. He has talked to Elton Fish and Elton thinks it might be able to be done. It would take a while to figure out the RPM/time issues to try to make the two of them work together. Elton told him the best way to contol the timing would be to get a stand alone ignition system and integrate it into a Schnitz nitrous controller box which would run him in the neighborhood of $2300. He told me that before he spent 2 grand on an ignition, he would send the bike up to Elton and get a street turbo put on for just over 4K. That might be his best bet. Elton told him that he'd set the bike up and everything for under 5K and get like 260 horsepower out of her without going into the motor. Later he could upgrade his rods and pistons and run more boost.

Does your friend talk, Demon, or is he your "Silent Bob"? :poke:

OK, here's the deal. Jason has the computer, jpowers as you know him. Brian is the bird owner who Jason has been asking questions for. Brian works out of town doing construction and stays with Jason when he comes home. I've told Brian about this board as well as a few other local bird owners but they are mostly drag racers and would rather do their own thing. Brian and Jason are good guys. Jason has a 900RR that he's rebuilding after a rod bearing spun on him and just bought a 929 with a cracked case. They both drag race rather than do the twisties.

I don't know why Jason hasn't said anything else since his brief visit, or why Brian won't get on here himself. Guess I'm the talkitive one, but I look more like Silent Bob.
